Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1989 Australian G.P. was the last race for Rene Arnoux before retirement. At the drivers' briefing, what special thing did he do?

Answer: He gave a leather wallet to every driver.

He personally gave to every driver present a leather wallet. Towards the end of his driving career, he did not make many friends on the track, being road-blocking and unyielding to quicker drivers. But this going away gesture proved that the man was sensitive and caring.
2. In the 1989 Hungarian G.P., Nigel Mansell overtook Ayrton Senna in a bold move and won the race. Which driver blocked Senna, and allowed Mansell to nip through?

Answer: Stefan Johansson

When Senna and Mansell, who were running 1 and 2 came up to Johansson driving the Onyx Ford, Stefan hesitated for a split second, and momentarily boxed in Senna. Mansell was following Senna closely, didn't slow and zipped through. It was a fabulous move, and Senna had to content himself with second place.
3. In the 1982 season, Keke Rosberg became world champion. How many races did he win that year?

Answer: 1

Incredibly, he won the crown with just one race, the Swiss G.P. at Dijon. He managed to be world champ by being consistent in the races, almost always racking up points. 1982 was one of the blackest Formula 1 season in history. Two deaths (Gilles Villeneuve and Paletti), 11 different race winners, and a drivers' strike at the beginning of the year.
4. In the 1986 British G.P., Derek Warwick drove the Brabham BMW BT 55. What car did his teammate, Riccardo Patrese drive that weekend?

Answer: Brabham BMW BT 54

In a vain effort to solve the problematic BT 55, the Brabham team dragged out of the Donington museum, the previous year's car, the BT 54. The journey lasted only for two races, and was promptly reinstated back where it belonged!
5. Which driver won the last turbo race in the twentieth century at the 1988 Australian G.P.?

Answer: Alain Prost

Prost didn't win that year's championship, but at least had the honor of being the last turbo winner. The turbo era was to my advice, the most thrilling period of them all. All that belongs to the past, and today, we must content ourselves with much less competitive races than back then.
6. Didier Pironi had a terrible crash during free practice for the 1982 German G.P. Who was the driver he collided with?

Answer: Alain Prost

Pironi was turning very quickly in a rain soaked practice session. He was following closely one car, then decided to overtake and there was Prost in a Renault lapping slowly. The collision was inevitable. Pironi almost lost his life, and that crash virtually ended his auto racing career. He tried a Ligier a couple of years after, but no more.
7. After his first retirement, Alan Jones made two comebacks: in 1983 and 1986 with two different teams. Name these two teams.

Answer: Arrows and Team Haas

Two comebacks that turned out to be wrong choices. He was uncompetitive, and the cars were not much better.
8. At the 1982 French G.P., the podium celebrations were special for two reasons, name them.

Answer: Unrespected team orders from Arnoux, and 100% French driver podium.

The Renault team ordered Arnoux to let Prost by and win the race, but Rene decided otherwise. A cold breeze covered the two Renault drivers for the remainder of the season. And with Pironi finishing 3rd, it was a historical French G.P.
9. Who won the inaugural Australian G.P in Adelaide in 1985?

Answer: Keke Rosberg

It was the old street fighter himself, Rosberg. He was the last show driver to compete in F-1. An all out driver with spectacular style and forcefull driving. He respected others and was always fair in battle. Truly missed, he was made of the same mold as Gilles Villeneuve.
10. The 1982 Canadian G.P.: Piquet wins. Name the 2nd and 3rd place drivers.

Answer: Patrese and Watson

Very black 1982 Canadian G.P. Start line drama as Paletti rammed the stalled Ferrari of Pironi. There was a two hour delay, and the race finished close to 6 o'clock that day. I was at that race. First win for B.M.W. who powered Piquet in the Brabham. Gilles Villeneuve's father, Seville was on the podium that day.
