Dungeons and Dragons Trivia Questions

1. What exactly is the Dread Ring?

From Quiz
The Dread Ring Campaign

Answer: A battlefield

The battlefield gets its name from its layout- it's essentially three small rings encased within one. In each 'ring', a different section of Thayan troops are stationed along with a high ranking member of the army to lead them. One objective of the campaign is to drive them out, to give the Neverwinter army breathing room.

2. Once the player characters enter Ravenloft, they're in for quite the fight if they ever want to leave. What is the only way to escape Barovia?

From Quiz The Curse of Strahd - Barovia Basics

Answer: Acquire the permission of Strahd to leave

Strahd delights in treating newcomers as his playthings. He is never going to willfully allow them to leave his domain - they will have to earn their freedom by force, and will need to completely kill him if they're to escape. Trying to get his permission otherwise is entirely fruitless. Passive adventurers seeking a peaceful method leave themselves wide open to being toyed with by him at no gain.

3. The first beast I unleash is known as being utterly evil. This tiger-headed outsider can hurl deadly spells as well as fight in close combat, using its sharp talons and even sharper fangs. What is the first beast that I have unleashed?

From Quiz Unleash the Beast

Answer: Arijani (Rakshasa)

In the card game world of Spellfire Arijani is a level 6 monster from the Ravenloft deck. Although his level is only moderately high, his special power makes him a valuable force in your deck. As he can pick the defending champion when attacking, he can be used to easily take out supporting enemy characters like Tasslehoff Burrfoot or Marco Volo who usually do not take part in any combat action. A nasty combination presents itself when Arijani is equipped with the Ravenloft artifact Fang of the Nosferatu: You can first chose which defender Arijani faces, and then switch your power with the Dark Sun level 4 monster Earth Elemental. Now Arijani automatically defeats any defender whose card number has a last digit of 3 or less. Thus you can automatically take out, for example, the fearsome red dragon Flashburn or the night-loving vampire Strahd Von Zarovich, who are both otherwise hard to defeat. In the roleplaying game of Dungeons & Dragons Arijani - son of the rakshasa deity Ravana - is the Ravenloft domainlord of Sri Raji. You can find out more about this demi-god in the Ravenloft source books as well as the campaign setting 'Domains & Denizens'.

4. By the evil of my actions a new plane was formed: the Demiplane of Dread. Imprisoned within its borders, I now rule the domain Barovia from Castle Ravenloft. Who am I?

From Quiz Ambassadors of Despair

Answer: Strahd von Zarovich

In the beginning Strahd von Zarovich was a successful field general who was respected for his strategic genius and his prowess with the sword. Although it was never made clear which plane he called home, we know that one of his homeland's rituals was the 'Land's Bonding', in which Strahd would let his blood drop onto the ground while announcing "I am Strahd. I am the land. I, Strahd, am the land." - thusly creating a mystical connection between land and ruler. Shortly after conquering Barovia and ruling his new land from Castle Ravenloft, Strahd fell into a deep depression, nurtured by his jealousy towards his younger brother Sergei's youth, and the beginning fear of his own mortality. It was during that bleak personal crisis that Strahd fell in love with a young beauty called Tatyana. This affection, however, was not mutual; instead, Tatyana became engaged to Strahd's brother Sergei. Driven by deep jealousy, Strahd decided to accept a pact with death itself, granting him life and youth eternal. On the night of Sergei's and Tatyana's wedding, he killed his younger brother and tried to win his beloved's heart. To no avail: Tatyana flung herself from Castle Ravenloft's battlements and died on the rocks beneath the old fortress. Strahd von Zarovich was then shot and fell into darkness while the Mists of Ravenloft closed in around him. When he arose from the dead, these Mists had already sealed shut the realm, and Strahd von Zarovich had turned into Barovia's vampiric ruler. Apart from the usual rule and source books, the story of Strahd von Zarovich can be read in P. N. Elrod's novels 'I, Strahd - The Memoirs of a Vampire' (1993) and 'I, Strahd - The War Against Azalin' (1998). The Devil Strahd is also featured in James Lowder's 'Knight of the Black Rose' (1991).

5. Choosing Elf or Half-Elf as your race will entitle you to Low-light Vision, a racial trait. This means that your character can easily see further than which other race if you're in minimal light?

From Quiz "Dungeons and Dragons" 3.5 Hodgepodge

Answer: Human

Low-light Vision may come in handy if you're camping out for the night and need to see beyond a campfire or it may benefit you if you're holding a torch in a dungeon or cave. Regardless, this trait allows one to see double the distance that a human can in locations containing little light. Gnomes have the same vision capabilities as elves. Dwarves, on the other hand, have Darkvision which allows them to see up to sixty feet in darkness, but only in black and white. The same goes for Half-Orcs. Some spells and items found throughout the game may enhance one's sight in light or dark. Some monsters, of course, are pure darkness, and any type of vision will never reveal their true form.

6. The Mark Of Detection is carried by which house?

From Quiz Eberron: Dragonmarks

Answer: House Medani

Granting powers ranging from Detect Poison to Moment of Prescience, the Mark of Detection has allowed the Half-Elves of House Medani to create the Warning Guild, offering services from food tasting through bodyguards.

7. D and D: Let's start with one that'll get your brain moving. Jack is a first level human fighter with and intelligence of 12. How many skill points does jack have?

From Quiz Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 Game Time

Answer: 16

Jack gets four points for being human to start off with. Then he gets 2+ his intelligence modifier (1) times four for being a first level fighter. 4 + (2+1)*4 = 16.

8. How much damage does a longsword do?

From Quiz D&D Weapons

Answer: 1d8

With its critical of 19-20 x2, you can't do more than 16 points of damage with a longsword in one attack. (Assuming you don't have Power Attack or some sort of magical longsword).

9. "Sit! So, Giorgio, you think you know the secrets of this realm? We shall see... Tell me, by the Barovian calander, what year did Barovia first come to be in this place?"

From Quiz Dungeons and Dragons - Ravenloft: Domain of Dread

Answer: 351

"Lord Strahd himself told me of the beginnings of Barovia here in 351. 470 was the year that we, the Vistani, came to this land and struck a deal with von Zarovich. The Grand Conjunction reshaped this realm in 740. 750 was the year the infamous Dr Rudolph van Richten - the learned monster-hunter - vanished."

10. What wizard lends his (or her) name to a spell featuring a Floating Disk?

From Quiz Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition

Answer: Tenser

This first-level chestnut pre-dates the earliest 1st edition hardback rulebooks.

11. What is the chance of a blink dog appearing BEHIND you?

From Quiz Dungeons and Dragons Monsters

Answer: 75 Percent

A 12-sided die is rolled to see where a blink dog appears. A roll of 4-12 means the dog will appear from behind.

12. When the party arrives at camp, who do they find mainly responsible for giving orders (quests) as the leader of the Neverwinter army?

From Quiz The Dread Ring Campaign

Answer: Sergeant Knox

Knox takes up the helm and is the face of the army. Atop his warhorse, he works diligently in his fervent opposition of the Thayan army.

13. Like spells, psionic powers come in different levels. What is the highest level of psionic powers you can learn without using the Epic Level Handbook's rules?

From Quiz Power Play

Answer: 9th level

Just like arcane and divine spells, psionic powers come in all levels up to 9th although not all of the classes reach this pinnacle of power. As a psion, you attain 9th level powers at class level 17, as a wilder, you'll need class level 18. Psychic warriors, a class combining psionic power with a fighter-like feat progression, can reach up to 6th level powers, similar to a bard. "Complete Psion" adds another three power-wielding classes - the ardent, also capable of learning 9th level powers, and the divine mind and lurk, both of which max out at 6th level.

14. Once a lich-king on the plane called Greyhawk, I am now a prisoner on Ravenloft. I left Barovia and Strahd behind, and a new domain formed around me. As domain lord I now rule Darkon with an iron fist in a velvet glove. Who am I?

From Quiz Ambassadors of Despair

Answer: Azalin Rex

Azalin Rex was born as Firan Zal'honan in the land of Oerth on the Greyhawk plane. He was an ambitious and ruthless wizard who studied his Art without conscience or remorse. Using his already vast potential he transformed himself from a mortal man into the undead lich Azalin Rex, thus considerably increasing his power. After having been lured into a trap by opposing forces, Azalin fled from his attackers and hid in a bluish glowing mist - the Mists of Ravenloft had imprisoned him. Azalin Rex arrived in Barovia, homeland of the domain lord Strahd 'the Devil' von Zarovich. At that time, Azalin's first and only goal was to flee this realm of darkness and return to his home on Greyhawk. He subsequently formed an unholy and instable alliance with Strahd. Together they devised a powerful ritual called 'Requiem' which, they hoped, would allow them to escape the Mists of Ravenloft. But, alas, the ritual failed. Blaming their failure on the vampire, Azalin finally quit the uneasy alliance with Strahd and entered the Mists on his own behalf, only to emerge in the newly formed domain named Darkon. Being the new domain lord, Azalin's first undertaking was to build an army of undeath and start waging war on his hated former ally Strahd von Zarovich. Since the end of that first war, Azalin Rex is constantly either trying to escape Darkon or waging wars against neighboring domains. Noteworthy among these may especially be the 'Dead Man's Campaign', a series of no-mercy wars between Darkon and Falkovnia. The story of Firan Zal'honan can be found in the (old) Greyhawk source books. The arrival of Azalin on Ravenloft and his interaction with Strahd may be read in P. N. Elrod's 'I, Strahd - The War Against Azalin' (1998). Further information on Azalin as Darkon's ruler are supplied in the source books of Ravenloft.

15. The Humans and Half-Orcs of House Tharashk manifest which mark?

From Quiz Eberron: Dragonmarks

Answer: Mark of Finding

The Mark of Finding has allowed House Tharashk to establish itself as the best source of bounty hunters in all of Khorvaire. Its powers range from Know Direction to Discern Location.

16. What D&D creature has a CR of 1/3, is considered a small animal, and has Scent as a special quality? (Note: This creature can be found in Appendix 1 of the Monster Manual.)

From Quiz Monsters with CR of 1 or Less

Answer: Dog

The cat is considered a tiny animal and the elephant is considered huge. The eagle, although small, does not receive Scent as a special quality; in fact, eagles do not receive any special qualities.

17. Which creature would NOT be found serving as a guard in the lair of a gold dragon?

From Quiz AD&D 2nd Edition: Monstrous Manual

Answer: pit fiend

Because gold dragons are of lawful good alignment, they would not ally themselves with a being of chaotic or evil alignment. The Monstrous Manual specifically notes that gold dragons often have loyal guards protecting their lairs that are either animals appropriate to the terrain, storm giants, or good-aligned cloud giants.

18. How much damage does a silver dagger do?

From Quiz D&D Weapons

Answer: 1d4

The silvering of the dagger doesn't actually change its damage, it simply negates the damage reduction of some enemies.

19. "Hmm. Let me see. Barovia was the first land. What land was the second to appear?"

From Quiz Dungeons and Dragons - Ravenloft: Domain of Dread

Answer: Forlorn

"Forlorn settled next to Barovia in 547, desolate save the dense forests and the mysterious Castle Tristenoira, home to ghosts and vampires. Darkon and Mordent both formed in 579. Tepest came to be much later in 691, known to be the home of the terrible cannibal Mindefisk sisters, Laveeda, Leticia, and Lordina."

20. One of the important concepts in 3rd edition D & D is the concept of 'Skill' points. The amount of skill points you get depends on one of your abilities. Which one?

From Quiz 3rd Edition D & D rules

Answer: Intelligence

Higher Intelligence means that you get higher skill points. Skills include Pick-pocket, Concentration, Wilderness Lore, Disable Device, Diplomacy, Bluff etc. Some of these skills vary with different games. Another important aspect is you can allot points in any skill irrespective of your class. For e.g. a fighter may allot points to skills like Hide or Move Silently or even Lock Picking etc. However there are class skills and cross-skills. What this means is that if I choose a class which normally doesn't use certain skills (like a fighter pick-pocketing), and then I have to invest more skill points to gain one level of that particular skill. Number of skill points required to progress in a cross-class skill is 2 while it is 1 for a class skill.

21. What is the Bulett's nickname?

From Quiz Dungeons and Dragons Monsters

Answer: Land Shark

A skilled Elf can make a Bulett's hide into a plus one to plus three shield.

22. The Expert Set rules explain how to run town and wilderness adventures and give examples of settlements in the Known World setting. What is the name of the settlement, located by a lake, that is suggested for use as the adventurers' home town?

From Quiz Dungeons & Dragons: Expert Rules (1983)

Answer: Threshold

The Expert rules set includes detailed maps of what was originally called the Known World setting, which was later incorporated into a fictional world known as Mystara. There is a particularly detailed description of the realm known as the Grand Duchy of Karameikos that would reappear in many published campaign settings. Threshold is a small rural town in a remote region of the Grand Duchy that faces onto a large unexplored wilderness area. The Dungeon Master's section of the Rulebook suggests that player characters might begin their adventures there, although this is entirely optional. Suggestions are provided for adventures they might have in the town and nearby wilderness, along with information about the local politics, and how they can travel to other locations in the realm to have adventures elsewhere. Specularum is the capital city of the Grand Duchy and a major port. As such, it may serve as a point of departure for adventures involving sea travel. Darokin is the name of both a republic neighboring the Grand Duchy and its capital city, while Thyatis is the name of both the powerful empire of which the Grand Duchy is a part, and its capital city.

23. In the Basic rules of Dungeons & Dragons, which activity earns more experience points?

From Quiz Dungeons & Dragons: Basic Rules (1983)

Answer: Finding treasure

In Dungeons & Dragons, characters can advance in levels, and thereby become more powerful, by gaining experience points. In this version of the game, characters earn many more experience points from treasure than killing monsters. The Players Manual explains that this encourages players to avoid combat when possible, as this is highly risky for their characters, especially those at the low levels covered in the Basic set. It states that characters might avoid having to fight and kill monsters by tricking them or using magic to calm them down. This system is in keeping with the rules of the original version of the game released in 1974, while later versions, such as Fifth Edition, no longer give experience points for finding treasure. The Basic Set does not give rules for building strongholds or unarmed combat, which are detailed in the subsequent Expert set and Companion set, respectively.

24. This second-level spell is a favorite of the character Merle in The Adventure Zone. Available to clerics, paladins, and bards, it can prevent a target from lying.

From Quiz Dungeons and Dragons Spells

Answer: Zone of Truth

Zone of Truth allows the caster to designate a given area as a "zone of truth" where all creatures are prevented from deliberately lying if they do not pass a charisma saving throw. While this spell is very useful in interrogations, it has its limits. It cannot prevent the targets from making vague or misleading statements or from just refusing to speak at all, and as soon as a target leaves the zone, they are free to lie as much as they want. In this question, I mention The Adventure Zone, which is a comedic D&D podcast, because I most strongly associate this spell with the character of Merle Highchurch, their dwarf cleric, who absolutely adores this spell and casts it frequently even when it's not particularly useful. Since the podcast plays fast and loose with the rules, the often has exaggerated effects, such as making NPCs suddenly blurt out secrets, but since Merle's player doesn't seem to fully understand any of his other spells, it doesn't really hurt the game balance.

25. Of course you won't be able to reach the highest power levels at the beginning. What name is given to 0-level powers, similar to wizards' cantrips and clerics' orisons? (Remember this is 3.5 edition - the older 3.0 would have a different answer)

From Quiz Power Play

Answer: 0-level powers do not exist in 3.5

While the original Dungeons and Dragons 3.0 Psionics Handbook introduced 0-level powers called talents, these were silently dropped for the 3.5 edition. This was at least partially due to the complicated bookkeeping involved in using these talents: you got to use as many talents for free per day as you had class levels, but afterwards, you had to pay one power point. You can imagine that this tracking gets unwieldy at higher levels - and these single points rarely matter when your daily allotment is over 300. All power-wielding characters except the divine mind get access to 1st level powers at the start of their career; the divine mind has to wait until level 5 before using any powers.

26. Long ago I was a Knight of Solamnia. On the day the Cataclysm hit Istar my flesh was burnt, and I died. When I opened my eyes again I rose as the death knight now known as the Knight of the Black Rose. Who am I?

From Quiz Ambassadors of Despair

Answer: Loren Soth

The dark story of Lord Loren Soth began immediately prior to the Cataclysm on the Dragonlance plane. At that time Lord Soth was a highly honored Knight of the Rose, the highest order of the Knights of Solamnia. He was married and ruler of Daargard Keep in northern Abanasinia. Unfortunately, Loren Soth fell in love with an elven cleric named Isolde with whom he started an intimate relationship. Parallel to his adultery, his wife gave birth to a son. Because his son was deformed Soth accused his wife of disloyalty and, in his ire, killed both wife and son. After getting rid of the bodies Soth married Isolde, despite having been found guilty of murdering his former family by the Knights Council. Despite all these failings as a Knight of Solamnia, Paladine gave Soth a chance for redemption: Lord Soth was granted the one chance to prevent the Cataclysm from happening. He started travelling to Istar to stop the upcoming death of thousands, but once again he failed. Incited by his travelling companions Soth believed Isolde was being unfaithful to him. He returned to Daargard Keep to find Isolde holding their newborn child in her arms. At the moment the Cataclysm struck Istar, the chandelier of Daargard's hall fell and flames engulfed Lord Soth's second wife and second son. Despite Isolde's heart-rending pleas to at least save their son from the fire, Lord Soth turned away and let them both burn to death. The fire spread quickly and soon the whole of the keep was aflame, consuming with it Lord Loren Soth and his few remaining knights. When he opened his eyes the next time, Soth had become the Knight of the Black Rose, death knight of Daargard Keep. The whole story of Lord Soth can be read in Margaret Weis' and Tracy Hickman's 'Dragonlance Chronicles' (1984 - 1985) and their 'Dragonlance Legends' (1986). Really worth reading are also James Lowder's 'Knight of the Black Rose' (1991) and 'Spectre of the Black Rose' (1999).

Sorcerers and Wizards roll 1d4, Bards and Rogues roll 1d6, Clerics, Druids, Monks, and Rangers roll 1d8, Fighters and Paladins roll 1d10, and Barbarians, the most resilient of the bunch, roll 1d12, the highest possible hit die roll.
