From Quiz Baseball Unstitched [4]

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The first National League team to go to a World Series was the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903 in a loss to Boston. The Braves appeared in a win against the Athletics in 1914. The Phillies made their first appearance in 1915, only to lose to the Red Sox. The Reds' first time in the big show was the 1919 Black Sox Scandal against the White Sox. The Cardinals were the last NL team to make an appearance, having to wait until 1926 in a win against Babe Ruth and the Yankees.

93. Which slugger set an American League record by hitting 12 leadoff-game home runs in a season?

From Quiz Baseball Unstitched [3]

Answer: Brady Anderson

Anderson set this record with the Baltimore Orioles in 1996. It was also Brady's career high for home runs with 50, and many still question why he led off the game for the Orioles so many times in the season. Although he hit 50, he still finished runner-up for the home run crown to Mark McGwire of the Athletics who hit 52.

94. When Major League Baseball began in 1901, the American League had to wait four seasons before they would experience their first perfect game. In what season did the National League see their first after the two leagues combined?

From Quiz Hardened Baseballs

Answer: 1964

The National League waited until the sixth decade in 1964, when Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning threw his perfecto. His June 21st perfect game was a 6-0 win over the Mets. The following season, Dodger Sandy Koufax would throw one against the Cubs. The American League's first perfect game was thrown by Cy Young in 1904 with the Boston Americans.

95. In 1978, Bobby Bonds set a Major League Baseball record by striking out 1500 times in a career the quickest. In his 11th season, Bonds reached the 1500-mark. Who broke Bobby's record by striking out 1500 times in his 10th season?

From Quiz Real Baseball Curves

Answer: Adam Dunn

Dunn spent his first eight seasons with the Reds from 2001-2008. He led the league three times with the Reds for striking out the most times in a season. In 2009, Adam signed with the Washington Nationals, then in 2010 broke Bonds' record.

From Quiz Challenging Mixed Baseball

98. Nolan Ryan threw his fourth no-hitter on June 1, 1975, against the Baltimore Orioles. What was the final pitch?

From Quiz Killer Baseball Potpourri [2]

Answer: Change-up

After throwing second baseman Bobby Grich nothing but fast balls and working the count to 2-2, Grich fouled off another fastball before freezing on a change-up for a called strike three. Ryan won the game, 1-0 and completed a no-hitter.

99. Who took the bragging rights as the first manager to win a Major League World Series crown?

From Quiz Teary-Eyed Baseball

Answer: Jimmy Collins

Collins was a player-manager-third baseman for the Boston Americans in 1903. He began his managerial position when the franchise started in the American League in 1901. The first-ever World Series was held in 1903, and saw the Americans go up against the NL Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Although the Pirates with Fred Clarke at the helm won the first game of the series, Boston came back to win it five games to three. Collins took the Americans to a 1904 AL Championship also, but there was no World Series played that season. His career record was 455-376 over six seasons.

100. What caused Babe Ruth to miss a major part of the 1925 season?

From Quiz Sick MLB [1]

From Quiz Wide Angle Baseball

From Quiz Baseball: The Ultimate Challenge

Answer: Walked

Ron Blomberg was the first official American League DH on April 6, 1973, in a game with his Yankees. It was opening day against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. In the top of the first inning, Blomberg drew a bases-loaded walk from pitcher Luis Tiant. The Red Sox went on to win the game 15-5. Matty Alou doubled in the top of the first, then Tiant walked Bobby Murcer, and gave up another walk to Graig Nettles to load the bases before walking Blomberg and sending Alou home.

From Quiz How's Your Stuff?

Answer: Dan Bankhead

This one is pretty strange. Bankhead was a pitcher. He hit a home run in his debut on August 12, 1947, for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Even stranger, it was Dan's only hit of the season, and also the only home run of his career. He appeared in four games in the season, and went a no-decision in each game. He retired after three seasons with a 9-5 record. His only World Series was in his rookie season of 1947, but did not even pitch in the series, and reached base on an error in his only batting attempt. He later scored a run. The Dodgers lost to the Yankees in that series. Jackie Robinson went 0-for-20 in the first five games of his career.

From Quiz Oxygen Tank Baseball

Answer: Don Sutton

Sutton played for 23 seasons, mostly for the Dodgers, and he was never even the runner-up to lead his league in strikeouts. He won 20 games in a season only once, and that was in 1976 when he went 21-10. Don was also the first 300-game winner to take 20 seasons to win number 300. That happened on June 18, 1986.

112. Since the emergence of Major League baseball in 1901, which team was the first to set a record by having four pitchers lose 20+ games in the same season?

From Quiz Twisting the Brain

Answer: Boston Beaneaters

The Beaneaters (later Braves) of Boston were the first team to really show their rubber arms, going 53-103 in 1905. One of those pitchers, Vic Willis, won 20+ games in a season eight times, but also lost 20+ games three times. He went 12-29 in 1905. Three others joined him in the record books. Irv Young went 20-21, Chick Fraser went 14-21, and Kaiser Wilhelm was 3-23, all in 1905. The Superbas (later Dodgers) were really a poor team in 1908 with their 53-101 record. They came very close to Boston's record. They were by the arms of Kaiser Wilhelm (16-22), Harry McIntire (11-20), and Jim Pastorius (4-20). Brooklyn almost tied the record with Nap Rucker going 17-19 in the 1908 season also. When the Mets began their franchise in 1962, they had two 20-game losers, then had two more in 1965.

113. Which was the first American League team to play a regular season night game under permanently installed lighting?

From Quiz 100 MPH Baseball

115. The 1916 World Series set some records. At the time, it had the longest World Series game in history. Also, two pitchers threw a 14-inning complete game, another record. Who was the pitcher who went the distance and won it?

From Quiz BBB: Brain-Buster Baseball

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth of Boston and Smith of the Brooklyn Robins battled it out on the October 8th day in the second game of the World Series. After Brooklyn's Hy Myers hit a first inning home run, the Red Sox tied it in the third. That was it until the 14th inning when Boston scored the game-winner. It was Ruth's only appearance in the series, and was a 14-inning six hit victory. Ruth helped his own cause by providing the game-winning RBI in the 14th. The Red Sox won the series, four games to one.

He joined the Cardinals mid-season of 2004, and had the opportunity to experience his first World Series. He made the most of it by hitting two four-baggers. Walker was the only Cardinal to hit a home run in the series. He hit them in game one and game three. Larry also hit two doubles in the series for a .357 average. The Red Sox won the series, four games to none.

From Quiz Hard Rock Baseball

Answer: Tony Cloninger

He also gave up a career high 29 home runs in the '66 season. 1966 was not a total loss for Tony, as he hit five home runs in the season, including two grand slams.

118. Most baseball fans know that Joe DiMaggio set a record for the longest hitting streak in the major leagues at 56 games. But who set a hit streak record in the minor leagues?

From Quiz Baseball and More Baseball

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Yes, the Yankee Clipper set a minor league record as well with a 61-game streak in 1933 with San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League. From Quiz Weird Moments in Baseball
