Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Dogtanian
Francois. Francois and his friends have gathered at the edge of the town to see him off. They mock him at first, then all wish him luck, showing that they do really like him, despite all the fighting.
The last time Dogtanian sees Francois, he has a plaster (band-aid) on him. Where is it? | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
His cheek. Although his fights with Dogtanian always end up with him getting a lump on his head, Francois, for some reason, has a plaster on his cheek now.
Dogtanian's father says he used his sword in battle for a King. What was the name of the King? | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
Henry. King Henry IV, to be precise. The current king of France was named Louis, but Dogtanian's father was talking about his youth, so Louis was probably a direct descendent.
When the dogs run away from the battle with Dogtanian, making their excuses as they go, one mentions he has a lesson in which musical instrument? | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
Clavichord. They mostly mumble as they run away, but one of them clearly says "er... I have a clavichord lesson" before he leaves.
How many dogs does Dogtanian find himself up against during his battle with Francois? | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
7. Dogtanian says that it is seven against one when he jumps out of the tree. The other six dogs all make a hasty exit though, once they see how strong Dogtanian is.
A suit of armour. Dogtanian has stolen the armour to play a trick on Francois. A trick which defies all the laws of science - he sits in a tree suspending the armour from string, while it whirls round all over the hill!
What does Dogtanian's mother say that the mayor spends all day doing at the Town Hall? | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
Playing cards. Dogtanian's father makes a joke about Monsieur La Vache, and his wife scolds him, telling him that the mayor spent all day playing cards. This is an odd conversation - it probably suffered in the translation from Spanish to English.
Francois' mother. The mayor's wife comes to visit Dogtanian's mother about their sons' fighting. She says that it is all Dogtanian's fault, and that she wants him kept away from Francois.
When Dogtanian is battling with his father, his father tells him to use how many of his senses? | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
5 . He tells Dogtanian that to fight effectively he could not just rely on his eyes, he had to use all of his senses.
A servant. Dogtanian looks untidy, and has patches on his clothes, so the Muskateer thinks that he is Dogtanian Senior's servant.
Francois' teacher is carrying two books when he sees the children. What colour are they? | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
One red, one green. The teacher is not an important character in the story, in fact I think this is his only appearance. I'm guessing he was included to show that Francois was properly educated, while Dogtanian was taught by his father.
Francois makes a comment to Dogtanian during their first fight scene. Complete his quote: "What kind of nobleman wears _____?" | "Dogtanian's Journey"
|
Patches. Francois La Vache is Dogtanian's rival. Monsieur La Vache is Francois' father, and the town mayor.
1625. It is set in 17th Century France, with most of the storyline taking place in Paris. This episode, however, is set in Dogtanian's home village.
Bird. The camera pans up to the sky, and a big black crow flies across. It seems really out of place and out of proportion, and it's a bit jarring!
Sandy's saddle. He had to leave Sandy as payment for the damages to the inn. He carries on to Paris with the heavy saddle balanced on his head. Wouldn't it have made sense to leave the saddle with the horse?
He cooks food on it. He uses it as a skewer to cook beef on. Dogtanian realises while he is eating, and he is not impressed.
His mother. He feels homesick, and is thinking about his mother. This reminds him that he has her magical ointment in his bag, which he uses, and feels much better in the morning.
The Black Moustache's Squire. The squire and the innkeeper both fight Dogtanian when the Black Moustache goes to meet Milady. They are armed with large sticks, but he still beats them. When Dogtanian goes out to watch the meeting with Milady, the innkeeper creeps up and hits him on the head, then the squire hits him repeatedly, until he finally falls unconscious.
This episode contains the famous apple slicing scene from the opening credits, where Dogtanian slices an apple into tiny pieces while it is in midair. Why did he do this? | "Dogtanian Meets The Black Moustache"
|
He was showing he was a match for the Black Moustache, who just did a similar trick. This seems to be the scene that everyone remembers when they think of Dogtanian. The apple stays in midair for an impossible amount of time, and after he has sliced it, Dogtanian blows on the pieces and they float like feathers.
When he goes to the stables and sees his horse. The Black Moustache's horse is tied up in a stall in the stables, and Dogtanian realises whose horse it is when Sandy reacts.
This episode marks the first appearance of three major characters. The first was the Black Moustache, aka Count Rochefort, the second was Milady, who was the third? | "Dogtanian Meets The Black Moustache"
|
Planchet. Planchet is a bear who works as a stable hand at the inn. He reappears later in the series when he brings Sandy back to Dogtanian, and ends up staying with Dogtanian as his servant.
The chandelier. He knocks it down when he is showing off to the innkeeper. The innkeeper says he doesn't know who Dogtanian is, and is wary of him. Dogtanian gets defensive and threatens him with his sword, and this is when he breaks the chandelier.
pig . The majority of characters in the series are dogs, but there are occasional appearances by pigs, cats, bears and foxes.
Blue. It was a very pale blue. Dogtanian's hat had a yellow feather, to match his red and yellow outfit.
Sandy's was cropped, the other horse's was long. I think that Sandy's short tail makes him look even more decrepit!
Stuck-Up Snob. Dogtanian finds it impossible to ignore the Black Moustache's insults, and chases after him demanding a fight.
Country Bumpkin. Dogtanian is called a country bumpkin a number of times in the story, by a number of different characters. This encounter starts the rivalry between Dogtanian and the Black Moustache, which is present throughout the whole series.
Cardinal Richelieu and Count Rochefort are discussing an important figure at the end of the episode. Who are they talking about? | Dogtanian Meets His Match
|
The Duke of Buckingham. The Duke of Buckingham is the Prime Minister of England, and there is suspicion over his relationship with Queen Anne. This is the first glimpse we get of Richelieu and Rochefort's grander scheme, and it lets us into their personalities a little more in preperation for developments later in the story.
Although Widimer is the leader of the Cardinal's guards, this group seems to have one dog who is in charge. What does he do after the guards lose the battle? | Dogtanian Meets His Match
|
Breaks his sword. He snaps his sword after losing the battle. This character, who remains nameless, would be a far more capable leader than Widimer, and I think it's a pity he doesn't have a more major role in the series, because he is a very likable character. The Muskahounds are surprised to come across one of the Cardinal's guards who has such a sense of honour.
Throws rocks at them. He throws two rocks at the crossbowmen, and jogs their aim. It seems to be a recurring theme in this episode - Dogtanian injuring others with rocks!
Dogtanian. He tries to aim at Dogtanian, who is battling one of the guards. Aramis stops Widimer by throwing his dagger at him.
