Captain Calvin Spalding, aka singer/actor Loudon Wainwright III makes his third and final appearance on 'M*A*S*H' in this episode. All three of his appearances were during season three. He composes a cute song for Douglas MacArthur during the episode.

Soon-Tek Oh's face is a very familiar one to avid 'M*A*S*H' fans. A Japanese-born Korean, Mr. Oh was frequently available to play various Korean roles on the show, and appeared in a total of five episodes between 1975 and 1982. This was his first appearance.

Talk about your assymetrical retaliations! Frank's seemingly childish act is met by brute force from Hawkeye. This somewhat uncomfortable scene is reminiscent of a scene in the 1970 film 'MASH', where Trapper punches Frank after he had blamed an orderly for the death of a patient. In the scene in this episode, the reasoning for the punch seems much less justified.

Answer: Costa Rica

Played by Louisa Moritz, this is Nurse Sanchez's only appearance on the show. According to my research, no Costa Rican citizens participated in the Korean War. However, it could be that Sanchez had immigrated to the United States, and then volunteered to serve in Korea.

Answer: Kathy

Father Mulcahy's sister's given name is Kathy, but the Catholic name she has assumed is Maria Angelica. In her letter she suggests she might leave the order because she is considering becoming a mother. We also learn that she went to college on a basketball scholarship.

Answer: Frank

Hawkeye and Trapper have already established their positions in the 'assembly line', and they give Frank the dirtiest job. Most amusingly, Klinger is in line wearing on a skirt and a bra that is hanging from his shoulder.

Specifically, Frank apparently has a tortoise shell scrub brush that he uses before performing surgery. The brush was a gift of his mother, thus the sentimental feelings attached. No evidence is given as to the location of said scrub brush.

Captain Calvin Spaulding is his full name. He's played by Loudon Wainwright III in this and two other season three episodes. In this episode he actually has a speaking part, along with his singing, and we see him performing in the O.R. as a surgeon.

Answer: Ethiopia

Ethiopia and South Africa were the only two African countries to send troops to Korea during the Korean War. This soldier speaks to Hawkeye twice in his native language, namely Amharic, but there is no translation of what he says. Hawkeye does make reference to 'Haile Salassie' (longtime emperor) in his comment back to the Ethiopian soldier.

Keene Curtis played John Allen Hill, owner of Melville's, on the sitcom 'Cheers'. This was Curtis's only appearance on 'M*A*S*H', but what an appearance it was!

Sorry, this is something of a rotten trick question, but then, who wears more dresses on 'M*A*S*H' than Maxwell Q. Klinger? Trapper is also being attended to, by the Bobbie Mitchell, who played Nurses Mason, Marshall, Murphy, Gilbert, Lyons, Albe, Baker and Gage in other episodes. That has to be a 'M*A*S*H' record.

Hawkeye tells Radar to do whatever he wants with the leftover money. Radar tells Hawkeye that whenever there are leftover funds certain forms have to be filled out. Hawkeye ignores this rule and tells Radar no way. Did you ever notice Hawkeye always smelled his food before he ate it? He even made BJ smell his food once!

Hawkeye inquires about the 'scratch', and Radar explains that it is not a scratch, but rather the remnant of a bite from a 'mutt' that Radar was feeding from kitchen scraps. Hawkeye immediately suggests that Radar might be in danger of contracting rabies from the dog, and insists that Radar find the animal.

According to Radar, 'Captain Pierce says it (the still) is his 'wellspring of life'.'! Frank responds, 'Oh that's just something he read in 'Cosmopolitan'.' (Whatever that means!) Trapper and Hawkeye enter the Swamp just in time to save their wellspring. They sample the still's product, to be sure its quality has not been compromised. Hawkeye calls the gin 'mother's milk', while Trapper refers to it as 'nectar of the gods'.

According to Hawkeye's letter to his father, the M*A*S*H doctors have 'spent the better part of a whole day mending the heirs to Plato, Plutarch, Aristotle and Socrates.' Trapper then discusses Hippocrates, who he says was 'born in 460' and 'wrote treatises on medicine and handed down concepts that are still used today.' Frank then mentions the Hippocratic Oath, showing that he actually stayed awake for at least part of his medical school! The doctors of the 4077th are indeed well-schooled...
