Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, the bleeping of the radar is heard. How many times does it bleep?

Answer: 13

While the screen is still black, the sound of the raft's transceiver can be heard methodically bleeping. This is followed by a series of events which at first appear to be a typical morning routine of an unseen man, until an explosion is heard echoing through the walls... and suddenly a transformation occurs. Instantly a highly technological lab of some kind, affixed with mirrors, scopes and weapons, is revealed.
We see now that there is more to the hatch (and thus, the island) than the survivors who gaze through the tunnel from above anticipate.
2. What symbol appeared beside the blinking green cursor on Desmond's computer?

Answer: >:

The mysteries of the island and the numbers deepen with the hatch exploration. Now it seems the numbers not only appear engraved on the exterior of the steel door (on the inside of which is the forbidding word "Quarantine") but they also serve a purpose to "execute".

It seems whoever the stranger is, he had been existing in the hatch for quite awhile.(Also notice the "injection" Desmond gave himself, possibly what gave Ethan his super-strength as well, and the number on the exercise bicycle: 16 mph).
3. In Jack's first flashback, he is seen in the emergency room with two patients entering from a severe car accident. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at what time?

Answer: 8:15 a.m.

Notice the name of the driver: Adam Rutherford, age 57, died at 8:15 a.m. And according to what Shannon's boyfriend Bryan had told Boone back in "Hearts and Minds" of season one, Shannon's father had died and left Boone's mother with his money (leading her to scam him). It seems another connection may be made here among the past lives of the survivors.
And the patient Jack chose to help first was, of course, the Sarah he ended up marrying. What became of that marriage had yet to be seen.
4. Which survivor suggests that perhaps something had happened to the raft?

Answer: Sun

After Shannon's mysterious encounter with a phantom-like drenched Walt in the jungle (and the disappearance of Vincent once again), the survivors in the cave begin to show fear for an uncertain future and the growing threat of the "Others" three hours before sunrise.

When hearing the account, Sun asks if maybe something had happened to the raft (Jack assures her otherwise). Although the fate of the rafters is not learned until the following episode, it is soon to be realized (by viewers) that Sun had good reason to worry. Whether or not Walt was actually there is questionable, since anything IS possible on this island, though it was most likely a vision.

It has been confirmed that Walt's words were "Push the button. Don't push the button. Bad." (The message was played backward, however, making it much more cryptic.) Shannon joins a growing list of those who had heard the whispers.
5. According to Hurley, what type of food was he buying when he decided to play the numbers and purchase the lottery ticket?

Answer: A frozen burrito

While heading back through the jungle, Kate and Locke discuss the "column of black smoke" that had apparently dragged Locke off earlier (and Locke implies that everyone may see something different when looking upon it). The word "crazy" comes up in both their and Jack and Hurley's discussions when Hurley admits to Jack that he had been in a psychiatric ward.

He reveals his winning of the lottery and adds that a meteorite had fallen on the chicken place he had worked at. (Recall that when Hurley saw the winning numbers on the screen, he was wearing his fast food uniform.) Also, Locke calls Hurley "Hugo" once again in this episode.
6. In this episode, who reiterates the concept of "live together, die alone"?

Answer: Kate

Kate says this to Jack before telling him that she was going to join Locke in his descent into the forbidden hatch. When she is inside of the hatch, terrified at what unknown loomed below, Kate used the counting technique that Jack had taught her back on their first day on the island. The day count is now 44, with supposedly 43 survivors remaining.
7. When Jack encounters Desmond in the flashback, Desmond hears that Jack does not believe in miracles. He responds, "Well, then I'm going to give you some advice anyway. You have to ______ ____ ____."

Answer: lift it up

Jack's encounter with Desmond in the stadium (and Desmond's strange appearance in the first place) immediately set up a red flag. From their conversation, one can gather from Desmond's claims that he was almost a doctor, was training for a "race around the world", and believed in miracles. Desmond told Jack, who was distraught over being unable to "fix" Sarah, that perhaps he would after all.

After telling Jack to "lift it up", and diverting attention back to the sprained ankle, Desmond made an interesting statement before departing: "Good luck, brother. See you in another life." And when Jack hears the voice say "brother" the next time, it is almost as if he is in another lifetime.
8. Throughout the episode, several objects were dropped down into the hatch before exploring it. Who dropped the flashlight into the hatch?

Answer: Kate

Kate went in first, lowered by Locke, and dropped the flashlight on the way down. She saw the a mirror angled below and realized that something was indeed down there. When the hatch lit brilliantly Kate disappeared, Locke went down after her. Previously, Locke had dropped a rock and realized there was shallow water down below.

When Jack arrived to find both missing, he dropped his torch before making the descent.
9. Inside the area below the hatch, Jack encountered a strange painted mural on the wall. Which was not part of the complex artwork?

Answer: All of the "cursed" numbers

Cryptic messages appeared all across Desmond's bizarre, colorful mural. Through the beam of Jack's flashlight could be seen, in particular, the shape of the sun with the number "108" written in the center. The numbers "5", "16" (or possibly "10), and "42" on the opposite side are also clearly legible, as well as the word "out", some tally marks, a giant green arrow pointing upwards, stick figures, and several drawings of a crude house. Certainly there is much more than artistic creativity to this symbolic representation of Desmond's mind, yet the meaning of which is yet to be determined.
10. A CD in Desmond's living quarters played the song titled, "Make Your Own Kind Of Music".

Answer: False

It was a record which played the song (not a CD). The presence of the record player and the old computer (which Locke later claimed not to have seen in twenty years) suggest that Desmond had resided below the world for quite some time. Besides these clues were leaky pipes, rusted pillars and buckets of paint which had been overgrown with mold.

As for the song, the 1969 classic hit by Mama Cass includes the repeating lyrics "You've got to make your own kind of music, sing your own special song" and puts the entire discovery in haunting perspective of the island's newest mystery.
