Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1976 Christmas Special 'The Desperate Hours', why are Fletcher and Godber sent to the governor's office?

Answer: Brewing illicit booze

In this episode, an unstable prisoner, Reg Urwin takes Mr Barrowclough hostage and starts demanding a helicopter. Fletcher and Godber are held hostage too, with the governor's secretary.
2. In the 1976 Christmas Special 'The Desperate Hours', we learn Mr Barrowclough's first name. What is it?

Answer: Henry

Fletcher is the hero of the hour after disarming Urwin. When Mr Barrowclough telephones his wife, to say he will be late home, his wife thinks he is having an affair with Mrs Jameson, the governor's secretary. Mrs Jameson calls Mr Barrowclough by his first name. The prison wardens are even willing to overlook the illicit booze brewing.
3. In 'A Storm in a Teacup', what has Harris stolen?

Answer: Pills

In this episode, Fletcher has to deal with disappearing tablets and Harry Grout. Harris drops the pills into Fletcher's teacup when Mr Mackay catches him. The pills are actually for a dog's bad breath - something Fletcher only learns after swallowing them!
4. In 'Poetic Justice', who is the first to greet the new prisoner, Judge Stephen Rawley?

Answer: Prison officer

In this episode, Fletcher gets a new cellmate. It is none other than the judge the sentenced him. Fletcher is not pleased, as he could have bribed the judge and got a lighter sentence. The judge is in jail for bribery and corruption.
5. In 'Rough Justice', what item of Judge Rawley's is stolen?

Answer: His watch

In this episode, the prisoners hold a 'Kangaroo Court' in Fletcher's cell, to work out who stole the Judge Rawley's watch. The chief suspect is Harris.
6. In 'Pardon Me', how long has Blanco been in jail?

Answer: 17 years

In this episode, Blanco, the old prisoner, has his parole refused. Fletcher sets up an appeal committee to get the decision reversed. Even Mr Barrowclough signs the petition - apparently.
7. In 'Pardon Me', what was Blanco jailed for?

Answer: Murder

Blanco has always said he never did the crime he was jailed for. Blanco's wife was having an affair so Blanco killed her and put her in his deep freezer. Blanco is released on parole, and admits to Fletcher that he did kill his wife - and his wife's lover too.
8. In 'A Test of Character', which O' level exam is Godber sitting?

Answer: History

In this episode, Fletcher and some other prisoners try to help Godber by stealing the exam papers. Warren steals the Biology papers instead of the History ones.
9. In 'Final Stretch', whom does Godber get in a fight with, jeopardising his parole?

Answer: Jarvis

In this episode, Godber is finally released on parole. Godber fought with Jarvis after Jarvis made rude comments about Fletcher's eldest daughter, Ingrid. Godber has been writing to Ingrid in prison, and plans to keep in touch with her on the outside. Fletcher is left in prison; he has another ten months to serve.
10. What was the title of the spin-off series of "Porridge"?

Answer: "Going Straight"

I invented the other three options, although there is a television programme called "Prison Break". "Going Straight" featured Fletcher and Godber, finally released from prison. It was not as successful as Porridge. There was also a film made out of "Porridge" in 1979, starring Ronnie Barker, Richard Beckinsale and the other members of Slade Prison.
