Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marquette University is located in which state?

Answer: Wisconsin

Marquette is located in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
2. Marquette is a Catholic university. But what religious order is it affiliated with?

Answer: Society of Jesus

Members of the Society of Jesus are more often referred to as Jesuits. Other well-known Jesuit universities include Boston College, Loyola University of Chicago, and Gonzaga University.
3. What is Marquette's athletic mascot?

Answer: Golden Eagles

The Hilltoppers were Marquette's original mascot, though most people remember the Marquette Warriors. However, the Golden Eagle has been the mascot since the 90's. Panthers have never represented MU, but they are the mascot of another Milwaukee university: University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
4. Of all of Marquette's seven residence halls, which three were built as residence halls?

Answer: McCormick, Schroeder, and O'Donnell

Mashuda, Cobeen, and Carpenter Tower were all originally built as hotels. In fact, the Beatles stayed in Mashuda while it was a hotel. Straz Tower was originally built to be a YMCA.
5. Marquette has many ghost stories. Which building is home to both a Jesuit ghost and a Native American ghost?

Answer: Johnston Hall

Johnston Hall is home to the College of Communications, and possibly these two ghosts. The building was built on the site of an Indian settlement predating the city of Milwaukee, giving credibility to the story of a Native American male haunting the lower levels of the building. Johnston Hall was originally built to serve as a home for the Jesuits who taught at Marquette College, and rumor has it that a Jesuit priest hung himself in his room on the fifth floor while he lived there.
6. Though often just referred to as Olin Engineering, the engineering complex is actually made up of two buildings. What is the name of the other building?

Answer: Haggarty Hall

Haggarty Hall was the original engineering building. Olin was added later to increase office and instructional space as the College of Engineering increased enrolment.
7. Not all buildings on Marquette's campus were built by Marquette. But there is one sure way to find out. What do all Marquette-built buildings have in common?

Answer: They have AMDG written on their corner stones

Although it is now the trend for new Marquette structures to feature variations of the Marquette Hall spire, it hasn't always been so. AMDG stands for "Ad Majoram Dei Gloriam," or "To the greater glory of God", which is the Jesuit motto. Though it is featured on all Marquette constructed buildings, it may be obstructed by bushes or additions, as is the case for Memorial Library.
8. If you want to listen to Marquette radio, where should you tune in?

Answer: TV channel 96

Believe it or not, Marquette radio broadcasts live via TV. The screen just shows a powerpoint slide, but the show comes through your TV's speakers. Marquette radio also broadcasts live on the web at marquetteradio.mu.edu.
9. Marquette's new library, set to open in the fall of 2003, will contain a full replica of which governor's office?

Answer: Tommy Thompson

Tommy Thompson was a large proponent of education during his term as governor of Wisconsin, which ended when he was appointed to be Secretary of Health and Human Services by President George W. Bush. Jim Doyle is the current governor of Wisconsin.
10. Marquette holds many valuable and collectable items on campus. Which of these items is *not* a part of Marquette's collection?

Answer: Gutenberg Bible

The Tolkien manuscripts are held in the basement of Memorial Library and were donated to the university. The Dali painting is a part of the art collection housed at Marquette's Haggarty Museum of Art. The St. Thomas Moore statue resides at the Law School.
11. Which of the following is found at no other college or university in Wisconsin, other than Marquette?

Answer: Dental School

Marquette's Dental School moved into its new building in the fall of 2002. Though Marquette does have a law school, it is not the only one in Wisconsion. Marquette at one time had both a department of opera and a medical school, but the department of opera has since closed, and the medical school has become the now independent Medical College of Wisconsin.
12. Where did the Marquette men's basketball team play their home games until 2018, when it was demolished?

Answer: Bradley Center

Though the men played at the Bradley Center, the women played at the US Cellular Arena across the street. The Al McGuire Center was finished in 2004, to which the women moved. There was never a Pere Marquette Dome.
13. Of the following, who did NOT receive the Pere Marquette Discovery Award, the highest honor bestowed by Marquette University?

Answer: Pope John XXIII

This award has only been bestowed three times, and the last time was in February 2003 when Tutu was awarded it.
14. Which building on campus was named for Marquette's first president?

Answer: La Lumiere Hall

Fr. Stanislaus LaLumiere, SJ, was the president of Marquette when it was founded in 1881. The hall is home to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature.
15. For whom was the university named?

Answer: A Jesuit missionary to the New World

Fr. Jacques Marquette, SJ, was a missionary. He is depicted on the university seal as riding in a boat with a Native American guide.
