1. How many teams competed in the 2009 season?

Answer: 16

These included teams from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, North Queensland, Gold Coast, Newcastle and New Zealand.

The NRL comp had 14 teams in 2001, which was increasd to 15 teams with the re-admission of South Sydney in 2002 (they were expelled at the end of the 1999 season), and then became a 16 team competition in 2007 upon the admission of Gold Coats Titans.
2. How many teams made the finals?

Answer: 8

The final eight system had been in operation since 1995, when the competition (then know as the ARL) expanded from 16 teams (with a 6-team finals series) to 20 teams, upon the admission of the Auckland Warriors, South Queensland, North Queensland and Western Reds.
3. Which team finished on top of the table as minor premiers?

Answer: St George-Illawarra Dragons

The season up to the finals consisted of 26 rounds, where each team played 9 opponenets twice, 15 once, with 2 byes.
4. Which of these four team made the end-of-season finals?

Answer: Newcastle Knights

The finalists were St George-Illawarra, Canterbury-Bankstown, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Manly-Warringah, Brisbane, Newcastle and Parramatta.
5. Which team finished in eighth position?

Answer: Parramatta Eels

The finishing order was St George, Canterbury-Bankstown, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Manly-Warringah, Brisbane, Newcastle and Parramatta.
6. What was the result of the 2009 State of Origin series between New South Wales and Queensland?

Answer: Queensland 2-1

After winning the first two matches, played in Melbourne and Sydney, Queensland surprisingly lost the third at home in Brisbane (it was a dead rubber). This was enough to give them a record-breaking fourth-consecutive Series win (neither state had ever won more than three consecutive series):
Queensland: 1982-83-84 and 1986-87-88.
New South Wales : 1992-93-94 and 2004-04-05.
7. Which were the first two teams eliminated in the finals series?

Answer: Newcastle Knights and Manly-Warringah

In Week One of the finals series the tow lowest placed losers were eliminated, Newcastle and Manly:
4th vs. 5th : Melbourne defeated Manly
3rd vs. 6th : Gold Coast lost to Brisbane
2nd vs. 7th : Canterbury defeated Newcastle
1st vs. 8th : St George lost to Parramatta

Manly-Warringah were 2008 Champions.
8. Which two teams played the Grand Final?

Answer: Melbourne and Parramatta

Melbourne Storm defeated Brisbane Broncos, and Parramatta Eels defeated Canterbury Bulldogs, in the two qualifying finals.
9. What was the Grand Final result?

Answer: Melbourne 23-16

Melbourne led 10-0 at half-time, and led 22-16 with less than 5 minutes to go. A Greg Inglis field goal put the result beyond doubt.
10. Who was Man-of-the-Match (Clive Churchill Medal winner) in the Grand Final?

Answer: Billy Slater

The match was billed as a match-up between Billy Slater and Jarryd Hayne.
