Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 9, did teams leave Malaysia?

Answer: No

Departing from the eighth Pit Stop at Manukan Island in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, the remaining five teams were instructed to take a marked boat back to the Kota Kinabalu Boat Jetty on the mainland's shore, then travel just over seventy miles by taxi to the Poring Hot Springs in Ranau, Malaysia. Once there, the teams realized that they needed to traverse the canopies of the trees on extensive rope bridges in order to claim their clue at the next route marker. Since all five teams departed in the middle of the night, they found themselves waiting for the Hot Springs to open in the morning.
2. Which team claimed the Fast Forward clue in Leg 9?

Answer: Reichen and Chip

To claim the Fast Forward, teams needed to drive one hundred forty miles to the town of Sepilok to find the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. Once there, they would need to head into the forests and feed four pieces of fruit to hungry orangutans to claim the clue directing them to the Pit Stop.

While Kelly and Jon initially decided to go to the Fast Forward since they had been trailing in the beginning of the leg, Reichen and Chip were the first to arrive and they subsequently took the clue before Kelly and Jon even stepped foot at the reserve.
3. Which Detour task was completed by the most teams in Leg 9?

Answer: Neither of these were Detour options in Leg 9

After departing from the Poring Hot Springs, teams needed to take a marked car and travel one hundred forty miles to the Trushidup Palm Oil Plantation in Sandakan, Malaysia. Here, a Detour was given. In 'Chop', teams needed to use a sharp tool to cut down palm nut bunches from nearby trees which contained the next clue.

However, for every bunch with a clue inside, there would be three bunches with no clue whatsoever. In 'Haul', teams needed to transport twenty-five nut bunches, using a wheelbarrow, and place them in the back of a large truck. Once this was done, teams would receive their next clue.

While Kelly and Jon completed 'Chop', the other teams completed 'Haul'.
4. During the ladder-climbing Road Block of Leg 9, which team member did not participate?

Answer: Kelly

After the Detour, teams were instructed to drive (with a map) thirty-five miles to Gomantong Caves whereupon they found the Road Block task for this leg of the race. In the Road Block, one member of each participating team needed to climb a vertical rattan ladder over fifty feet above the floor of the cave, and then out onto a horizontal platform to collect a basket containing their next clue. Jon, Chuck, Jon, and David all finished this task, collecting the clue in the cave.
5. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 9?

Answer: Millie and Chuck

After the Road Block, teams were told to drive themselves directly to the next Pit Stop, the Sepilok Nature Resort. Reichen and Chip, who claimed the Fast Forward clue, traveled straight over from the nearby Orangutan Sanctuary in Sepilok and took the first place spot, winning themselves an American Airlines trip to Latin America.

Although it was a close finish for all the remaining teams, Millie and Chuck were the last to step on the Pit Stop mat in Sepilok and became the eighth team eliminated from the race.
6. To which country were teams told to travel in Leg 10?

Answer: South Korea

Departing from the Sepilok Nature Resort in Malaysia, teams were told to head to Puu Jih Shih Temple in Sandakan, Malaysia, the largest Buddhist temple in Borneo. Once there, teams would need to search through thousands of labeled Buddha figurines for one with their team's name on it. Once they opened the capsule containing their figurine, they would be able to find a key that would unlock a rattan bag containing their next clue.

This clue instructed teams to fly four thousand miles to Seoul, South Korea. To get to the airport, teams could take a free shuttle from the Buddhist temple departing every hour, but only one team could take it at a time.
7. None of the four participants backed out of the Road Block task in Leg 10.

Answer: True

Once in Seoul, teams needed to make their way to Namsan Park where they would need to locate Seoul Tower overlooking the city. Once there, they were instructed to make their way fifty miles out of Seoul to find Sundam Valley and the Hantam River. Due to the proximity to North Korea, some teams accidentally crossed into the demilitarized zone.

Here, teams found the Road Block in which one member of each team needed to strip down and plunge under the ice of the river, following a rope to another exit. Jon, Al, Chip, and Jeff all completed this freezing challenge.
8. In the 'Strong Stomach' Detour task of Leg 10, what live creatures did teams need to eat?

Answer: Octopus

After the Road Block, teams were told to make their way back to the city of Seoul to find Subway Station 228 where their next clue could be found in one of the pathways inside. This clue turned out to be the Detour. In this Detour, 'Strong Stomach' required that teams head to a restaurant in the city in order to devour a dish of live octopus, a local delicacy, for each member of the team.

After the bowl had been emptied, teams were able to collect their next clue.
9. How many teams completed the 'Strong Hands' Detour task in Leg 10?

Answer: Three

The other Detour task, 'Strong Hands', required that teams head to a Tae Kwan Do dojo in order to break a wooden board with their bare hands. Once each member had broken three boards, they would receive their next clue. While Kelly and Jon, Jon and Al, and David and Jeff completed the 'Strong Hands' Detour task, Reichen and Chip completed 'Strong Stomach'.

After the detour, teams were instructed to make their way to the tenth Pit Stop of the race.
10. Which team was eliminated in Leg 10?

Answer: None of these; it was a non-elimination leg

After the Detour, teams were told to head to Geunjeongjeon Hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace where they would be able to check in at the Pit Stop. Kelly and Jon, who sped through the Detour task, were able to nab the first place spot, winning themselves a Caribbean vacation from American Airlines as a result.

As the remaining teams checked in, David and Jeff were the last team to arrive whereupon they were informed that they were not eliminated from the race as South Korea would poses as the second of two non-elimination legs.
