Singapore. Singapore was one of the original "Mini Tigers" of Asia, countries which had rapidly industrialised societies and productive economies. Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are all approaching modernisation, but Singapore was the first.

Laos. With barely half a million residents, Vientiane is the second smallest capital in Southeast Asia, after Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei.

Indonesia. Although the volcanic soils provide the nutrients needed for successful crops, there is of course a hazard associated with living on the slopes of a volcano, but many Indonesians have no choice. Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia all depend on their rivers, the Chao Phraya and the Mekong, for their rich alluvial soils that are also great for growing crops.
Laos. It is surrounded by Thailand, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Thailand and Cambodia both have coastlines of the Gulf of Thailand, and Thailand also on the Andaman Sea. Brunei has a coastline on the South China Sea.

5765 kms/2226 miles. Singapore is 618 kms/239 miles, making it the smallest Southeast Asian nation. Indonesia is the largest at 1,906,240 kms/741,040 miles. Brunei at 5765 kms/2226 miles, and Laos at 234,804 kms/91,400 miles are somewhere in the middle.
Tonle Sap. The others are all cities. Tonle Sap is the source of Cambodia's entire fish supply, which is significant as most Cambodians, being Buddhist, don't eat meat, and so fish is one of their staple foods.
Lee Kuan Yew. Lee Kuan Yew was the longest-serving Prime Minister of Singapore, leading the nation between 1959 and 1990. Goh Chok Tong has been the Prime Minister since 1990. Lee Hsien Loong is Lee Kuan Yew's son, and is emerging to be a significant figure on the political scene. Ong Teng Cheong has been the President since 1993.

Krung Thep. Bangkok (Krung Thep) is a great place to visit. Although crowded and busy, a laid-back atmosphere means that it is not nearly as stressful as most cities.

Bandar Seri Begawan. Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital of the small nation of Brunei Darusalam - a country situated on the island of Borneo. Borneo is divided between three countries, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.
Kota Kinabalu is a city in the Malaysian section of Borneo, Ujung Pandang is on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and Olongapo is on the Filipino island of Luzon.
Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh was called Saigon until the end of the Vietnam war. It was the capital of Cochonchina, a French colony, and later it was the capital of South Vietnam. Hanoi is the current capital city of Vietnam, and Hai Phong and Nha Trang are also Vietnamese cities.

Portugal. Timor-Leste, or East Timor, declared its independence on the 28th of November, 1975, but it was not internationally recognised until the 20th of May 2002.
Cambodia. Built in the early 12th century for King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat's original purpose was to serve as his state temple and capital city.
Irrawaddy. The Irrawaddy River is roughly 2170km long.The Mekong River is the twelfth longest river in the world. It has an estimated length of 4180km and runs through China, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The Red River flows through China Vietnam and into the South China Sea. The Rajang River is a Malaysian river on the island of Borneo.
Vientiane. Located in the Mekong Valley, the capital city Vientiane had an estimated population of only 200,000 in 2005. Vientiane is also the largest city of Laos, a nation with an estimated population of 5 924 000 (2005), making it the 103rd most populous country in the world. Louang Namtha and Louangphrabang are both other Lao cities. Vian Tiani does not exist.
