Garbo, Greta
April 15, 1990. Greta Garbo passed away at the age of 84 on April 15, 1990 in a hospital in Manhattan. Her body was cremated and her ashes were buried at the Skogskyrkogarden Cemetery in her hometown of Stockholm, Sweden.
4. Greta was nominated in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role four times. Greta was nominated twice in 1930, once for her role in "Romance" and again for her role in "Anna Christie". In 1938, she was nominated for her role in "Camille" and in 1940, she was nominated for her role in "Ninotchka".
Flesh and the Devil. "Flesh and the Devil" (1926), not only made Greta a bigger star, but also helped her get to know a man she would have a relationship with for several years, John Gilbert. On the day they were to be married, she got cold feet and left him standing at the altar.

Torrent. While attending the Royal Dramatic Theatre Academy, she was discovered by Mauritz Stiller, one of Sweden's top film directors. In 1924, he cast her as Countess Elizabeth Dohna in "The Atonement of Gosta Berling". The film was an instant success and Greta's stardom began to rise. In 1925, Mauritz brought Greta with him to America and with his help, she received her first American role, playing Leonora Moreno in 1926's "Torrent".
3. AFI listed their "100 Years ... 100 Passions" on June 13, 2001. Three of Greta's movies made the list. "Anna Karenina" was listed at #42, "Ninotchka" was listed at #40 and "Camille" was listed at #33.
2. Her parents, Karl Alfred Gustafsson, (1871-1920), and Anna Lovisa Johnasson, (1872-1944), had three children, Sven, Alva and Greta. Her father died of nephritis in 1920. Her sister, Alva, died of lymphatic cancer in 1926. Her brother, Sven, died of a heart attack in 1967 and in 1944, her mother, Anna, passed away.
Royal Dramatic Theatre Acting School. Greta was one of only seven students admitted to the prestigious Royal Dramatic Theatre Academy in Sweden. While there, she changed her name, developed her voice, built the foundation for her acting career and made lifelong friendships with other actors and artists.
