Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in history to hit 50 home runs, in four consecutive seasons?

Answer: Mark McGwire

Mark hit 56 in 1996 with the A's. Then he straddled the 1997 season with the A's, and then joined the Cardinals. His season total was 58. The following seasons he hit 70, then 65. In 1997, he also was the first player to hit the most home runs in a season, but not lead a league. He had 34 with the A's and 24 with the Cardinals.
2. In 1996, which Oriole player set a record for hitting 12 lead-off game home runs in the season?

Answer: Brady Anderson

The others never played for the Orioles. Anderson hit 50 home runs in 1996, second to Mark McGwire's 52 of the Athletics. Anderson retired in 2002 after 15 seasons, with 210 home runs.
3. Which team was the last to reach 20 wins in the 2004 season?

Answer: Montreal Expos

The Detroit Tigers were happy in 2004, helping to erase two prior dismal seasons. With the others listed winning almost 20 games more than Montreal, the Expos won their 20th. With a record of 20-45 when they reached 20 wins, the Expos were already 15 games behind the Division leader Marlins.
4. 1956 saw a perfect game in the World Series. Don Larsen's arm went perfecto against the Dodgers. Which Dodger was the losing pitcher?

Answer: Sal Maglie

None of the others ever pitched or played with Dodgers. On October 8 (Yogi Berra's number), the Yankees beat the Dodgers 2-0, with one run coming from a Mickey Mantle's blast in the fourth inning. Maglie was no slouch at he threw a five-hitter for the losing Dodgers. The Yankees won the Series four games to three, after dishing up an embarrassing 9-0 shutout in game seven.
5. In the 1960 World Series, which player had six RBIs in one game?

Answer: Bobby Richardson

The others had not started their MLB careers for another 10 years yet. The Yankee's Richardson hit 6 RBIs in game three of the 1960 World Series. The 1960 World Series held a historical event, as Pirate Bill Mazeroski hit a bottom of the ninth inning home run to win the Series for Pittsburgh, four games to three. Richardson however, was the Series MVP for his .367 average, one home run, and 12 RBIs.
6. Which of the following led the National League in home runs and triples in the same season?

Answer: Willie Mays

Kaline, Yaz, and DiMaggio, spent their entire career in the American League with the Tigers, Red Sox, and Yankees, respectively. The 'Say Hey Kid' followed up his 1954 MVP season, by hitting 51 home runs and 13 triples in 1955. Mays of the Giants, was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1979.
7. Eddie Gaedel left baseball with a career batting average of exactly what?

Answer: .000

The 3'7" pinch hitter for the St. Louis Browns in 1951, appeared in his only at-bat. He walked on four pitches.
8. Who was the first "Robinson" inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame?

Answer: Wilbert

Although all Hall of Fame greats, Wilbert was inducted into the Hall in 1945, 17 years in front of Jackie. He played for 17 seasons, mostly for the Baltimore Orioles of the National League, and retired as a player in 1902. Robinson also managed the Brooklyn Dodgers for 18 seasons with two National League crowns, retiring from that in 1931.

He died in 1934. Frank was inducted in 1982, and Brooks in 1983.
9. Which manager set a record for managing 53 seasons?

Answer: Connie Mack

Mack was famous for managing the Philadelphia Athletics from 1901-1950. He also managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1894-1896, but was fired for not even getting a fifth place finish. He was replaced by Patsy Donovan. Mack took the Athletics to nine World Series and won five, the last coming in 1930, 20 years before his retirement.
10. Who was the first Major League pitcher in 2004, to reach 100 strikeouts?

Answer: Randy Johnson

The other pitching greats retired prior to the 2004 season. At the time Randy of the Diamondbacks had accumulated 113 K's, there was no other pitcher to have reached the 100 plateau yet. Johnson threw MLB's 17th perfect game, during the 2004 season.
