Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Batman Returns" consists of 3D action scenes, in which the main weapon is punching, and 2D action scenes, in which the main weapon is the Batarang. There is also a Batmobile Chase stage. Which of these stages does not feature a 2D action scene, and consists entirely of 3D action scenes?

Answer: Stage 6 - Circus Train

The vast majority of Stage 6 takes place atop the Circus Train, with only the boss battle being on "ground level". Because of the linear nature of trains, the variation in this stage is extremely limited, although the need to jump gantries at one point is an interesting distraction.
2. There are five difficulty settings in "Batman Returns": Easy, Normal, Hard, Special and Mania. In which stage does the difficulty selected affect the health bars of all enemies other than the boss?

Answer: Stage 5 - To The Batmobile!

Sadly, the idea of increasing enemies' health according to the selected difficulty is exclusive to Stage 5, in which the only standard enemies encountered are Bikers. The only other time enemies' health is affected in this way is when they are caught in explosions. The higher the difficulty, the less health they lose in an explosion.
3. Apart from the standard 5000 points scored for completing a stage, how many points are scored during the battle with Campaign V. at the end of Stage 5?

Answer: 0

This is yet another quirk of Stage 5. Throughout the rest of the game, points are scored for every punch, but in Stage 5, one scores points only when enemies are killed. As a result, each hit on Campaign V. is worth precisely nothing, and then insult is added to injury when no points are forthcoming during his lengthy explosion.

This quirk also makes scoring points on Stage 5 particularly difficult on the Mania setting, and for that reason, attempts to score a record number of points are best attempted on the Easy and Normal settings.
4. Which of these bosses does not start off with a purple health bar?

Answer: T. Strongman

Catwoman begins with the same amount of health both times she is encountered, The Penguin has a purple health bar when he first appears, although just one hit will bring it down to green, and Duck V. requires five hits to be brought to the green level. T. Strongman starts out with a green health bar.
5. What is the main colour of the Thin Clowns who carry dynamite?

Answer: Green

The standard Thin Clowns who have no special moves are blue, the ones who back-flip across the screen upon arrival are yellow and the jugglers are brown. If Batman takes too long to defeat a green, dynamite-wielding Thin Clown, the enemy will briefly go off-screen before returning with more dynamite.
6. There are two areas in Stage 5 - To The Batmobile! where Batman can pick up bonus items. How many points are each of these items worth?

Answer: 500

All these values appear as bonuses throughout the game, and are distinguishable by their colours. Often, health replenishers become replaced with score bonuses on the harder difficulty settings, but the bonuses on Stage 5 are always worth 500 points, regardless of the difficulty rating selected.
7. Which of these enemies does not always have the same size health bar?

Answer: Fire Clown

All Fire Clowns have the same size health bar except the very first one, who has a health bar similar in size to the Knife Throwers. The Fire Clowns, Sword Swallowers and Knife Throwers appear only in 3D action scenes while Tall Clowns are exclusively in 2D action scenes.
8. When The Penguin is encountered for the second time, what colour is his health bar?

Answer: White

White is the next colour up from purple and appears only twice in the game, with The Penguin at the end of Stage 7 and O. Grinder at the end of Stage 6. The other three colours do not feature as health bars.
9. The first area of Stage 6 - Circus Train consists solely of which enemy?

Answer: Fat Clown

This is the only area in the game to consist solely of Fat Clowns, although there are a couple of areas earlier in the game which feature only Thin Clowns. The closest Bazooka C. comes to such exclusivity is near the start of Stage 7, where the only other enemies to appear alongside them are Bikers.
10. When The Penguin is encountered for the first time, how many times does he have to be hit to be defeated?

Answer: 64

Because the battle is in a 2D action stage, the number of hits required is always the same. Interestingly, Campaign V., the boss of the following stage, requires exactly the same number of hits to be destroyed.
