Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which driver started the most races from pole position in the 1984 season?

Answer: Nelson Piquet

He nailed nine poles that season in the powerful Brabham BT53 BMW. That season, Vespa, the Italian scooter company awarded a new scooter to the pole sitter of each race, so Piquet had a garage full of two-wheelers.
2. For what reason did Nelson Piquet suffer severe pain in his right foot during the Canadian Grand Prix?

Answer: Oil cooler located in the front nose

Brabham installed an oil cooler directly in front of the pedals, so it generated great amounts of heat in a already hot weathered race. Piquet started feeling heat early in the race, and was screaming with pain, but he kept on going to win the race. He was on the podium with one boot off to cool down that foot.
3. Why was the British Grand-Prix red flagged on lap 11 in 1984?

Answer: Palmer's accident at Clearways

Jonathan Palmer's RAM suffered steering breakage, and had a massive accident, but the doctor was unhurt.
4. In 1984, Jo Gartner raced for Osella, and two years later, he finished in second place at the 24 hours of LeMans.

Answer: False

Actually, the Austrian driver who had almost no success in Formula One, was to lose his life at LeMans in 1986.
5. At Dallas, Patrick Tambay did something illegal during the race. What was it?

Answer: Drove for a short distance in the opposite direction

Around 1/4 distance, Tambay clipped the wall with his right rear wheel and spun. He saw an escape area and decided to reach it, but had to go in the opposite direction to do that in a blind corner. Keke Rosberg said that it was one of the stupidest moves that he ever saw.
6. At Dallas in the 1984 season, how many drivers hit the wall and retired during the race?

Answer: 13

An incredible race, and no less than 13 drivers hit the wall for all sorts of reasons, including Lauda, Prost, Boutsen, Alboreto, Surer, Piquet(throttle jammed open), Tambay, Cecotto, de Cesaris, Patrese, Bellof, Cheever, and Hesnault. It was a curious race.
7. Which driver had a horrible accident during qualifying at Monaco?

Answer: Martin Brundle

Comming into Tabac corner at Monaco on his final lap of qualifiers, Brundle snagged the throttle as he dabbed the brakes. In an instant, the Tyrrell had slammed into the barrier at over 100 mph, the impact turning the car on its side. Brundle was shaken but not injured.
8. Who set the fastest race lap in the 1984 European Grand Prix?

Answer: Nelson Piquet and Michele Alboreto

Incredible but true. Both Piquet and Alboreto set their fastest lap on the same lap, on the 62nd lap of the race.
9. Which driver replaced Teo Fabi in the Brabham at the Portuguese Grand Prix?

Answer: Manfred Winkelhock

Teo Fabi had to leave on the Thursday before the race when the sad news of his father's death was communicated to him that night.
10. Which driver replaced Stefan Bellof at Tyrrell for the 1984 German Grand Prix?

Answer: Mike Thackwell

Stefan Bellof had to attend a sportscar race at Mosport Canada, so he filled in but failed to qualify.
