Posted by: redwaldo
Date: Jan 10 11

Following the popular 60s thread,I've decided to post a thread on the best songs of the last half century.

These songs can be from any genre(rock, pop, folk, jazz)and can be singles, from albums etc.

Here's my Top Ten(1960-2010)

1) Hey Jude-The Beatles

2) Imagine-John Lennon

3)Satisfaction-The Rolling Stones

4)House of the Rising Sun-The Animals

5)Love Her Madly-The Doors

6)Revolution-The Beatles

7)The Jean Genie-David Bowie

8)Baba O'Riley-The Who

9)In My Life-The Beatles

10)Both Sides,Now-Joni Mitchell

This is a provisional list and may change;you can post as many lists as you want. After a couple of months I'll call for FINAL lists and I will compile the Top 50 songs for the past 50 years(points 10-1st;9-2nd etc.)

What are your top ten songs?

No problems Godwit. House of the Rising Sun was voted No. 1 song for the 60's in a popular thread on this site last year.

Rolling Stone magazine was accused of weighing their best songs list too heavily in the baby boomer era (60s and 70s). 'Course there was so much fantastic music in those years. But, I took a look at the infamous eminem. He's good. Powerful. Also growing up and learning. So he'll go on my 2nd Best Songs list. Strangely enough.
A. Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven
B. Don McLlean American Pie
C. Beatles Yesterday
D. Kansas Dust in the Wind
E. Eminem I'm Not Afraid
F. Eminem Love the Way You Lie
G. Bruce Springsteen I'm on Fire
H. Creedence Clearwater Revival Have You Ever Seen the Rain
I. Doors Riders on the Storm
J. Dolly Parton Jolene
K. It's a Beautiful Day White Bird

I think Arethra Franklin goes in here too. For either "Respect" or "Chain of Fools", both 1967. She had a number one single in 1987, also.

You have a great list. The kind of list where you want to stop and sing, and listen to, every song.

Except "Satisfaction". I loathe, despise and can't stand that song. I know, I know, the other half of the population loves it. Can't we put Arethra in there instead!? Or Elvis Costello. Or...

We still need more lists from music-wise Ft'ers.

I'm a music lover! I love Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Joel, Schubert, Sedaka, Sibelius...

I also like and admire Eminem. The man's a poetic genius.

PS Godwit - were you tempted to add links for your choices?

These aren't in order of any kind. My choices are songs that touched me at a particular time in my life.

1: Billy Joel - 'The Way You Are'
2: The Beatles - 'Eleanor Rigby'
3: Nina Simone - 'Sinner Man'
4: Lambert, Hendricks and Ross - 'Twisted'
5: Bob Dylan - 'Blowin' in the Wind'
6: Leonard Cohen - 'Hallelujah' (the k.d.lang version is sublime)
7: The Guess Who? - 'These Eyes'
8: Bryan Adams - 'Everything I Do'
9: Joni Mitchell - 'Both Sides Now' (the version she recorded later in life'
10: Anne Murray - 'You Needed Me' (I also like the version recorded by anne Murray and Shania Twain)

I protest! There are more than ten great songs from the past 50 years. Maybe we should do lists of the ten best bluessongs, jazz, folk, etc.

Here's something a little different. Although I enjoy listening to many different genres and languages, my favourites tend to be Estonian originals or covers of songs that are well-known all over the world. These beautiful songs may move one to tears. Some are new, some have enchanted people's hearts for decades. I suggest to listen to them but be warned - they are addictive!

- Siis, kui maailm magab veel (When The World’s Still Fast Asleep) – Hele Kõre, Kristjan Kasearu (a love song from the musical „Romeo and Juliet”)

Lesley153: yes I like it a lot when people add links. You can leap over and enjoy what they enjoy. I have listened to everything linked here and what a great collection of songs.

I would have liked to inundate everyone with links of my favorites but I don't know how to add links.

Yah. I know. I read ehow and it makes no sense to me. I bet a 5th grader can do it but I cannot.

This is on the Fun Trivia News page. I'll try it:

To add a link for your reference, highlight the URL in your browser. Right-click on your mouse and choose "Copy." Left-click in the FunTrivia answer box, then right-click your mouse again and choose "Paste." The link will show automatically after you submit your answer, but it must begin with "http" and it must be separated from any other text or punctuation by a space.

Godwit, it's about time. :)

(You can shorten your link if you think it's too long. Copy it, then go to tinyurl.com and follow the instructions there. It makes for a neater ost, and neatness is paramount! :) )
