The episode began where a man woke up to type in numbers to a computer (these would later be revealed as the numbers that needed to be typed in at multiple times a day in the hatch on the island). After the man typed in the numbers, he went over to his phonograph player to play a record. The song which played was Mama Cass Elliott's "Make Your Own Kind of Music."

As the opening credits rolled, Hurley was seen right outside the hatch that John, Kate, and Jack had just discovered. He began to rattle of a whole bunch of numbers and Kate asked him if he was alright. Hurley acknowledged he was fine but he just had to urinate.

Jack and Kate were cautious as to what was at the bottom of the hatch they had just found and John believed he had heard a puddle. Jack and Kate wanted to go away since they feared what was in the hatch but John was anxious to go down there. John asked Jack why he did not want to go to the bottom of the hatch and Jack responded how he wanted to remain safe.

Right after Jack was asked why he did not want to go to the bottom of the hatch, the show flashed to a time when Jack was in an operating room performing surgery. During the middle of surgery, the nurse noted to Jack how the patient's blood pressure had stabilized but it was too late. The patient died and the time of death was recorded at 8:15 a.m.

The island survivors gathered around a fire near the beginning of the episode and Shannon asked where Vincent the dog was. Nobody told her where he was so Shannon told Sayid that she had to go. Sayid asked her where she was going so she told him how she had to find Vincent.

John and Jack started to argue about John wanting to blow up the hatch so that they could get into it since Boone, before he died, mentioned it. In the middle of their argument, Kate alerted them as to how there was a word written across the hatch door. The word was "quarantine" and this puzzled all three of them, along with Hurley who was also there.

Shannon had trouble finding Walt so she went back to talk to the other survivors and mentioned how she heard whispers. Sun piped in and asked Shannon if perhaps they were from the raft which had blown up in the season one finale (but unbeknownst to Sun at the time). As soon as Sun asked this, Charlie said "they" were back.

Mount, born on February 25th, 1973 in White Bluff, Tennessee portrayed Kevin a guest starring stint on "Lost." In the episode, Kevin's wife, Sarah, was in critical condition at the hospital and Jack was her doctor. Jack informed Kevin there was a possibility how Sarah would never walk again. Mount also guest starred on the TV shows, "CSI: Miami", "Smallville", and "Sex and the City."

Jack went down into the hatch and did some investigating as to what was in there. When Locke told him not to use a certain machine, Jack pointed a gun at him and the mystery man then held Locke at gunpoint. Jack struggled with the man and learned it was Desmond, the man he met when he fell during his run (this was from a flashback).

Shannon and Sayid continued to look for Walt's dog, Vincent, and they did find him. However, Vincent ran off and Shannon and Sayid separated to go look for him. While Shannon was alone, she saw Walt, who spoke awkwardly, but in the next scene she was lying on the ground and therefore Walt was still missing.

In the season one finale, Walt had been captured by members of The Others, a group of inhabitants on the island.
