Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first match on 12TH March saw the defending premiers, Penrith, play Newcastle at home. Did Penrith kick off their season with a win?

Answer: No

Newcastle beat Penrith 20-14. Also in round 1, a very low-scoring match saw the Wests Tigers start the season well (as they often do), beating the Sharks 12-6.
2. We only had to wait until Round 2 for the first 'golden point' result of 2004. Which team defeated the Wests Tigers 17-16 in extra time?

Answer: South Sydney

Willie Peters kicked a field goal eight minutes into extra time. The match was controversial however, because the referee (Steve Lyons) failed to blow half-time after five minutes of extra time had elapsed. This allowed the Rabbitohs to get down the other end and score their golden point, rather than having to kick off to the Tigers.
3. In round 3, the Roosters met the Bulldogs. What was the somewhat surprising outcome of this match?

Answer: Roosters won 35-0

These were the two competition favourites, but the scoreboard did not reflect that. In Round 13, the Bulldogs reversed the result with a 40-12 victory.
4. The much anticipated "Grand Final replay" happened in Round 4, when Penrith met the Roosters at Telstra Stadium. What was the result?

Answer: Penrith won 22-6

The match was incredibly similar to the Grand Final, with Penrith defending brilliantly, holding the Roosters to just six points. Penrith made six line breaks, the Roosters just one.
5. The Cowboys finally broke their long standing win-less record by beating the Broncos in Round 6, 2004.

Answer: False

The Broncos beat the Cowboys 19-12 in round 6. This took their record against North Queensland to 14 wins and two draws from their 16 matches since 1995, when the Cowboys joined the ARL.
6. The traditional ANZAC test between Australia and New Zealand was won by Australia 37-10. Where was the match played?

Answer: Newcastle

Australia scored 7 tries to 2, continuing their dominance of international rugby league.
7. Which team won the City v Country match in 2004?

Answer: Country

Country pipped city 24-20 at Gosford.
8. What historical event(s) happened in Round 10, 2004?

Answer: Both of these

Friday night football saw Newcastle defeat Brisbane 17-16 in golden point, with a Kurt Gidley field goal. On the Saturday night, the Cowboys and Souths played out a 20-20 draw, the first draw since the introduction of the golden point rule in 2003.
9. Who kicked the winning field goal in golden point time for NSW in State of Origin I, 2004?

Answer: Shaun Timmins

The historical first State of Origin golden point match saw NSW beat QLD 9-8 with a field goal in the 83rd minute. Queensland actually scored 2 tries to 1, but the superior goal-kicking of Craig Fizgibbon (and of course the field goal) got the Blues home. An amazing defensive game, with NSW making over 400 tackles.
10. In what many saw as the match of the season so far, Penrith played the Bulldogs in Round 12. What was the result?

Answer: Penrith won 40-29

The Bulldogs led 29-28 with 10 minutes to go, but Penrith scored 2 late tries to take the match.

13. Wests Tigers slumped to new lows, conceding 50 or more points in two ocnsecutive matches. How many points did they score in those 2 matches?

Answer: 0

St George-Illawarra beat them 50-0 in Round 15, and the Roosters beat them 56-0 in Round 16. This was not the first time a team had conceded over 100 points in 2 consecutive matches, but it was the first time that the losing team failed to score in both matches.
14. In a rare Friday night football match at Olympic Park in Round 17, Penrith scored the first 10 points of the match. The Melbourne Storm then went on to score the next __ points?
