Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character says the first words in this episode?

Answer: Hurley

The long-expected second season opens with a completely new character going through a daily routine, which involves working out, preparing some food and taking a bath. However, some of his activities are bizarre, like injecting a strange medicine labeled "4 8 15 16 23 42" and typing some unknown code into a computer after hearing an annoying beeping. Things, however, seem to be completely normal for that person...until an explosion is heard. In a matter of seconds, the man puts on a suit, grabs some weaponry and uses a telescope to see what is going on. Thanks to a group of well-positioned mirrors, the man discovers what is happening: two people have opened the door of his underground sanctuary; those two people being Jack Shephard and John Locke, who astonishingly look at the deep vertical tunnel that the hatch is.

After this introduction, we can hear the cursed numbers being mentioned by someone while the screen is black. Later on, we discover that person is Hurley, who looks really affected by the opening of what he calls the "burning death hole".
2. Which main character mentions the Black Rock in this episode?

Answer: Locke

Still mad at Locke, Hurley asks him why he lit the fuse, specially since he was running toward him yelling not to do it. John answers that he was just too excited to get inside, since that was the reason they went to the Black Rock and got the dynamite. Jack hears this and says there was another reason: to save everybody's lives. John quickly repeats the phrase, just to make sure Jack doesn't have another reason not to trust him.
3. Which word/s are written in the hatch door?

Answer: Quarantine

While looking at the hatch's door, Kate discovers that it has the word QUARANTINE written in red. What is strange, however, is that the word is written in the inside part of the door. This clearly means that whatever is inside the structure, it is not meant to leave or receive any visits.
4. According to Locke, how many hours had passed since he was pulled into the hole by the "column of black smoke"?

Answer: 5 hours

After deciding that the best thing to do is going back to the caves, Kate and Locke start discussing about what happened before. Kate obviously believes that John is obsessed and a bit insane but the man quickly brings back the memories of what happened 5 hours ago, when a column of black smoke pulled him into a hole. This make Kate realize that Locke is not crazy at all, and maybe that Jack is the one who should be more open-minded.
5. What nickname did Hurley give Jack in this episode?

Answer: Mr. Ha Ha

Since Locke and Kate left the hatch before them, Hurley and Jack decide to walk together and, after making a joke which was not enjoyed by Jack, Hurley makes a sarcastic commentary in which he calls him Mr. Ha Ha. This joke did make Jack laugh, making Hurley feel a little more relieved and calm about the current situation.
6. While telling Jack the story about his past, Hurley mentions several tragedies that occurred after his lottery winning. Which of these is NOT mentioned?

Answer: Himself being arrested

While walking with Hurley, Jack mentions the numbers and ask him why he believes the numbers are bad. Hurley understands he can't escape this situation, so he tells him the story about his lottery winning and how it changed his life for worse. He also mentions three tragedies, but Jack is still doubtful about this and, despite he doesn't say it, he obviously believes Hurley is a bit out of his mind.

This makes Hurley realize that Jack is not a perfect doctor after all, since he lacks a very important quality: bedside manner.
7. Which of the survivors asks Jack about Dr. Artz whereabouts?

Answer: Charlie

When Jack, Locke, Kate and Hurley return to the caves, they discover that all the survivors are involved in an argument. Shannon claims to have seen Walt in the jungle and heard whisperings. Now, she is convinced that other people inhabit the island. Charlie, however, is more concerned about the strange absence of Dr. Artz.

But when he asks Jack about him, he answers with a short and shocking phrase: "He didn't make it". After this, Jack decides that the best thing to do is staying in the caves, but Locke takes his own decision and, after grabbing some of the fuselage parts, he goes back to the hatch. And, to make things worse, Kate decides to follow him, just to make sure nothing happens to him.
8. Which of these things is NOT thrown into the hatch?

Answer: A stick of bamboo

When Kate arrives to the hatch, she discovers that Locke is ready to go inside the structure using the fuselage, but he thinks that it's better that she goes first, as she is lighter. After having him promise to take her out if she says so, Locke starts pulling her into the dark tunnel. However, when she is about to get to the bottom, she spots something moving around. After this, the only thing she manages to do is screaming, as a floodlight surprisingly turns on and she is pulled by an unknown force into the dark tunnel. Later on, Jack arrives and he discovers no one is around, meaning Locke also went into the structure. Without hesitating, Jack wraps some clothes around his hands and pulls himself into the tunnel.

As for the answer, at the beginning we see Locke throwing a rock into the hatch. Then, when Kate was being lowered down into the structure, she accidentally drops her flashlight. Finally, when Jack arrives he throws his torch to make sure the hatch is not a bottomless pit.

NOTE: The floodlight seen in this episode coming out from the hatch solves the question regarding the light seen by Locke at the end of episode 19: 'Deus Ex Machina'.
9. How many characters do we see holding fire weapons (guns) in this episode?

Answer: 2

As Jack investigates the hatch, he runs into plenty of things, like a pair of shoes, a hand-painted mural featuring the sum of the cursed numbers (108) and a strange wall which apparently has a very strong magnetic force. This exploration, however, is interrupted as a huge flashlight suddenly turns on and a song starts playing loudly. Shocked, Jack moves onto another room where he finds an old computer, but as soon as he attempts to push a button, he hears someone telling him not to: it's John Locke.

The doctor quickly ask him about Kate's whereabouts, while holding his gun, but he soon discovers that there is somebody else holding a weapon: an unknown figure who suddenly shows up and threatens to kill Locke if Jack doesn's put his gun down.

The identity of this person remains hidden just for some more seconds, as he soon reveals himself to Jack, leaving him even more astonished.
10. How many times does Desmond says the word "brother"?

Answer: 4

The first time we see this man is in Jack's flashback. When the doctor was doing a Tour De Stade, he accidentally twisted his ankle and received aid from a guy named Desmond. According to his words, he was almost a doctor once, he is training for a race around the world and he believes in miracles. After a long talk, Desmond leaves after saying a very significant phrase: "See you in another life, yeah?". Back in the island, Jack discovers that there is someone living in the hatch and, despite how unlikely it may sound, that person is the same guy Jack met in the "real world": Desmond.

One thing about this man is that he uses a lot the word "brother". He says it three times in Jack's flashback and one last time in the hatch.
11. Jack's flashback- Which is the name of the man who died in the ER during Jack's shift?

Answer: Adam

In the first part of Jack's flashback, he is forced to choose between two patients: a woman named Sarah and an old man named Adam Rutherford, both victims of a car crash accident. After a few time, he decides to help the women and manages to save her but, unfortunately, the other patient dies.
12. Jack's flashback- Which is Mr. Rutherford's time of death?

Answer: 8: 15

Adam Rutherford died at 8:15 am (one more time, the cursed numbers are involved). One fact that should be noticed is that this man shares surnames with Shannon, which means that he may be her father.
13. Jack's flashback- Which is Mr. Rutherford and Sarah's age respectively (as said in this episode)?

Answer: 57 - Late 20s

According to the people who brought the two patients over, Sarah didn't have an ID, but they estimated her to be on her late 20s. Mr. Rutherford's age, however, was a certainty: 57 years old.
14. Jack's flashback- Which is Sarah's fiancé's name?

Answer: Kevin

Before Sarah's surgery, Jack meets her fiancé, Kevin, who happens to be a very selfish and self-centered man. After realizing that her future wife might need professional care for the rest of her life, he obviously loses interest in the wedding. Jack, however, begins to gain interest in this woman and, just before the beginning of her surgery, he tells her six words that remain as one of Jack's strangest phrase (as it goes against the science and logic he has always believed in): "I am going to fix you".
15. Which of these characters is NOT new to the series?

Answer: Sarah

The only character who has appeared before is Sarah (as Jack's fiancée in episode 20: 'Do no harm'). Kevin and Adam appear briefly in the episode, but their presence surely have some significance. However, one new character definitely stands out from the rest and it's Desmond, whose presence in both Jack's past and present is surely going to give us some answers and, obviously, create some more questions.

Jack's flashback ends with a very moving scene in which, after returning from his Tour De Stade, Jack goes to see Sarah and tells her that he couldn't fix her. Sarah, however, thinks this is some kind of joke, as she can move her toes. After making sure this is true, Jack starts to cry, possibly remembering Desmond's words regarding how sometimes believing is the only thing necessary for miracles to happen.
