Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fort Christian, the Pit Stop for the race's first leg, was the first time at which a team was given which race item?

Answer: The Save

Although this twenty-fifth season of the race also featured an Express Pass (found in the second leg), it was the introduction of a completely new and powerful race mechanic, The Save, which a team could use if they placed last in an elimination leg to save themselves.

Instead, they could hand it over and keep on racing. Misti and Jim won the coveted item in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the first destination on the race, after flying there from New York City and completing the first tasks. At the same Pit Stop, three teams took penalties and one was sent home for not completing a tough Road Block.
2. In Leg 2, teams went punting on the River Cherwell, found in what UK city?

Answer: Oxford

Although teams went to the U.S. Virgin Islands in Leg 1, they flew across the pond to London, England at the start of Leg 2 and took on their first Detour task in two of the capital's most famous sites (but only after visiting the London Tower Bridge).

The leg ultimately culminated in a quick jaunt around the University City of Oxford where teams had to go punting on the River Cherwell and then visit the birthplace of Winston Churchill. In a tight race, Shelley and Nici narrowly ousted Dennis and Isabelle to stay in the race.
3. The third leg of the race brought teams to Scalloway in the Shetland Islands, where they had to work with which of these animals?

Answer: Sheep

Teams headed northward in Leg 3, taking the train up into Scotland and catching an Aberdeen ferry to the northernmost reaches of the UK, the Shetland Islands. In this leg of the race, teams encountered animals and people of all sorts, choosing to work with Shetland ponies to harvest peat moss or helping local Vikings make a traditional torch. For the final task, all teams had to herd sheep before driving to the Pit Stop at St. Ninian's Isle where firefighters Michael and Scott, suffering from injury and driving the wrong direction, were the third team eliminated.
4. In Leg 4, teams drove to the city of Malmö, Sweden crossing the Øresund Bridge. They did so in which vehicle?

Answer: Car

Leaving the Shetland Islands in Leg 4, teams were actually instructed to fly to Copenhagen, Denmark-- not Sweden. Upon their arrival, teams located Ford C-Max hybrid vehicles in the airport parking lot and a clue instructing them to drive across the Øresund Bridge using the car's energy-saving features. If they arrived using less than a tenth of a gallon of gas they would immediately receive their next clue, otherwise they would have to head to a nearby city square to answer geography trivia questions to get their next clue and return to Copenhagen.
5. Which team was eliminated in front of the VM Houses in Copenhagen, Denmark in Leg 4?

Answer: None of these

Leg 4 was a leg of intense focus as teams, feeling the fatigue of the first three legs, needed to head to Denmark and Sweden while keeping their eyes on the prize. After focusing on gas mileage at the start of the leg, teams engaged with a Detour task requiring either attention to detail or grit, balance, and determination. For their Road Block task, team members also had to memorize complex food orders. To round out the leg, Misti and Jim showed up in last place.

When they handed over the Save, they were told that they had arrived at a non-elimination Pit Stop and were given this safeguard back for future use.
6. In Legs 5 and 6, teams navigated their way through Morocco, visiting the market of Jemaa el-Fnaa in what city?

Answer: Marrakesh

While most of the fifth leg took teams throughout the labyrinthine alleys of Jemaa el-Fnaa and forced them to act as fishes out of water in all manner of Western African activities, the sixth leg of the race took them further out of their comfort zones, leaving the Old Town and city center and venturing out into the outlying Berber towns. Both legs of the race were elimination legs with Keith and Whitney being brought down by a Detour (and Double U-Turn) in the market and Shelley and Nici falling behind navigating their way out of Marrakesh in the following string of tasks.
7. Teams only visited the Teatro Politeama in Sicily in Leg 7 for which of these?

Answer: The 'Posers' Detour option

Teams ended off Leg 7 by picking one of two Detour options in the heart of Palermo, Sicily, both of which only had four stations to fit six teams. As such, while four teams went to complete the 'Painters' task, Brooke and Robbie and Amy and Maya were forced to complete 'Posers', a task sending them to Teatro Politeama to watch opera performers for a costume-matching task.

It panned out-- both teams checked into the Pit Stop at Villa Niscemi quicker than some of the teams who arrived at the 'Painters' Detour earlier.
8. In Malta in Leg 8, which team used the Express Pass at the harbour pictured here?

Answer: Adam and Bethany

Teams ferried from Sicily to Malta in Leg 8 and partook in a series of tasks all around the island nation. The Detour proved to be a unique one since it was the first time in which teams were given a Detour with two choices, but no additional info. As such, teams went blindly to either the harbour or the Gate of Provence.

In the former, 'Flag', none of the teams were able to complete the task (as it was too difficult), but Adam and Bethany, running out of time to use their Express Pass, skipped it entirely.

They headed to the Pit Stop immediately.
9. Atop Mount Faber in the City of Singapore, teams had to locate a statue of which of these to close out Leg 9?

Answer: Merlion

The final task of Leg 9, following the Detour and Double U-Turn, required that teams search through five of Singapore's merlion statues for the only one that had a clue box waiting next to it. This took four of the five teams up to the top of Mount Faber for the clue sending them off to the Pit Stop (the fifth team, Adam and Bethany, never went because they got the Fast Forward). Teams in this leg also visited the Marina Bay Sands, enjoyed fresh coconut in Changi Village, and faced fear of the Double U-Turn.

A risky Fast Forward attempt spelled doom for Kym and Alli and they were eliminated in fifth.
10. Teams visiting the rice fields of Naic in the Philippines were tasked with working with what animal (in Leg 10)?

Answer: Water buffalo

Revisiting the classic "Amazing Race 5" task involving using an ox to dredge up a buried clue (the originator of the phrase "my ox is broken!"), teams faced a Switchback at the end of Leg 10 which required they search rice paddies for clues buried in the mud before checking into their Pit Stop.

It proved to be for placement's sake; all teams faced a non-elimination leg and the top four continued in the Manila, Philippines area through Leg 11 (during which Brooke and Robbie went from worst to first). All four teams also progressed to the final leg back in Los Angeles as well.
