Ellen Pompeo. Set in the 1970s, Jake's fiancée was killed and when he went to the post office to retrieve the wedding invitations he began to fall for the postal worker played by Ellen. "Moonlight Mile" was really a break out role for both Jake and Ellen.

Dreamgirls. Jake sang the song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from the movie and musical "Dreamgirls". "Dreamgirls" was made into a film in 2006 starring Jamie Foxx, Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson who as Effie White, sang the same song in the film and picked up a Golden Globe, SAG Award and an Academy Award for her portrayal.
Michelle Williams. Jake is the godfather of Matilda Rose Ledger, the daughter of his "Brokeback Mountain" co-stars Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger. Peter Sarsgaard is involved with Jake's sister Maggie; the two have a daughter named Ramona, but Jake is not the godfather.
City Slickers. When he was ten years old Jake played Billy Crystal's son Danny Robbins in 1991's "City Slickers". "City Slickers" told the story of three men (Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby) who were all going through a mid-life crisis. They decided to take a two week trip to the Wild West to fulfill a childhood dream of driving cattle and ended up having the experience of a lifetime.
It would be eight years before Jake would appear in his next big studio film, 1999's "October Sky." During the interim Jake was cast in many movies including "The Mighty Ducks" (1992) however his parents were very strict about what film projects he took and didn't want him to spend too much time away from school and from home.
To Kill A Mockingbird. Jake named a German Shepherd, Atticus and a Puggle, Boo Radley after the characters of his favorite book, "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.
Columbia. Jake completed two years at Columbia University where both his mother and sister attended college. He studied Eastern religions and philosophy and one of his professors was Robert Thurman, the father of actress Uma Thurman.
Donnie Darko. Jake was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for his portrayal of the title character in "Donnie Darko". In this film Jake played a disturbed young man who narrowly escaped a bizarre accident, and then became plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulated him to commit a series of crimes.
He was nominated for an Oscar, and a SAG award (among others) for his performance in 2005's "Brokeback Mountain" and won both the BAFTA Award and the MTV Movie Award for this role.
