The "Colossal Cave Adventure" is the precursor for many similar dungeon exploration games. Perhaps, the most popular incarnation of the game was called, "Adventure 550." The programming code was small enough to fit on the computers popular in the early 1980's.

"Zork" went one step beyond the basic text adventure by allowing complete sentences in the game parser. The player is allowed to type in more explicit commands and references. Infocom produced many subsequent titles and more challenging adventures. The puzzles could be quite difficult to solve and hint books were also offered in order to solve the game.
