After Claire was attacked at the caves, Hurley started making a list of all survivors. Boone suggested to Hurley that he get the manifest and check all names. Hurley found out that Sawyer had the manifest. Hurley asked him for it and he gave it to him. Hurley then checked his list with the manifest and realized Ethan is not on the manifest. Since Ethan was not on the plane, that means they are not alone on the island.

In "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues" Jack's back story is told. It shows Jack in surgery and the woman he is operating on dies. He then argues with his father about why had started the surgery even though he had been drinking. His father cuts an artery that Jack wasn't able to repair.

He asks Jack to sign a statement that says no one is at fault it just happened. Jack signs the statement because his father says it would mean the end to his career. Later, Jack is sitting at the review listening to his father's lies.

He can barely stomach what his father is saying. When they mention that the patient was pregnant, Jack can't take any more. He revises his statement and tells the board that his father had been drinking before the surgery.
