Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the episode, in the first opening scene, we see which of the following?

Answer: A quiet beach, facing the ocean

The episode returns to the day of the crash of Flight 815. The opening scene appears to be a serene beach with a palm tree dangling above the rolling waves. The sense of paradise is abruptly interrupted when the sound of a roaring plane engine-- combined with the unmistakable sound of the island "monster"-- breaks the air. Seconds later the tail section of Flight 815 crashes into the ocean near the shore, landing opposite the island from the fuselage and cockpit. The crash explains the final fate of the tail end of the plane, though not the events leading up to it after the departure from the body of the plane.

At one point it must have crossed over the island (since survivors were found in the jungle, still in their seats). This begins the story of the survivors unseen in season one.
2. On day one, it is revealed in this episode that Emma and Zack's mother ________.

Answer: was not on Flight 815

The crash site of the tail end of the plane closely mirrors the chaos and confusion occurring simultaneously on the other side of the island, as many of the experiences faced by the tail survivors reflect those of their fuselage section counterparts.
Ana-Lucía emerges first, as Jack did, and immediately swims to rescue others. Mr. Eko recovers two children from the water and Ana manages to resuscitate the girl, Emma. Emma reveals that her mother was meeting them in Los Angeles, and Ana replies, "We're not there yet." She vows to get the children home safely.
Notice that Zack, Emma's younger brother, carries the teddy bear later seen being dragged by the "Others".
Also, one theory suggests that the children (particularly, Zack) matched the photo on the broken mug belonging to the man at the police station in Sydney with Sawyer.
3. Who did Mr. Eko ask to watch the children while he collected the bodies from the water?

Answer: Cindy

At this point, Cindy is still wearing her uniform as the Oceanic flight attendant. Recall her earlier appearances in various flashbacks aboard the plane, including speaking with Charlie before he ran to the bathroom and giving Jack the extra bottle of vodka. Cindy is on the beach, looking exhausted, when Mr. Eko asks that she look after the children while he completes a task of his own-- removing the dead bodies from the water. One body Mr. Eko is seen towing towards shore is an older man in a blue suit with very stiff limbs.

Some theorize that the body could in fact have been that of Jack's father, which was being transported on the plane and whose coffin was found empty in the jungle by the caves.
4. When Goodwin emerged from the jungle, who was Ana speaking with?

Answer: Libby

Amidst the chaos and screams on the beach, the survivors already began to interact.
Libby was tending to a man, Donald, with a broken leg bone nearly protruding through his skin. Libby distracts him with an anecdote about breaking her own leg in Vermont in order to correct the injury and reset the bone. Ana looked on, incredulous, and asked if Libby was a doctor. Libby returns that Ana saved Emma's life, and discloses that she is a clinical psychologist. Ana had just replied that she was not a doctor when a voice was heard shouting for help and Goodwin emerged from the jungle.
A strong presence of red continues to foreshadow impending danger. When Bernard is found balanced precariously in a tree, still belted to a seat, Ana and Goodwin scarcely manage to rescue him. The deceased man who was seated beside Bernard was wearing a bright red shirt, and Nathan as well.
5. While preparing a signal fire for their first night on the island, just before Ana found Goodwin attempting to start a fire, Libby was asking for which on the beach?

Answer: Water

The scene had calmed as the sky began to fade into dusk, and Libby was heard asking if anyone had water on the beach. Meanwhile, Ana found a man trying to spark a fire with a pair of sticks. He introduced himself as Goodwin, and informed her that he was in the Peace Corps. Goodwin was attempting to create a signal fire for the rescue planes to locate them, just as Sayid and Charlie had done.

However, it is interesting to be noted that Goodwin (later discovered to be an "Other") told Ana, "Let me get a signal fire started so they can find us". With the coming revelation of his true identity, Goodwin's intentions are questionable from the beginning.

In fact, the "They" to whom he referred was assumed to be the rescuers, but more likely he was expecting the "Others".
6. Mr. Eko told Bernard, "I will pray for them too." To whom/what was he referring?

Answer: The rescue planes

On the first night on the island, the entire group of survivors gathered around the large fire (which created a greater sense of unity among them, whereas the larger group had many separate campfires burning). Bernard approached Mr. Eko, who sat alone at a distance, and inquired about the bodies Mr. Eko had pulled from the water. Bernard explained that he could not find his wife (who was looking for him as well) and Mr. Eko replied that he would pray for her.

When Bernard anxiously asked where the rescue planes were-- gazing up at the starlit sky-- Mr. Eko replied that he would pray for them too. This is the first major indication of Mr. Eko's sense of religion, with many more instances to follow.
7. After the brutal encounter with a group of mysterious attackers their first night on the island, the tail section survivors examined the two dead victims on day two. Ana noted that they were missing all but which?

Answer: Identification, weapons

The survivors were roused from sleep by strange, muffled noises coming from nearby. Traveling with torches, while Libby watched the children, Goodwin and Ana encountered a bloody Mr. Eko with wild eyes and gripping a rock. Nearby were two dead bodies.
Upon examination the next morning, the people-- strangely "normal" in appearance-- were examined and found to carry nothing.
The survivor census begins subtracting from the original 23 with the three who were taken. Nathan describes the three men as a blonde, a curly-haired, and a German who had helped with the injured. Mr. Eko had also been intended to be taken, but had killed two instead. After the incident, he took on the religious vow of silence for 40 days and was seen carving the word "Lord" into his walking stick. Also note that when Mr. Eko began his vow of silence he was wearing two arm bands, one black and one white.
8. The events experienced by the tail section survivors differed from those which occurred for the fuselage survivors on the opposite side of the island. However, several similarities between the groups are revealed through statements we have heard before. Which of the following is not a correct pairing?

Answer: "They don't know where to look"-- Bernard

After the initial attack by the "Others", Ana concluded that the people had been on the island before them. A debate took place between the survivors and already began to separate them, concerning whether or not to leave the beach. (Similarly, half the fuselage survivors had insisted on moving to the caves while the other half remained on the beach.)
Ana insisted that the beach was not safe and a signal fire was not needed. Nathan argued, and Goodwin readily agreed. Cindy told the group that the pilot had said they lost communication, and the plane had been flying two hours in the wrong direction before crashing. (The pilot later confirmed this himself, before being torn from the cockpit by the "monster"/"security system".) Both he and Cindy agreed that any rescuers were looking in the wrong place.
When drawing further comparison between the two survivor groups, recall Hurley discovering that Ethan (an infiltrated "Other" with bad intentions) was not on the plane, Jack expressing doubt to Sayid about using brutality against Sawyer for Shannon's asthma medicine, and Rose to Charlie about Claire's abduction (among other instances).
9. In a deleted scene not aired in the original episode (but shown the following day on "Good Morning America"), Zack and Emma discover a wooden crate which has washed onto the beach. Inside the survivors find packages labeled, "Australian ___________ Boomerangs".

Answer: Returning

The scene shows the children racing up the beach and excitedly exclaiming that they had found something. A large wooden crate is pulled onto the sand from the waves, and on the side a large logo is clearly seen. The logo appears to be chain of footprint shapes crossing a large island, with the words "Melbourne Walkabout Tours". The exact same logo was seen (in red) on the window of the travel office in which Locke was rejected from the walkabout due to his being in a wheelchair.
A screen cap of the two can be seen at:

http://www.lost-forum.com/showthread.php?t=21797&page=2 Melbourne Walkabout Tours

The significance of the boomerangs (presumably being transported in the storage compartment of the plane) and the reason for the omission of the scene is left for interpretation.
10. Donald was buried on day four.

Answer: False

After it was uneasily decided that the survivors would remain on the beach to wait for rescue, day three passed in silence. (Here, Goodwin and other survivors collected shellfish to eat and Ana was seen cutting the arms from her leather jacket while Libby helplessly forecast Donald's leg infection causing him to be the fourth to go.)
On day five, Donald is buried among a growing group of graves (from the bodies originally found) and surrounded by a decreasing number of survivors.
On day 7, a new creature is seen and captured on the island-- a wild chicken. The group manages to capture it and Goodwin breaks its neck (again, mild foreshadowing). Libby offers roasted chicken to Mr. Eko and assures him the deaths of the "Others" were not his fault, while he continues a week of silence.
11. On the twelfth night, the survivors were attacked once again by the people from the jungle. How many tail section survivors remained by day fifteen?

Answer: 7

On day twelve, Ana heard a boar in the jungle and sharpened her walking stick/weapon in hopes of catching it. Goodwin noticed her gazes at the children, who were playing on the beach. Nathan "disappeared" for two hours into the jungle, and great suspicion was seen in Ana's eyes when he returned.
That night, the remaining survivors slept around a roaring fire when the "Others" (at least three sets of stocky, straggly-dressed legs and bare feet) were seen standing before the group. Nine were dragged away-- some screaming, some unconscious-- during the second sabotage. Among them the names "Jim" and "Nancy" are distinguished, as well as the two children. (Zack is not seen holding the teddy bear when he is taken.)
In addition to the nine kidnapped on day 12, the four survivors subsequently dying after the crash (Libby mentioned that Donald was the fourth to go) bring the total gone to thirteen, and the first three taken on day one raise it to sixteen. This leaves seven remaining: Ana, Mr. Eko, Goodwin, Libby, Bernard, Nathan, and Cindy.
12. Who said this? "I think it's time we let it go out."

Answer: Goodwin

After the second, more tragic attack Ana finds an army knife in the pocket of the female "Other" she had killed, as well as a list describing the names and appearances of each of the nine survivors taken. Goodwin later informs Ana that Nathan was not on the list because he was not a good person (suggesting that those on the list met some criteria as "good" for the kidnappers). The next morning, paranoia and suspicion erupt among those remaining when it is realized that the "Others" had premeditated the survivors to be taken. Nathan becomes a prime suspect after his solo trip to "go to the bathroom" on the previous day, but Goodwin quickly defends him. Bernard agrees that it seems "crazy" for the "Others" to infiltrate them (while Ethan happened to be doing the same on the other side of the island).

A mutual consensus is reached when the tail group decides to leave the beach since their whereabouts are known. Ana asks Goodwin about the signal fire, and he replies, "I think it's time we let it go out."
13. Which is NOT true concerning the number two in this episode?

Answer: Number of days the remaining survivors walked before resettling in the jungle

Nathan also claimed to have been "going to the bathroom" alone in the jungle for two hours, and Mr. Eko killed two "Others" on the first night on the island. Cindy told the group that the plane had flown in the wrong direction (headed back towards Fiji) for two hours. Bernard made two radio attempts, the second successfully picking up Boone's transmission from the Nigerian beech craft he discovered with Locke.
After deciding to relocate from the beach to the jungle on day 12, the exhausted tail group trekked for three days and finally found a place near a stream and fruit trees to stay on day 15.
On day 17, Ana began digging a pit. Libby questioned whether Nathan could in fact be one of the "Others".
On day 19, two days later, Ana captured Nathan and put him in the completed pit.
It is unclear whether or not the pit in which Nathan was kept was the same pit in which the raft survivors were trapped, since the tail group relocated once again to the bunker.
14. On day 19, what were Bernard and Nathan doing just before Ana captured Nathan and threw him in the pit?

Answer: Designing a trap

Bernard and Nathan were fashioning a type of makeshift trap with sticks, and Bernard questioned whether it would really catch rabbits. Ana approached without a word and kicked Nathan in the face, knocking him unconscious. After throwing him in the pit, Ana refused to allow Nathan to come out for four days.

She questioned him about the whereabouts of the missing children and concluded that he "wasn't on the plane" (just what Hurley said after finding Ethan missing from the flight manifest). Cindy also accorded to not seeing Nathan on the plane, while Goodwin remained doubtful.

While Nathan was in the pit, he disclosed that he was from Canada (Ethan claimed to have been from Ontario) and in Australia on a company retreat. His alibi faltered when he claimed to have been in the bathroom on the plane as well. No "Others" came while Nathan remained in the pit-- unfortunately, they were already there.
15. On day 23, who did Ana first confront with blame for feeding Nathan in the pit?

Answer: Bernard

After four days, Ana continued to interrogate Nathan about the children. Nathan sat wearily and refused to look up. Ana spotted a banana peel and blamed Bernard for feeding him. (Mr. Eko wordlessly acknowledged that he, in fact, had been "taking care" of Nathan.)
While Ana took a drink at the stream and sorted her thoughts, Goodwin voiced concern about letting Nathan go. He also asked Ana if she had children, invoking a negative response after a moment of reflection. (Ana's reactions to children are deciphered by the end of the following episode.) Like Jack had said to Sayid before torturing Sawyer, Goodwin argued that they were "not savages". When finding that Ana planned to cut off Nathan's finger the following day, however, Goodwin took stronger initiative to prevent it.
That evening, Goodwin freed Nathan from the pit and sent him towards the beach-- only to break his neck when Nathan walked away. Thus it was confirmed that Goodwin was the infiltrated "Other", using the method of killing similar to Ethan (who had "broken every bone" in Scott's body).
The habits, attack methods, and cunning deceptiveness of the "Others" are further uncovered throughout their encounters with the tail section survivors. It seemed that those taken were chosen for specific reasons, and assaults were planned from the beginning. The presence of other such spies, like Ethan and Goodwin, are possible among the large fuselage group (although Libby was suspected as well). Also, the identity of those "Others" on the speedboat-- among them, the twin men, the bomb-tossing woman and the bearded man (possibly the Degroots?)-- remains to be seen at this point. Now, the groups are left to question one another and seek who is the killer among them.
