Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player in 1996, was the first shortstop in 52 years to win a batting title?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

None of the others were shortstops. Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners won the batting title by hitting .358. He was runner-up to the MVP behind future Texas Ranger teammate Juan Gonzalez. In 1944, Lou Boudreau of the Cleveland Indians was the last shortstop to lead the league with a .327 batting average.
2. Who was the first black player to lead a league in batting average?

Answer: Jackie Robinson

The others did not have the proper credentials for this one. Robinson, in his third season in the Majors, led the National League for the Dodgers in 1949, with a .342 average. He retired after 10 seasons with a .311 career average. Tony Oliva was the first black American League batter to lead his league, in 1964 with the Twins.
3. Which National League team was the first in history to be skunked in two World Series?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The Dodgers were the only other National League listed. The Cubs made numerous World Series appearances up until 1945. They were skunked by the New York Yankees in both Series, 1932 and 1938, respectively. From 1901-1945, the Cubs appeared in 10 World Series. They then began a drought to the end of the century.
4. What did the Cincinnati Reds do in the 2000 season, that was a first in baseball?

Answer: Were never shutout in the season

For the first time in baseball's 162 game seasons, the Reds went the entire season without being shutout. An amazing accomplishment in itself, as the Reds had only one player hit over 90 RBIs in the season.
5. Ray Chapman was the first to die as a result of being hit by a pitch. In which year did this happen?

Answer: 1920

Chapman of the Indians was hit in the head from a pitch thrown by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. This unfortunate beaning took place on August 16 in a game at the Polo Grounds in New York. Strangely enough, it was a submarine pitch.
6. Who was the first Designated Hitter in a World Series game in 1976?

Answer: Dan Driessen

The others were former Chicago Cubs, and all retired before the '76 season. The Cubs had not seen a World Series game for 25 years either side of 1976. Driessen of the Cincinnati Reds, batted .357 as DH in the Series to help the Reds skunk the Yankees, four games to none.
7. Which two teams played the first American League game in 1901?

Answer: Chicago White Sox / Cleveland Blues

None of the other teams existed in 1901. There were four games scheduled on the inaugural day, but three games were rained out. That left the Chicago White Sox to play the Cleveland Blues (later Indians). The game was played at the Chicago Cricket Club. The White Sox won the game, and later the American League pennant in 1901.
8. What did Mickey Mantle do in 1957, for the first time in American League history?

Answer: First switch hitter to hit for the cycle

Only two players had accomplished this in the entire 20th century. Max Carey of Pittsburgh did it in June of 1925. It took an American League player 52 years to duplicate hitting for the cycle. Mantle hit his cycle on May 23, 1957, for the Yankees.
9. Who was the first relief pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in 1974?

Answer: Mike Marshall

All were pitching greats, none were relievers, and all retired before 1956. The inaugural award was presented to Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe in 1956. It would not be until 1974 where the first relief pitcher received it. Mike Marshall of the Dodgers, beat out fellow Dodger Andy Messersmith for the award. Marshall was 15-12 with 21 saves in the season.
10. Who was the first and only player in the 20th century to hit 30+ triples in a season, which was accomplished in 1912?

Answer: Chief Wilson

Of the others listed, their Fathers probably weren't born yet when John Owen "Chief" Wilson did this. In 1912, in his fifth season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, this speedster hit an amazing 36 triples in the season, a feat never duplicated in the century. Wilson also hit .300 in the season, but only stole 16 bases.
