Following the popular 60s thread,I've decided to post a thread on the best songs of the last half century.

These songs can be from any genre(rock, pop, folk, jazz)and can be singles, from albums etc.

Here's my Top Ten(1960-2010)

1) Hey Jude-The Beatles

2) Imagine-John Lennon

3)Satisfaction-The Rolling Stones

4)House of the Rising Sun-The Animals

5)Love Her Madly-The Doors

6)Revolution-The Beatles

7)The Jean Genie-David Bowie

8)Baba O'Riley-The Who

9)In My Life-The Beatles

10)Both Sides,Now-Joni Mitchell

This is a provisional list and may change;you can post as many lists as you want. After a couple of months I'll call for FINAL lists and I will compile the Top 50 songs for the past 50 years(points 10-1st;9-2nd etc.)

What are your top ten songs?

One of the songs in Arpeggionist's list, Y'rushalayim shel zahav, was a hit all over the world. (There may be others we've heard without realising!)

It's just occurred to me that I might have put "Erev shel shoshanim" on my list. I thought it was an old song, but I now see it may have been from the 1950s.

(I'll leave my list as it is, just because I said I would. This is one of my favorite tunes, though.)

I echo Lochalsh's thanks. Job well done Mark.

That is a great list of songs and I think it clearly demonstrates that a lot of FT members have an appreciation of fine music. Three of the songs in my personal top ten have made it onto this list. (Dylan, CS&N, The Who).

I must admit I'm surprised that 'Stairway to Heaven', which regularly appears in the top ten of listener polls on radio stations, didn't make its way in here. Then again I'm not sure if anybody voted for it.

Once again, well done and thanks Mark.

^ Stairway to Heaven was in my first list :)

Thanks so much Mark. It cant have been easy going back through all those lists and tallying the results. Maybe Ill do something similar with movies.

The top 100 UK songs (as determined by The Guardian music journalists) have been published today.

Have a look at the list. (no pay wall)

Too many 1980s songs at the top for me!
