Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was inducted into the Hall of Fame, in the 2nd year of Hall of Fame inductions. I did not retire from baseball until 1950. I played 11 seasons and had a career average of .245. I went to 9 World Series in my career. Who am I?

Answer: Connie Mack

Mack played ball from 1886-1896 with the Washington Nationals, Buffalo Bisons, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a player-manager for the Pirates in his 3 seasons with them. After that in 1901, he began a 50 year managing streak with the Philadelphia Athletics. All World Series appearances were as a manager, as there was no World Series prior to 1903.
2. How many 2002 Detroit Tigers, hit 25 or more home runs in the season?

Answer: 0

Not even 20. Designated Hitter Randall Simon led the last place team with 19. No Tiger hit 20 in the 2001 season either.
3. Rickey Henderson had gone through more suitcases than any other player in the 20th century. What team did he start his career with?

Answer: Oakland

Henderson never played for the other teams listed. In 1979, he began his career in an Athletic uniform. 3 of his 6 Oakland seasons, he reached the 100 stolen base mark. Rickey then went to the Yankees, then back to Oakland. From there it was Toronto, Oakland again, the Padres, the Angels, back to Oakland again, then the Mets, then the Mariners, then the Padres again, then the Boston Red Sox.

In 2003, Rickey entered his 25th season.
4. Who was the only born Italian in the 20th century to hit a home run?

Answer: Reno Bertoia

None of the others listed were Italian. There were only 5 Italian born players in all the 20th century. They were Rugger Ardizoia, Hank Biasatti, Julio Bonetti, Marino Pieretti, and Bertoia. Bertoia was the only Italian to hit the big one, as he hit 27 of them in 10 seasons, with 3 franchises from 1953-1962.
5. Which of the following did NOT play their entire career with one team?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays played for the Giants franchise of New York and San Francisco, and retired as a New York Met in 1973. Dickey was a Yankee catcher, Kaline a Tiger outfielder, and the great Brooks Robinson was an Oriole third baseman.
6. Who was the first recipient of a World Series MVP Award in 1955?

Answer: Johnny Podres

None of the others listed played in 1955. The 4 listed were Dodgers and Yankees. Podres and the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Yankees 4 games to 2 in the Series. Podres had 2 victories, allowing only 2 earned runs, and struck out 10 New York batters.
7. The Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966 from Milwaukee. Before the team was the Milwaukee Braves in 1953, what were they called?

Answer: Boston Braves

Other than Boston, only the Browns existed, and they became the Baltimore Orioles. The Braves moved the club after the 1952 season from Boston. Their franchise began in 1876 with the name of the Red Caps. In 1877 and 1878, the Red Caps won the National League pennant, with only 6 teams in the league.
8. What team began playing their home games at Cinergy Field in 1997?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

The Reds played at Riverfront Stadium since 1970, before playing in the park named Cinergy Field in 1997.
9. How many times did Ty Cobb steal 100 bases in a season?

Answer: 0

Cobb set a record for stolen bases in a season, which stood for almost 50 years, but he never reached the 100 mark. In 1915, the Detroit Tiger stole 96 bases. In 1962, Dodgers speedster Maury Wills broke the mark with 104. Cobb retired with 892 thefts, while Wills stole 586 in his career.
10. Don Larsen was the first pitcher in baseball history to throw a World Series perfect game. With what team did he throw it for?

Answer: Yankees

None of the other teams listed, saw Larsen in their uniform. Don won 1 game in the 1956 World Series against the Dodgers, and made it count in game 5, as he perfected one against the Dodgers 2-0. The Yankees won the Series 4 games to 3, with the help of Yogi Berra's 10 RBI's.
