The Esper Emporium Trivia Quiz

There are quite a lot of Espers. Other 'Final Fantasy' games have fewer than 27 Summon-like Magic. All of their names will crop up at least once in my quiz, so if you're not sure, just look out for them. Espers have many uses in 'Final Fantasy VI', including teaching you magic, helping your characters get stronger, and also providing powerful attacks.

Answer: Bismark

Although Bismark deals water-elemental damage to all enemies, there is no Water magic spell, so it teaches you Fire, Ice, Bolt (at a rate of x20!)and also Life (at a slower rate of x2). Maduin teaches Fire2, Ice2 and Bolt2, but deals non-elemental damage to all enemies. Triroch teaches you the third level of these spells at a rate of x1 each, and actually deals fire, ice and lightning-elemental damage to all enemies.

Firstly, you must defeat Ifrit and Shiva once they are discarded by Kefka to obtain them. Then, when you are nearing the end of the Magitek Facility, you see some Espers imprisoned in glass tubes, which you get. They are Unicorn, Maduin, Shoat, Phantom, Carbunkl and Bismark.

Phantom casts Vanish on all allies, which means that you can't be attacked by physical attacks, but magical attacks will harm you, and remove Vanish. Shoat, which is found in the Magitek Facility along with Phantom, inflicts Break on all enemies, which will grant you victory in battle. Siren and Stray are found in the Zozo Tower, and inflict Mute and Muddle on all enemies respectively.

Answer: Bolt Fist

Ramuh is found in Zozo Tower, along with Kirin, Soren and Stray, and is the first Esper you get. If you have played other 'Final Fantasy' games, you should recognize the other attack names. Judgement Bolt is the attack used by Ramuh in 'Final Fantasy VII' and 'Final Fantasy IX'. Thunder Storm is the name of Quezacotl's attack in 'Final Fantasy VIII', and Thor's Hammer is Ixion's Overdrive in 'Final Fantasy X'.

Both Golem and ZoneSeek can be bought at the Auction House when you first go there, but if you miss them, or don't have enough money, they can still be bought in the World of Ruin. ZoneSeek teaches you Rasp and Osmose at rates of x20 and x15 respectively, and also Shell at x5. Osmose is a very useful spell if you use a lot of Magic, as it absorbs MP from an enemy, and costs minimal MP to use. Shiva also teaches you Osmose, but at a much slower rate of x4.

The 5 Espers are the last 5 on the Esper List. They are Odin (Meteor x1), Bahamut (Flare x2), Ragnarok (Ultima x1), Crusader (Merton x1 and Meteor x10) and Raiden (Quick x1). They all teach you very powerful spells, but at slow rates (excluding Crusader's Meteor).

Unicorn is one of the Espers found in the Magitek Facility. In mythology, unicorns are known to have healing powers, and their blood and hair also contain magical properties.

In the World of Ruin, if you go to Doma Castle with Cyan and rest, you will enter Cyan's Dream World, where you see Cyan's dreams, which are plagued by Wrexsoul. After you save Cyan from Wrexsoul, if you go to the throne room, you can pick up the Magicite Alexandr.

In the Ancient Castle, the first Esper you get is Odin. Then, if you walk five paces down from the right hand throne, there is a secret switch, which opens its way to a room where a statue of the queen is. If you look at it, Odin gains a level and becomes Raiden.

But before that is the Blue Dragon. If you defeat all the other 7 dragons beforehand, and beat Blue Dragon last, you will get Crusader in the Ancient Castle. It's unlikely you'll do it that way, but it is possible.

Siren and Bismark are both obtained in the Magitek Facility. Siren inflicts Mute on all enemies, and Bismark deals water-elemental damage to all enemies. Fenrir makes multiple images of your allies, making them harder to hit. To get Fenrir, you must defeat Phunbaba in Mobliz (the second time you fight him).

Then speak to the little boy by the entrance to the underground room, and he says that Phunbaba dropped it.

You find Palidor's Magicite on the Solitary Island where Cid and Celes are at the start of the World of Ruin. Palidor's attack, Sonic Dive, makes all your allies perform the command Jump. It teaches you Haste and Slow at a rate of x20, so you learn them very quickly.

They are Tritoch, the frozen esper found at the beginning of the game, Terrato, found in Umaro's Cave, and Ragnarok, received from the weaponsmith in Narshe. Ragnarok teaches you Ultima at a rate of x1, which is a very slow rate, but a very powerful spell.

You receive Starlet in Owzer's House after defeating Chadarnook. You also find Relm, who is painting the picture that Chadarnook is concealed in. She rejoins your party after you defeat it.

In other 'Final Fantasy' games, Phoenix, the mythical flame-bird capable of reviving itself, revives all of your allies, and also deals fire-elemental damage to all enemies. However, the Esper Phoenix only revives your allies.

Answer: Sun Flare

Bahamut, the King of Dragons, is received after you defeat Doom Gaze. Bahamut launches a mighty beam of light at the opponent, inflicting some pretty powerful non-elemental damage to all enemies. Bahamut is frequently seen in 'Final Fantasy' games.

Surprisingly, Starlet, who restores HP to all allies, does not increase your HP at level up. She instead increases your Stamina by 2. Shoat increases your HP by 10%, Terrato by 30%, and Bahamut by 50%.

You can obtain the magicite Odin from his statue in the Ancient Castle. If you then go five paces down, you find a switch, which leads you to the queen's chamber, where you discover that she has also been turned to stone.

The name Crusader refers to the group of holy knights who fought to take the Holy Land for the Catholic Church in the Dark Ages. In 'Final Fantasy VII', Knights of the Round is also a reference to these knights.
