Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which driver replaced Carlos Reutemann at Williams for the 3rd round at Long Beach?

Answer: Mario Andretti

Andretti replaced the veteran Argentitian for one race before Derek Daly took over in the FW08 from Zolder. Andretti wasn't happy with the Williams car around the street circuit and went back to Champ cars before making a final return to F1 for Ferrari later in the year.
2. Who effectively took over as head of engineering at Williams for the season while Patrick Head was preoccupied with the Metro 6R4 rally programme?

Answer: Frank Dernie

Frank Dernie worked well with Rosberg and helped the Finn to perform consistently over the season -- six podiums in 16 races, and the driver's championship.
3. Which Formula Atlantic driver was called upon to replace Nigel Mansell at Lotus, after the Englishman injured his wrist in a crash at Canada?

Answer: Roberto Moreno

Colin Chapman took a punt on the un-prepared 23 year old Brazilian for the seat at Zandvoort. It took a while for Moreno to recover his reputation after he failed to qualify.
4. Which driver lead the most laps over the 1982 season?

Answer: Alain Prost

The professor lead the most laps with 289. Lauda lead the third most with 128, then Piquet and Pironi with 105 and 80 respectively. Arnoux was second with 205 laps in the lead.
5. What new feature did Lotus employ for the first time in 1982, with the type 91?

Answer: Full carbon fibre monocoque chassis

After having his revolutionary 'twin chassis' type 88 car banned the year before, Colin Chapman pressed on with the more conventional 91 but utilising carbon fibre for the whole chassis. It used a carbon fibre / kevlar / nomex sandwich throughout. The 91 was the second F1 car to race with a full carbon fibre tub after the Mclaren MP4/1 pioneered it the year before.
6. Why did Brabham aim to introduce mid race re-fuelling at the British GP?

Answer: To enable them to run a softer tyre

Brabham had beer barrels full of fuel for their new BMW turbo cars at Brands Hatch so the cars could be sent to the grid with a lighter fuel load. This enabled them to run the softer Goodyear tyre. When eventually one of the cars made it as far as the mid race pit stop in Austria, Patrese pitted from the lead and resumed still ahead.
7. Rosberg only scored one win on his way to the title, but how many pole positions did he achieve during the season?

Answer: 1

In a season where qualifying was dominated by the turbo Renaults, Rosberg scored his only pole at Britain's Brands Hatch. He put in a brilliant lap in the Williams that eclipsed anything the turbo cars could conjure. The only other non turbo car to be on pole that year was Andrea de Cesaris Alfa Romeo 182 at Long Beach.
8. What did Ferrari introduce on their 126C2 car in 1982?

Answer: Water injection

Ferrari and fuel supplier Agip introduced water injection during the 1982 season. This involved injecting water molecules into the fuel both to cool it and, in combustion, to better spread the explosion. This resulted in significantly more power.
9. Who designed the Ferrari 126C2, regarded as the first 'modern' Ferrari in F1 circles?

Answer: Harvey Postlethwaite

Harvey Postlethwaite oversaw Ferrari's first proper monocoque, combining an aluminium / honeycomb design with carbon fibre front and rear bulkheads. The changes brought in by Postlethwaite played a big part in bringing Ferrari into the age when the chassis and aerodynamics mattered as much as the engine.
10. What engines did Equipe Talbot Gitanes run for the year?

Answer: Matra 3.0 v12

Ligier stuck with the powerful French unit for a second year.
