Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After six years of struggle, the Benetton clothing group acquired the Toleman team and renamed the team Benetton. What engine did the team use in 1986?

Answer: BMW

After using the unfancied Hart engine for the best part of five years, Benetton dumped the underpowered machines for the latest batch of BMWs. And the team put them to good effect, with their driver Gerhard Berger winning in Mexico City and putting in several other good drives. Although the engines did have a habit of blowing up, particularly in qualifying...
2. Joining the Williams-Honda team from Brabham, Nelson Piquet won his debut race for the team in Brazil.

Answer: True

Signed on a massive retainer, Piquet qualified second at Jacarapagua and after a first-lap incident eliminated teammate Nigel Mansell and slowed up Ayrton Senna, Piquet set fastest lap and won the race comfortably.
3. At the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell shared the closest finish in grand prix history. Who finished third?

Answer: Alain Prost

Senna and Mansell were in a class of their own at Jerez, while as usual there were plenty of retirements. Alain Prost did his usual trick of surviving the carnage to finish third, with teammate Rosberg fourth.
4. Both Lotus cars had retired by lap 11 of the San Marino Grand Prix with what problem?

Answer: Wheel bearing failure

Johnny Dumfries retired on lap 8 with wheel bearing failure with teammate Senna retiring three laps later with the same problem.
5. Four teams had cars that failed to qualify at Monaco. Which team had both cars qualify?

Answer: Haas Lola

Both Minardis and both Osellas failed to qualify, no surprise there. Dumfries in his Lotus also failed to qualify along with Huub Rothergatter in his Zakspeed. Both Haas Lolas made the grid, Patrick Tambay qualifying a sensational 8th and Alan Jones in 18th out of 20 cars.
6. Formula One was rocked by tragedy on May 14th with the tragic death of Elio de Angelis during a testing accident at which circuit?

Answer: Paul Ricard

The death of the popular de Angelis cast a huge shadow over the paddock at the Belgian Grand Prix. De Angelis had been testing when a rear-wing failure sent his Brabham cart-wheeling down the circuit, eventually vaulting the guardrail and coming to rest upside-down. Sadly, Elio died in hospital the next day from massive internal injuries and significant brain damage.
7. Nigel Mansell won his first grand prix of the season at Spa-Francorchamps after overtaking which driver on lap 23?

Answer: Stefan Johansson

Piquet led the first 16 laps of the race before the pitstops. Senna then led for five laps before Johansson took the lead, but Mansell was soon past the Swede and won easily from Senna and Johansson.
8. Mansell dominated the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, taking pole position and winning by 20 seconds. How many laps did he lead in total?

Answer: 54 laps

Mansell led nearly the entire race and only lost the lead during the pitstops, first time to Rosberg and the second to Prost.
9. Ligier were enjoying a mini-renaissance in 1986 with some superb performances. Where did Jacques Laffite finish at Detroit?

Answer: 2nd

Qualifying in sixth (teammate Rene Arnoux 4th), Laffite slowly worked his way to the front, and after teammate Arnoux led three laps, Laffite took the lead for 13 laps before being overtaken by Piquet. Laffite eventually finished second to Senna.
10. How many cars were classified at the end of the British Grand Prix?

Answer: 9

Nigel Mansell won a jam-packed British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch that saw a startline accident (which ended with Laffite suffering broken legs), a re-start and then a titanic battle between Mansell and Piquet, the Englishmen winning out in the end. Jonathan Palmer in the Zakspeed was the final finisher, 6 laps down.
11. Keke Rosberg came close to winning the German Grand Prix, leading 20 laps in total before running out of fuel on the final lap. Where was he classified?

Answer: 5th

Qualifying on pole position, Rosberg had his best race of the season so far, duelling with nearly everyone on the grid at one stage. The Finn was looking good for at least second place after losing the lead on lap 38 but ran out of fuel on the final lap, dropping to 5th.
12. The first ever Grand Prix behind the old 'Iron Curtain' was held in Hungary in 1986. Who won the race?

Answer: Nelson Piquet

Senna took pole position, and he and Piquet were involved in a race-long scrap for the win, Piquet passing Senna on the outside of turn one on lap 57 to take the victory.
13. Who took pole for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Osterreichring?

Answer: Teo Fabi

No surprise to see the Benetton-BMW on pole a power circuit like the Osterreichring, with teammate Gerhard Berger also on the front row. But it all went wrong for the team during the race, Fabi retiring on lap 17 with a blown engine while Berger finished 3 laps down in 7th after battery problems.
14. Who was second on the grid at the Italian Grand Prix?

Answer: Alain Prost

Prost managing to put his McLaren-Porsche second, next to Teo Fabi, and ahead of the likes of Berger, Mansell and Piquet, which was quite a surprise on this horsepower circuit. However, it all went pear-shaped for both front-row cars as both stalled their cars - Prost was later disqualified for changing cars too late.

Answer: True

Mansell qualified second behind Senna but took the lead at the start and was never headed, setting fastest lap in the process.

Williams-Honda, Ligier-Renault, Arrows-Megatron and Minardi-Motori Moderni had both cars make it to the chequered flag. Only one team - Haas Lola - had both cars retire.
17. One of the most infamous images of 1986 was Mansell's right rear tyre blow-out that cost him the championship. On what lap of the Australian Grand Prix did it occur?

Answer: Lap 63

Mansell was looking set for his first world championship, sitting in fourth place behind Alain Prost but that would have been sufficient to take the title. That tyre blow-out changed everything, as Piquet pitted for new rubber and Alain Prost was left to win the race and the title.
