Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the series, Shinji kills a total of nine angels: Sachiel, Shamshel, Ramiel, Israfel (with Asuka), Matarael, Leliel, Bardiel, Zeruel and Tabris, but four of them were actually killed in "berserker" mode.

Answer: False

During his first battle, Shinji is seriously attacked by Sachiel until Unit-01 wakes up, counter-attacks Sachiel and it auto-destructs in a final attempt to destroy the EVA. In Episode 16, Leliel "eats" Unit-01 and after being in the Sea of Dirac, the EVA goes berserk and kills the angel with its progressive knife. Finally, Zeruel is brutally killed by berserk Unit-01, which gets the angel's S2 engine after devouring it.

The case of Bardiel differs from the others because the EVA was controlled by Rei's Dummy Plug (independent attacking system).
2. In the Director Cut's version of Ep. 22, we see a close-up of Asuka's mind being raped. In this scene, some important factors about the Second Child's true personality are finally exposed in a 4 minute psychologically-themed footage. What important fact involving Shinji is also revealed in the process?

Answer: Asuka likes Shinji

One of the most important scenes of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion', Asuka's mind-rape reveals a lot of important stuff about Asuka's feelings and the causes of her "tough-girl" nature: Her mother's suicide, Kaji's constant rejection and Shinji's indifference.

It's shown that she's actually attracted to the Third Child and in several occasions she tried to get his attention by using her "gifts", but she never got a response from the young boy. Finally in 'End of Evangelion', she shows Shinji by caressing his cheek that she really cared about him.
3. There are three specific German names in 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. If mixed, they all result in the three elements that synchronize with the Evangelions. 'Nerv' stands for 'Nerv' and 'Gehirn' stands for 'Brain'. Which is the mising element?

Answer: 'Seele'

Seele means 'Soul/Spirit' in german. Therefore, Brain and Nerves (mental elements) need to be in a stable balance with the spirit and soul (emotional/existential elements) in order to synchronize with the Evangelions. The connection between the three is indirectly shown in the series as the SEELE organization supported both GEHIRN and NERV agencies. Also notice that the three names are always showed in 'CAPITALS'.
4. Misato Katsuragi is well known for her heavy beer drinking, which continues until Kaji's death. How many beer brands does Misato drink through the series?

Answer: Four

Misato drinks a total of four different brands of beer in 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. In Episode 5, Misato drinks two brands at the same time: "Yebisu" and "Yebisu Premium", both cans the same. Then, in Episode 7, she changes to "Yebichu" (similar can with some kind of drawing/logo in the center) and finally, in Episode 10, she drinks "BOA" (grey can with red letters that read 'Kuroshio Bussan'). After Ryoji Kaji's death, Misato switches to UCC canned coffee, also featured in 'Rebuild of Evangelion 1.01: You Are (Not) Alone'.
5. Before Second Impact, this meta-biology professor became socially and romantically interested with one of his students/mentors. Soon after, he found himself being the sponsor and right hand man of her husband, who offered him an important job as the vicedirector of a secret UN special agency. Who's this 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' character?

Answer: Kouzou Fuyutsuki

Deputy Commander Kouzou Fuyutsuki met Yui Ikari when he was teaching physics at the Kyoto University. He always "felt" something for Yui, as he admits in the series that when he found out that she was getting married he took an even deeper dislike for her future husband (and second mentor), Gendo Rokubungi (later Ikari).

After Second Impact, he started working with Ikari at NERV, serving as the vicedirector and advisor of Gendo. Also, in 'End of Evangelion' it's shown that Rei/Lilith takes the form of Yui when initiating Fuyutsuki's Instrumentality, which implies that Kouzou was in love with her.
6. The Fourth Children, Touji Suzuhara, isn't really an EVA fan. In fact, he always thought that EVA pilots were all a little bit crazy. So, when he agreed to pilot the Unit-03, what did he want for exchange?

Answer: He wanted to move his sister to NERV's medical facilities

Personally, I think Touji Suzuhara is one of the funniest characters in the series. He is the stereotypical sport jock who usually wears black/white stripped jogging clothes. He likes sports (mostly basketball) and it seems that he has a little crush on the class-rep, Hikari Horaki.

In Episode 17, he accesses to pilot the EVA Unit-03 on the condition that his injured sister be moved to NERV's private hospital (medical facilities...). Finally, after the tragic events caused by the fight vs. Bardiel, he loses his left leg and then moves from Tokio-3 joining Kensuke and the rest of the children from their classroom.
7. Which 2005 manga, published by Kadokawa Shoten, is basically an adaptation of the famous PS2 video game "Girlfriend of Steel/Iron Maiden 2", inspired in the alternative universe seen in the Ep. 26 of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'?

Answer: Angelic Days

"Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days" (aka "The Iron Maiden 2nd") is one of various stories being inspired by the alternative universe stated in the Episode 26 of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. In this 'parallel universe', Evangelions and everything related to them doesn't exist. Shinji and Asuka are childhood friends and share a love/hate relationship on which the main story is centered.

This romantic comedy is also an adaptation of the PlayStation 2 game, "Girlfriend of Steel 2", were Shinji gets the chance to choose his real love: Asuka or Rei.
8. In 2002, a group of fans decided to make a publicity about a fake continuation of the TV series, which featured a poster with Rei, Shinji and Asuka (all grown up). How did they name the project?

Answer: Reprise of Evangelion

"Reprise of Evangelion" was vaguely based on its predecessor and the information featured in the poster made it even more incredible: The director's name (Shigerou Aoba, a First Lieutenant and computer technician from NERV), the illogical existence of Rei (who died in 'End of Evangelion') and the fact that the original name was "Ai wa sadame, sadame wa shi" ("Love is destiny, destiny is death"), which is the name of an online novel. Gainax confirmed that the project didn't exist and soon after, they started working in 'Rebuild of Evangelion', a remake of the TV series, divided in four parts (1.0, launched in September 2007 and 2.0 announced for December 2008/January 2009).
9. In 'End of Evangelion' (Episode 25), there's a grammatical error at the camera screen where the Mass Production Evas are seen cornering Asuka in Unit-02. In here, the information screen reads: "Camera: Geo-FRONT Lebel: 2..."

Answer: True

Indeed, there are several graphic mistakes in 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. For example, in Episode 8 ("Asuka Strikes!"), it is shown that Asuka wears her iconic yellow dress and then, when she undresses and puts her plug suit, the yellow dress has now an additional white bra, which she never used back then. Also, notice that Ritsuko Akagi's earrings are actually "pasted" in her ears and that in Episode 9, when the MAGIs are analysing Israfel's ADN data, we see that the screen reads: "Patttern confirmed".

It's all about being perfectionist.
10. Who wrote the German telephone conversation between Asuka and her stepmother in Episode 22: "Don't Be"?

Answer: Yuko Miyamura

Yuko Miyamura (Asuka's seiyuu) got so involved with her character that she even had the chance, and pleasure, of writing this interesting conversation between Asuka and her stepmother, in german language. The conversation includes an interesting message for Shinji (and the fans), were Asuka says that he's a "good boy" and that she's very "popular" with him.

It seems that Asuka still had hopes with little Ikari after all. Too bad... maybe after Third Impact?
