Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although he's very much a loner, Sawyer acts as if he would like to get a little closer to this character, giving her pet names right from the start such as the endearing 'Freckles.'

Answer: Kate

Sawyer appears to be more than a little sweet on Kate, a beautiful tomboy with a smattering of freckles across her nose and an awful secret to hide. He endows her with affectionate names such as Freckles, Sweet Cheeks, Puddin' and Sassafras. However, in moments of anger or sarcasm, she becomes the Mighty Huntress, the Belle of the Ball and Boar Expert!
2. An alpha male will always feel the competition from another alpha male, but Sawyer has a faint crack of insecurity in his tough as nails exterior. He becomes a little uncertain of himself around this character, who he calls 'Cowboy' and 'Jackass.'

Answer: Jack

Cowboy is a little difficult to connect to Jack. Less sublime Sawyer sobriquets for Jack include Doc, the Hero, Jacko, Saint Jack, Chico, Dr. Quinn and Dr. Do Right. Interestingly, Jack's father calls Sawyer "Cowboy" in the bar in Australia.
3. Keeping us uncertain of whether or not he actually dislikes this fellow castaway, 'Stay Puft' is one of many derogatory tags the politically incorrect Sawyer gives to this otherwise well liked character.

Answer: Hurley

An unlikely millionaire lottery-winner, Hurley has been saddled with a number of inconsiderate references about his weight such as Lardo, Pork Pie, Jabba, and Pillsbury. Stay Puft was the giant Marshmallow Man in the movie "Ghostbusters."
4. Prejudiced and highly suspicious of this character after the crash, Sawyer clashes violently with him, calling him in separate instances both 'Mohammed' and 'Ali.'

Answer: Sayid

Sayid is a former Iraqi soldier and communications specialist. Sawyer accuses him of being a terrorist, and implicates that he may have actually been responsible for bringing the plane down. Sayid's nicknames are all Middle Eastern references, including Abdul, Omar, Al Jazeera and Captain Falafel.
5. Approaching Sawyer to negotiate for insect repellent, the camera angles in on Sawyer from behind this character's long, slender legs. Sawyer looks up from his book and says, "You're in my light, Sticks."

Answer: Shannon

Shannon doesn't understand and questions, "Light sticks? What the hell is that?" Sawyer grins sardonically, "Light, comma, sticks. As in those legs of yours." Sawyer also calls Shannon 'Sweet Cheeks' as he does Kate. He calls Boone, Shannon's brother, 'Metro.'
6. Being unable to communicate with this survivor, and his reluctance to get involved with the rest, make for a difficult beginning in forming any kind of a friendship with this character, bestowed with nicknames such as 'Mr. Miyagi' and 'Sulu.'

Answer: Jin

Jin is Korean and doesn't speak English, so he attracts Oriental tags such as Mr. Miyagi, the Okinawan (Japanese) instructor from "The Karate Kid," and Sulu, the bridge helmsman from the original "Star Trek," played by Japanese-American George Takei. Sawyer learns to work together with Jin and Michael in their common goal of building the raft, but that doesn't prevent Jin from collecting other nicknames like Chief, Kato, Bruce and Chewie.
7. During a confrontation on the beach between Michael and Jin, Sawyer says, "You're gonna lecture us about lying, Betty? From the look on his face, even your old man here didn't know you speak English. How do we know she's not covering for him?" Which character has he nicknamed 'Betty'?

Answer: Sun

Sawyer gives this name to Sun in the episode called "Lost in Translation" but it isn't clear what the reference might be. In the same episode he calls Jin 'Bruce' which may be a reference to Chinese American martial arts actor Bruce Lee. Lee died in 1973 of a cerebral edema in reaction to a painkiller that he had taken while at the home of actress Betty Ting Pei. That's my theory, anyway!
8. In the first season episode called "Special" Sawyer teases this character as he pretends to be reading from Claire's diary after she has gone missing. "Diary, the little Limey runt just won't let up," he says, making fun of who?

Answer: Charlie

Sawyer actually seems to like Charlie and teases him as a big brother would. In the first season episode "The Greater Good" Charlie discovers that Claire's baby is soothed by the sound of Sawyer's voice. Although he acts annoyed at first, Sawyer gives in and reads whatever printed material he can find, even an auto magazine, in an effort to keep the child from crying. Charlie's other nicknames include Amigo, Sport and Chuckie.
9. After buying his berth on the raft and realizing it wasn't going to build itself, Sawyer pitched in and helped, although he didn't get along very well with the project's creator, and couldn't communicate with Jin. Who gets christened with nicknames like 'Captain,' 'Boss' and 'Pilot'?

Answer: Michael

Michael decides to build a raft and finds himself working with Jin and Sawyer, the two people on the island he is having the most difficulty getting along with. There is only room for four on the raft, and Sawyer buys his way aboard with supplies he has hoarded that Michael needs. Michael's other nicknames include Mickey, Daddy and Han, in concordance with Jin's name, Chewie.
10. Mystery and supernatural power seem to surround this character although he may not know how to harness his gifts. Sawyer has called him 'Tattoo,' 'Short Round' and 'Kazoo.'

Answer: Walt

Walt is Michael's 10 year old son. Having always been looking out only for himself, the life changing circumstances Sawyer finds himself in after the crash are forcing him to rediscover feelings he has buried and a new sense of self worth. Beginning to care about the people around him, and their survival and well-being, is replacing the hostility and revenge that drove him before.
11. In the episode called "Do No Harm" this character walks up to Michael, Walt and Sawyer who are cooking some fish. Jin is working on the raft nearby. Sawyer asks, "Hey, Mamacita. You want some fish?" Who is he talking to?

Answer: Claire

Claire declines his offer, saying she's really not hungry. She asks about the raft and Michael says it may be a week, maybe less before it is finished. He asks her if she's okay, as she is very pregnant and due any day, and she says she's fine. As she walks away, Sawyer brags smugly, "She likes me." He has also called her Missy Claire, or if you prefer, Miss Eclair.
12. There isn't a lot of interaction between Sawyer and this character in the first season, however, in the second season, they are both part of a hunting party that has gone into the jungle after Michael, who has taken off to find Walt. This results in one of the funniest of Sawyer's sobriquets. Who does he call 'Mr. Clean'?

Answer: Locke

Sawyer explains this by adding, "Hell, all you need is the earring and the mop." Daniel Boone is another nickname Sawyer gives Locke in this episode "The Hunting Party." Other characters, especially Charlie, have made up for Locke's lack of first season Sawyerisms, dubbing him Bald Guy, Geezer, Old Git, Great White Hunter, Mount Baldy, Warrior, Freak of Nature, Nut Case, The Man, Box Man and Bald Wanker.
13. After Walt is kidnapped and the raft has been sunk, Michael and Sawyer make it to shore and meet up again with Jin, but the three are immediately captured by a group of strangers. Among them is a large black man who Sawyer calls 'Shaft.'

Answer: Mr. Eko

This is Mr. Eko, a Nigerian priest who was among the survivors in the tail section of the plane. He is superbly played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Bernard is Rose's husband, who got separated from her just before the crash when he went to the restroom in the back of the plane. Zeke is a nickname Sawyer has given to the burly, bearded leader of the 'Others' who kidnapped Walt.
14. A hardened former police officer has assumed the role of leader of the survivors of the tail section. They decide to join the fuselage survivors, but by the time they reach the other camp, this character earns the nicknames of 'Cupcake,' 'Rambina,' 'Ponce de Leon,' and 'Hotlips.'

Answer: Ana Lucia

Sawyer gives Libby, a clinical psychologist, the nickname Shrink. Cindy, one of the airline stewardesses, disappears suddenly during the trek. Ana Lucia is one tough cookie, with a very anxious trigger finger. In spite of the harsh way she has treated him, and the pain from his festering gunshot wound, Sawyer manages to flirt with her. He can't help himself.
15. No one is safe from acquiring a Sawyer sobriquet, not even little Aaron, Claire's baby boy. What nickname has Sawyer given Aaron?

Answer: Baby Huey

Charlie calls the baby 'Turnip Head' during Claire's delay in giving him a name. Hurley is the one who describes Claire and Aaron as "the cute blonde and her poor island baby" while fretting over his assignment to inventory and ration the food found in the hatch.

In "The Greater Good" Aaron is crying incessantly, despite Charlie's best efforts to entertain him. Sawyer shouts, "Hey, Chuckie, want to keep that kid quiet? Baby Huey's like nails on a chalkboard," making Aaron the youngest person with a Sawyer sobriquet.
