We got to learn more about Mr. Eko's life as he was featured in the majority of the flashbacks for this episode. Included in the first flashback was Mr. Eko's childhood where he grew up amongst violence and was forced to kill a young boy. Mr. Eko's life was characterized by constant crime from him and those around him.

In the first scene on the island, Mr. Eko was seen carving a bunch of words on an object and Claire noticed him nearby so she went to talk to him. She asked him what he was writing and he softly responded how he wrote down things he needed to remember. Claire asked Mr. Eko if she could sit down next to him and he told her she could and Claire introduced him to her son, Aaron.

We first saw Locke during the opening credits fixing a door in the hatch and Michael saw him and asked if he was breaking in or out. Locke went off topic and started discussing films and how he enjoyed the silent ones. Michael asked Locke if he was setting a combination to the door and Locke replied that he was since the door was to a room with the guns. Locke did not want just anyone wandering into that room.

Michael began to have a conversation with Walt again but Jack interrupted him. Jack was completely oblivious to Walt being on the other end of the computer conversation.

Mr. Eko stared down the smoke and we saw how it contained flashbacks of Mr. Eko's past.
