Wilder, Laura Ingalls
9. There were nine books in the 'Little House' series starting with 'The Little House in the Big Woods', and concluding with 'The First Four Years'.
February 7, 1867. Laura Elizabeth Ingalls (Wilder) was born February 7, 1867, in a log cabin in the forests, surrounding Pepin,Wisconsin. Mary Ingalls was born in 1866, Carrie Ingalls (Swanzey) was born on August 6, 1870 and Grace Ingalls (Dow) was born in 1877.
True . Charles Fredrick Ingalls was born on November 1, 1875. He died at age nine months on August 2, 1876.
1885. Laura Elizabeth Ingalls and Almanzo James Wilder were married in the town of DeSmet, on August 25, 1885 by Rev. Edward Brown. They remained together for sixty-four years until Almanzo's death on the 23rd of October 1949.
Bess. Laura was called 'Bess' by Almanzo. She used the nickname to distinguish herself from Almanzo's older sister Laura Wilder. The nickame was derived from her middle name Elizabeth. In the television programme however he called her 'Beth'.
Mansfield. Their home was called 'Rocky Ridge Farm'. The home is preserved as 'The Laura Ingalls Wilder Home and Museum of Mansfield'.
65. Many of the tales that appear in the 'Little House' books had been published as short stories in various magazines. But, Laura didn't offically start the 'Little House' books until she was sixty-five years old. She only did this upon the request and encouragement of her daughter, Rose. Laura was doubtful anyone would want to read them. Thankfully Rose convinced her otherwise.
False . Grace and Carrie were alive to see the books published. Pa (Charles) Ingalls died in 1902. Ma (Caroline) Ingalls died in 1924. Mary Ingalls died in 1928 while visiting sister Carrie. Grace Ingalls Dow died in 1941. Carrie Ingalls Swanzey lived to read eight of the nine books before her death in 1946, leaving Laura as the sole surviving member of her family.
1957. Laura died three days after her ninetieth birthday on February 10, 1957. Rose Wilder Lane died on October 30, 1968.
Wisconsin. This was the setting for 'Little House in the Big Woods'
Charles. Laura's Pa was Charles Ingalls, her Ma was Caroline Quiner Ingalls.
Grace. Grace was the baby of the family who became lost on the prairie in 'By the Shores of Silver Lake'. Laura found her in what she thought was a fairy ring, in reality it was a buffalo wallow.
Scarlet Fever. Mary was able to go to a college for the blind in Iowa, with Laura's wages as a teacher helping to pay her tuition.

The government decided not to open it up for white settlement, it belonged to the Indians.. Their house was three miles over the line in Indian Territory.
Minnesota. Their first home was a sod dugout on the banks of Plum Creek. They later moved to a wood house, but Pa had trouble paying for it because of a plague of grasshoppers.

A rag doll. She named the doll Charlotte. It replaced her previous 'doll' which was really only a corncob.

Manly and Bess. It was traditional in Almanzo's family to have one boy of the generation with that name. Laura's middle name was Elizabeth.

Mansfield, Missouri. The 'Land of the Big Red Apple'. You can visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead and museum just outside of Mansfield and see Pa's fiddle, Laura's jewelry box, and many of their other treasures.
Jack. Sam and David were the Christmas horses from 'On the Banks of Plum Creek'. Jack faithfully followed the family from Wisconsin to Kansas to Minnesota, and died of old age before they left for South Dakota.

Nellie Oleson . Laura got her revenge: first when they were little, Laura made Nellie swim in an area where she got covered in leaches. Later, all Nellie wanted was to ride with Almanzo, but Laura got to first.
With a blacksnake whip. The older boys from Hardscrabble Hill thought it was great fun to beat up the teacher, and had even killed one of them. But Almanzo's teacher used a blacksnake whip on the leader, and they never bothered him again.
He didn't like Rose.. They got another dog later, Nero, who thought it was his duty to watch over and protect baby Rose.
