Answer: Bobby Thomson

The home run completed a remarkable comeback by the Giants. At the time, Major League Baseball was only divided by the American and National Leagues. There were no divisions within each league. There were eight teams in each league. Only the league winners made the playoffs.

The Giants were 13 games behind the Dodgers as of August 11, but won 37 of their last 44 games. The two teams tied with the same record so they had a three game series to determine the winner of the pennant. Waiting on deck to bat after Thomson was a 20 year old rookie by the name of Willie Mays.

The Detroit Tigers legendary radio announcer, the late Ernie Harwell, called the game on the radio for the Giants.

With 2.1 seconds left in overtime, and locked at 98-98, Hill inbounded the pass from under their own basket to Laettner. He received it around Kentucky's free throw line and turned and shot it for the win. They went on to beat Michigan's "Fab Five" team in the finals to repeat as champs. It was the last repeat until the University of Florida Gators did it in 2006 and 2007.
10. What historic home run did Major League Baseball pitcher Al Downing give up?

Answer: Hank Aaron's 715th career home run

The Los Angeles Dodger pitcher gave it up on April 8th, 1974. Worried by death threats after the 1973 season, Aaron was noted by saying he didn't know if he would live to see the next season so he could break the record. For serious sports trivialists, Tom House,a Braves reliever, caught the ball as it went into the bullpen. If you see the video, you can see a Dodger outfielder almost keep it from going over the fence. That person is another player who makes a name for himself 12 years later. His name is Bill Buckner.
