Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What caused Clay Regazzoni's horrific crash at Long Beach in 1980?

Answer: Brake pedal breakage.

It was his brake pedal that failed, at the end of the long stretch sending him crashing into the abandoned Brabham of Riccardo Zunino. Very sad ending of a somewhat good driver's career. He survived after this accident, but permanently paralysed.
2. In what Grand-Prix was Riccardo Patrese struck in the rear while stalled on the dummy grid?

Answer: Belgian Grand Prix (Zolder)

Incredibly, it was his own teammate that crashed into him! Patrese stalled on the grid, then Stohr, driving the sister car rear ended the other Arrows.
3. Who was on pole-position for the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix?

Answer: Andrea De Cesaris

He planted the very competitive Alfa Romeo 182 on pole. It was the only time this happened, but De Cesaris had a good 1982 season, driving well. He almost won at Monaco, but ran out of fuel on the last lap while in the lead!
4. What was the name of the mechanic who got both legs crushed between the two Arrows in the 1981 Belgian Grand-Prix?

Answer: Dave Luckett

He was trying to restart Patrese's Arrows when his teammate slammed in the back, crushing both legs. Fortunately, Dave fully recovered from this incident.
5. Jean-Pierre Jabouille won the 1980 Austrian Grand-Prix. Who came in a close second?

Answer: Alan Jones

Jabouille used minimal effort to hold back Jones, who was on a charge. Jabouille had blistered all four tires, but still managed to hold on to his lead. This race demonstrated Jabouille's true calibre. He was a very unlucky driver, but had excellent racecraft.
6. Why did both Ligiers suffer from tire failure in the 1980 British G.P?

Answer: wheel rim failure

The Gotti wheel company provided team Ligier with 15 inch for this race. The wheels proved to be unreliable. They cracked during the race causing punctures to both cars.
7. Who qualified a unbelievable 4th place at Long Beach in the 1980 G.P.?

Answer: Jan Lammers

Lammers incredibly achieved this in the sluggish A.T.S! In the race, it was all over for him before the first lap, a drive shaft packed up.
8. In 1981, Jean-Pierre Jabouille retired from the Grand-Prix scene. For what team was he driving at the time?

Answer: Talbot Ligier Gitanes

Severely injuring both legs during the 1980 Canadian G.P., he signed for the Ligier team in '81. But at the start of the '81 season, he soon realised that he had lost his edge. The accident knocked the stuffing out of him, and he wisely retired soon after.
9. In 1980, in which G.P. did Jody Scheckter fail to qualify?

Answer: Canadian G.P.

Having been world champion the previous year, he was unable to qualify the uncompetitive Ferrari 312t5 on the grid. Jody was to retire from Grand-Prix racing at the end of the 1980 season.
10. Who was on pole for the 1980 U.S Grand Prix at Watkins Glen?

Answer: Bruno Giacomelli

Bruno achieved this in the competitive Alfa Romeo 179. He was leading the race but retired on lap 31, his electrics packing up. Alan Jones went on to victory.
