Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wizards were a common sight in Ankh-Morpork. Where in the city did many wizards live and work?

Answer: Unseen University

Unseen University (first mentioned in 'The Colour of Magic') was the place where young men went to learn magic. A number of Discworld books featured university staff, students, and alumni (the names Mustrum Ridcully, Simon, and Rincewind might ring some bells). Although wizards had the potential to be very powerful, there was an agreement between the university and the Patrician that wizards would not get involved in politics, and the Patrician would never ask them to.

Females were generally not admitted to Unseen University. There was a view that wizard magic was for men and witch magic was for women. In 'Equal Rites', Granny Weatherwax summed up her view of wizard magic: "'Men's minds work different from ours, see. Their magic's all numbers and angles and edges and what the stars are doing, as if that really mattered. It's all power. It's all-' Granny paused, and dredged up her favourite word to describe all she despised in wizardry, '-jommetry.'" Her view seems sexist, but Eskarina Smith set a precedent for magic women later in the novel.
2. All dwarfs on the Discworld had beards. In their culture, pronouns and clothes were not specific to a gender. Traditionally, a dwarf would only reveal their gender when a courtship became serious. Which member of the City Watch was an openly female dwarf?

Answer: Cheery Littlebottom

Cheery Littlebottom started her career as an alchemist but joined the City Watch as a forensics expert ('Feet of Clay'). She caused a stir among her race when she openly declared that she was female - most dwarfs only revealed that information to their closest family members and... companions. She began to wear a skirt and introduced female pronouns to the dwarfish language.

The Watch was not always as inclusive. Until it came under the command of Sam Vimes, all watchmen were just that: men. During the time period in which most of the books were set, the Watch was recruiting female officers as well as people from ethnic minorities.
3. Detritus lived in Ankh-Morpork and worked as a bouncer and hired muscle before joining the City Watch. Brick, Chrysoprase, Mr Shine, and Old Grandad were also members of the same species. What was Detritus?

Answer: A troll

Trolls were creatures made of living rock. They were typically very strong but quite unintelligent, especially during the day or in warm temperatures. Traditionally, trolls and dwarfs were enemies. That's what happens when a race made of rocks meets a race whose culture is centred around mining.

Some members of each species did get along, however. Detritus was friends with some of his dwarf colleagues in the Watch, for example.
4. Angua first appeared in 'Men at Arms'. Which statement was true of Angua von Uberwald?

Answer: She had a strong sense of smell.

As her name suggested, Angua was a descendant of a noble family from the wintry, mountainous region of the Discworld called Uberwald. She ran away from home and went from place to place until she finally settled in Ankh-Morpork. Angua joined the Watch as part of a recruitment drive to hire more people from ethnic minorities ('Men at Arms').

She proved immensely helpful when tracking criminals due to her incredible sense of smell. You wouldn't expect anything less from a werewolf.
5. There was a large family from Uberwald who specialised in surgical skills. They were often employed as servants or assistants to mad scientists, though the ones in Ankh-Morpork had started to branch out more. What was the name of all of the male members of this family?

Answer: Igor

Igors were quite common in Uberwald, but some of them had relocated to Ankh-Morpork. There was an Igor working in a hospital ('Unseen Academicals'), one working for the clock-maker Jeremy Clockson ('Thief of Time'), and one in the City Watch ('The Fifth Elephant'), to name a few. Igors were incredibly good at surgery.

They kept the body parts of their relatives in case they ever needed to replace one of their own. But Igors didn't just perform surgery on themselves. The Igor in the Watch was hired to tend to injured officers; however, someone had to ensure the patient didn't receive an unexpected 'upgrade'.
6. Which of these people was a vampire working as an iconographer for a newspaper in 'The Truth'?

Answer: Otto Chriek

Otto Chriek moved from Uberwald to Ankh-Morpork. He was interested in iconography, so in 'The Truth' he began working for William de Worde's newspaper. Many vampires in the city - including Otto Chriek - were members of the League of Temperance. They were B-total, meaning that they refused to drink blood and wore a black ribbon to show that they had made the pledge. Other notable Discworld black ribboners were Lady Margolotta and Sally von Humpeding.

Otto Chriek had a small problem with iconography: the flash kept causing him to turn to dust.
7. Which Discworld species was known for having grey or green skin, a rotten smell, and a life after death?

Answer: Zombies

On the Discworld, there were a few different ways someone could become a zombie. Some zombies were the result of magic, but at least one person became undead when Death did not appear to collect their soul.

In Ankh-Morpork, Mr Slant was a zombie and also head of the Guild of Lawyers. Reg Shoe was a member of the Watch after he died during the Glorious Revolution in 'Night Watch'. Mr Bendy worked for a newspaper in 'The Truth'. Fittingly, he wrote the obituaries.
8. Which creatures were made of stone and could be found sitting on top of buildings around Ankh-Morpork?

Answer: Gargoyles

There were ornamental gargoyles around the rooftops of Unseen University. When it rained they went and hid in the attic, believing that 'just because you were ugly didn't mean you were stupid' ('Equal Rites'). Gargoyles weren't just restricted to the university, though. They lived on buildings across the city and were often used for surveillance by the Watch ('Feet of Clay' and 'The Truth').

Gargoyles, like trolls, were made of rock and stone. They could move around and the ones with wings could also fly. They preferred to be high up on buildings, but sometimes - if necessary - they would go down to the ground.
9. Buggy Swires was a member of the City Watch in 'Jingo', 'The Fifth Elephant', and 'Night Watch'. Given his species, roughly how tall was he?

Answer: He was six inches tall.

A gnome called Swires appeared in 'The Light Fantastic'. He, like all gnomes, was six inches tall. Buggy Swires was also a gnome (possibly the same one, the books don't say). He lived in Ankh-Morpork and became an officer in the Watch in 'Jingo'. Because of his size, he formed an airborne division and was able to ride on the back of birds during surveillance operations and traffic control.
10. Granny Weatherwax moved to Ankh-Morpork for a short while. What was special about Granny Weatherwax?

Answer: She was a witch.

When Granny Weatherwax arrived in Ankh-Morpork ('Equal Rites') she found a vacancy in the witch market. She sent Eskarina Smith to work as a cleaner in Unseen University until they accepted her as a student. Meanwhile, Granny did 'witch' things, often for Mrs Whitlow was the housekeeper at the university.

Mrs Whitlow liked to have her tea leaves read. According to Granny Weatherwax, that was a load of rubbish... but the witch made things up for her any way. Granny could also ride a broomstick - reluctantly - and could Borrow the minds of animals.
