Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of Jacob's sons had a mother who died in childbirth?

Answer: Benjamin

All of these are sons of Jacob -- see Genesis 35:21-26 -- but each has a different mother. Reuben, Jacob's eldest son, was the child of Leah; Dan of Bilhah, a handmaiden in the house; Asher of Zilpah, another handmaiden; and Benjamin was the second son of Jacob's favourite wife, Rachel, and younger brother of Jospeh. Genesis 35:16-20 records that Rachel, after giving birth to this boy, named him "Ben-oni" (Son of Pain) with her dying breath, but that Jacob changed that name to "Benjamin" (Son of Right).

2. Angels announcing an impending birth is not uncommon in the Bible. Of the choices below, whose birth was NOT foretold by angels?

Answer: Paul

Angels foretold the birth of Jesus, first telling Mary and then announcing the phenomenon to shepherds. Angels also announced the birth of Samson (Judges chapter 13) and John the Baptist (Luke chapter 1). The Bible does not record any such information about the birth of Saul, later to be known as Paul.

3. A baby floating down a river; a daughter of a nation's ruler finding the baby; and a sister who talked the woman into allowing the baby's own mother to be his nurse maid. You may recall this story of Moses as a baby, but do you know his father's name?

Answer: Amram

The story is found in the first two chapters of Exodus. Moses' father's name was Amram, while his mother was Jochebed.

The irony of this story has long amazed me in that the Pharoah of Egypt had commanded that all male Hebrew babies under the age of two who were born in Egypt to be put to death. His daughter found Moses' little basket floating among the bulrushes and had him brought up in the Pharoah's own palace and then had him raised by his own mother, who had hidden him away to avoid having him killed Later he grew up and led the Israelites out of Egypt entirely.

4. Elkanah had two wives, Peninnah and Hannah. Peninnah bore him several children while Hannah was initially barren. Hannah fervently prayed to God and asked him for a son, and her prayer was answered. What was her son's name?

Answer: Samuel

Hannah fulfilled her promise to God by entrusting her child Samuel to the priest Eli, who nurtured him. As the prophet and judge of the nation, Samuel would anoint the nation's first two kings, Saul and David. The story is told in the opening chapters of the first book of Samuel. It has significant parallels with the birth of Jesus, especially the song that Hannah sings after Samuel is born -- accepted by many scholars as the model for Mary's Magnificat in Luke chapter 1.

5. Seven people in the Bible are recorded as having been named by God, prior to their birth. Which one of them received the name Laughter (in English), from God?

Answer: Isaac

Genesis chapter 21 tells that when Sarah was old, God told her she would have a son. When she laughed within her spirit, He asked her why she laughed. Sarah was very old when Isaac was born, about 90, so when God informed her of the pending birth she thought He must have been joking.

She denied laughing because she didn't laugh aloud, but God gently chided her and stated, 'No, but you did laugh', or words to that effect. He told her and her husband Abraham to call their son Isaac, meaning laughter. When Isaac was born, they obeyed God and gave him that name that God had chosen.

(I tend to wonder if perhaps God did that so they would always remember not to laugh when He spoke, ever again. Every time Sarah or her husband called the child by name I'm sure they were reminded not to ever laugh at God, even silently.)

6. What happened to Zechariah when he doubted the angel Gabriel's announcement that he and Elizabeth would have a son, who would be named John?

Answer: He lost his voice

When the baby was a week old, the villagers came to circumcise him. They asked Elizabeth if she was going to name the baby Zechariah, after his father. She exclaimed his name was to be John. The people asked Zechariah what he wanted to name the baby. He wrote on a writing pad, "John", and immediately he was able to speak again. The story is found in the first chapter of Luke's gospel.

7. The Bible records in Genesis 16 that because Sarai (Sarah) had not yet borne him a son, she encouraged her husband to sleep with Hagar, her Egyptian slave, so that she could have a son. What was his name?

Answer: Ishmael

Although this may seem shocking in modern society, it was an acceptable practice at the time. If a married woman was unable to have children herself, she was shamed by her peers and would be expected to give her servant to her husband in order to produce heirs. Any children thus produced would be considered heirs of the father.

Although Sarah was acting in accordance with the custom of the time, it shows lack of faith in what God had promised Abraham.

8. In Judges chapter 13 the angel of the Lord appeared to the barren wife of Manoah and assured her she would give birth to a son, who would begin rescuing Israel from the Philistines. Who was this son?

Answer: Samson

The angel told the woman be sure not to drink any wine or beer, or eat any forbidden food. After he is born never cut his hair, because from the day of his birth he will be a Nazirite and dedicated to God. The story is told in Genesis 13-16 how Samson owed his great strength to his long hair, how Delilah deceived him and cut his hair off, and as his strength returned, how he brought down the pillars of the house where he was imprisoned, killing 3000 Philistines.

Question by WhiskeyZulu
9. This mother deceived her husband Isaac and sent her younger son Jacob to receive his father's blessing, rather than his older brother Esau. Who was she?

Answer: Rebekah

Since Isaac's sight was very poor, she told Jacob to dress up as his brother Esau. Esau had a great deal of body hair, so she dressed him in furry goat-skins. By doing this Rebekah was fulfilling God's will that her womb contained two nations. Jacob was later forgiven by his father for deceiving him, and after wrestling with an angel, became known as Israel. Esau would become the father of the nation of Edom. The story is found in chapters 27-37 of the book of Genesis.

Question by WhiskeyZulu
10. The Bible mentions that Solomon was the wisest man - other than Jesus - to ever live. He was born to King David and Bathsheba. What book of the Bible is almost exclusively authored by Solomon?

Answer: Proverbs

Proverbs has 31 chapters, each chapter being one proverb. Solomon is credited with at least 28 of them; some attribute the 31st Proverb to him as well. The book of 1st Kings (4:32) says Solomon wrote 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs. What a prolific author!

Chapters 11-12 of the second book of Samuel record how David slept with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, and fathered a son by her. The writer tells that the Lord was angry with this act of adultery and the child died soon after he was born. David married Bathsheba, after arranging the death of Uriah, and Solomon was their second child.
