'M*A*S*H' - Season 3 Trivia Questions

1. Radar receives an important call in his office while the medical staff is hard at work in the O.R. After summoning Henry, what is the name of the very musical surgeon who takes over at Colonel Blakes table in the O.R.?

From Quiz
'M*A*S*H' - 'Big Mac'

Answer: Spaulding

Captain Calvin Spalding, aka singer/actor Loudon Wainwright III makes his third and final appearance on 'M*A*S*H' in this episode. All three of his appearances were during season three. He composes a cute song for Douglas MacArthur during the episode.

2. Two guest stars appear in this episode of 'M*A*S*H'. The first plays Mr. Kwang, a South Korean draftee who performs as an orderly at the 4077th. What semi-regular guest star plays this role?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Love and Marriage'

Answer: Soon-Tek Oh

Soon-Tek Oh's face is a very familiar one to avid 'M*A*S*H' fans. A Japanese-born Korean, Mr. Oh was frequently available to play various Korean roles on the show, and appeared in a total of five episodes between 1975 and 1982. This was his first appearance.

3. After a session in the O.R., tempers are high and tolerance for nonsense is low. Thus, when Hawkeye insults Margaret, she eggs Frank on to guard her honor. How exactly does Frank retaliate on her behalf?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'House Arrest'

Answer: He whips Hawkeye in the rear end with a towel

Hot Lips is insulted and demands 'satisfaction', much as if she were calling for a duel. However, her satisfaction will only come through Frank, who seems weary about getting involved. Frank's fragile ego can only take so much from the persistent Hot Lips, however, and he is forced to towel whip Hawkeye.

4. The episode opens with a nice musical ode to Tokyo by the guitar strumming Captain Spaulding. Who plays Captain Spaulding in this, his first of three appearances on 'M*A*S*H'?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Rainbow Bridge'

Answer: Loudon Wainwright

To be more precise, Loudon Wainwright III played Captain Calvin Spaulding. Wainwright's father was a longtime editor of 'Time Magazine'.

5. 'Mad Dogs and Servicemen' opens with Radar tending to his mini-menagerie. While Radar feeds milk to his collection of animals, Henry approaches holding one of Radar's pets that he has found in the shower. What animal is the Colonel carrying?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Mad Dogs and Servicemen'

Answer: Turtle

Somewhat annoyed, Henry relates how he has found Radar's turtle in the shower three times in the past month. Henry suggests that the turtle is 'having an affair' with one of his corns. Radar's animal collection also includes racoons, rabbits, opossums and several other creatures.

6. What were the two foods Hawkeye was tired of eating? Fish and ____.

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' "Adam's Ribs"

Answer: Liver

They had fish and liver for eleven straight days. "I've eaten a river of liver and an ocean of fish!" says Hawkeye, moments before he started a riot in the mess tent.

7. Though they apparently seek several different items from the supply tent, what particular medicine to these thieves make their top priority?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'White Gold'

Answer: Penicillin

According to one of the thieves, the black market price of penicillin is '$150 a pop'. Not knowing the comparative prices of other medicines, it's not clear if this price is exceptionally extraordinary, but it seems like a lot for the early 1950s!

8. The top surgical staff are all called to Henry's office for some important business. It seems that an aid station needs some assistance from the M*A*S*H 4077th. Why is this so?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Aid Station'

Answer: A surgeon has been killed

Particularly, it's an 'I' Company aid station that has lost a surgeon. Until a replacement can be brought in, the 4077th has been asked to provide a cutter, a scrub nurse and a corpsman. Ah, but who will volunteer?

9. What exactly does Hawkeye do in retaliation for Frank's seemingly harmless violation of his space bubble?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'House Arrest'

Answer: Socks Frank in the face

Talk about your assymetrical retaliations! Frank's seemingly childish act is met by brute force from Hawkeye. This somewhat uncomfortable scene is reminiscent of a scene in the 1970 film 'MASH', where Trapper punches Frank after he had blamed an orderly for the death of a patient. In the scene in this episode, the reasoning for the punch seems much less justified.

10. In the O.R., the hospital staff works feverishly despite the bombing. One Spanish speaking nurse named Sanchez has a very difficult time with the situation, and screams quite a few times. Where is Nurse Sanchez from?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Bombed'

Answer: Costa Rica

Played by Louisa Moritz, this is Nurse Sanchez's only appearance on the show. According to my research, no Costa Rican citizens participated in the Korean War. However, it could be that Sanchez had immigrated to the United States, and then volunteered to serve in Korea.

11. During this episode, Father Mulcahy is caught up in a note he has received from his 'sister, the sister'. Apparently she is considering leaving her position as a nun. What is Mulcahy's sister's name?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Life with Father'

Answer: Kathy

Father Mulcahy's sister's given name is Kathy, but the Catholic name she has assumed is Maria Angelica. In her letter she suggests she might leave the order because she is considering becoming a mother. We also learn that she went to college on a basketball scholarship.

12. In the mess tent, the enlisted men are given a thorough physical examination by the doctors. What doctor gets stuck with 'turn your head and cough'?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Check-Up'

Answer: Frank

Hawkeye and Trapper have already established their positions in the 'assembly line', and they give Frank the dirtiest job. Most amusingly, Klinger is in line wearing on a skirt and a bra that is hanging from his shoulder.

13. Frank makes his grand entrance into the O.R. with his usual charming demeanor leading the way. He complains that some important and sentimental item of his has been stolen, but which ones?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'O.R.'

Answer: Scrub brush

Specifically, Frank apparently has a tortoise shell scrub brush that he uses before performing surgery. The brush was a gift of his mother, thus the sentimental feelings attached. No evidence is given as to the location of said scrub brush.

14. In Captain Spaulding's song about Tokyo, a tune that can be heard several times throughout the episode, what pair of Japanese things are mentioned in the lyrics?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Rainbow Bridge'

Answer: Sake and sashimi

For those of you who do not know, sake is a kind of fermented rice wine, while sashimi is simply raw fish. 'Oh, Tokyo, they got sake and sashimi and clean sheets, oh come on, oh', are lyrics heard numerous times during this particular episode.

15. Unfortunately for Trapper and Hawkeye, Henry Blake is off giving a lecture in Seoul, leaving the chinless Frank Burns in command. On what illustrious topic is Henry eloquently propounding, according to Hawkeye?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Alcoholics Unanimous'

Answer: Hemorrhoids

Trapper whines that he'd rather be hearing Henry's lecture in Seoul, to which Hawkeye responds, 'Colonel Blake reviews the military position on the hemorrhoid?' Off to the Swamp...

16. What was the name of the restaurant that Hawkeye ordered the ribs from?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' "Adam's Ribs"

Answer: Adam's Ribs

He said "They were ambrosia. When the gods on Olympus got tired of pizza they sent out for these ribs. I had a cut on my upper lip the sauce kept the scab alive, the pain was exquisite. They were better than sex. It's like making love to a xylophone."

17. When the thieves are discovered, they scatter, but one unfortunate individual among them remains in the compound, cornered by the various 4077th personnel. Klinger is able to apprehend the thief using what girlish item of clothing?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'White Gold'

Answer: Fur stole

During the ruckus, the young man is injured in the abdomen, an injury that requires that his belly be wrapped. His dog tags say that his name is Corporal Perkins, but they turn out to be stolen. This 'Perkins' is played by character actor Hilly Hicks.

18. Margaret is completely unnerved at the beginning of the episode, and why not, a certain Colonel Reese is coming to observe her work. When Reese arrives, where does she take her quarters?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'House Arrest'

Answer: Margaret's tent

Colonel Reese is very forward, quite jovial and apparently hungry for attention from the opposite sex. Classic Hollywood actress Mary Wickes, who appeared in such films as 'Now, Voyager' and 'White Christmas', does an excellent job as Colonel Reese here!

19. While Hawkeye and Trapper toil away in the O.R., the latrine is hit by a bomb. Henry Blake was in the latrine at the time. Who else was in there with him?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Bombed'

Answer: Father Mulcahy

The doctors pull Henry and Father Mulcahy from the wreckage. Both appear to be soiled, but okay. Apparently, it was a freshly dug latrine. Lucky for both of them!

20. Captain Spaulding, the guitar playing doctor of the 4077th during season three, makes yet another appearance in this episode. What is Spaulding's first name, as spoken by Hawkeye?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'There's Nothing Like a Nurse'

Answer: Calvin

Captain Calvin Spaulding is his full name. He's played by Loudon Wainwright III in this and two other season three episodes. In this episode he actually has a speaking part, along with his singing, and we see him performing in the O.R. as a surgeon.

21. Hawkeye has an unusual patient towards the beginning of the operating session, a soldier from Africa who can't seem to speak a lick of English. From what country does this soldier hail?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'O.R.'

Answer: Ethiopia

Ethiopia and South Africa were the only two African countries to send troops to Korea during the Korean War. This soldier speaks to Hawkeye twice in his native language, namely Amharic, but there is no translation of what he says. Hawkeye does make reference to 'Haile Salassie' (longtime emperor) in his comment back to the Ethiopian soldier.

22. General Kelly's aide-de-camp is one Colonel Wortman, an obsessively loyal, bald-pated military officer who is at the General's beck and call. Who very entertainingly portrays Wortman in this episode?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Iron Guts Kelly'

Answer: Keene Curtis

Keene Curtis played John Allen Hill, owner of Melville's, on the sitcom 'Cheers'. This was Curtis's only appearance on 'M*A*S*H', but what an appearance it was!

23. Happily on his way to Tokyo (or so he believes) is Hawkeye, who enjoys a manicure before he goes. Wearing a beautiful Asian-style dress, who carefully tends to Hawkeye's fingernails?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Rainbow Bridge'

Answer: Klinger

Sorry, this is something of a rotten trick question, but then, who wears more dresses on 'M*A*S*H' than Maxwell Q. Klinger? Trapper is also being attended to, by the Bobbie Mitchell, who played Nurses Mason, Marshall, Murphy, Gilbert, Lyons, Albe, Baker and Gage in other episodes. That has to be a 'M*A*S*H' record.

24. After Hawkeye finally finishes paying the enlisted personnel and Radar pays the officers, Hawkeye makes himself a hot dog. After he smells it,he puts it down. He then informs Radar there's some leftover money. How much is leftover?

From Quiz "M*A*S*H" - "Pay Day"

Answer: $10

Hawkeye tells Radar to do whatever he wants with the leftover money. Radar tells Hawkeye that whenever there are leftover funds certain forms have to be filled out. Hawkeye ignores this rule and tells Radar no way. Did you ever notice Hawkeye always smelled his food before he ate it? He even made BJ smell his food once!

25. While signing the papers that Radar has provided for him, Hawkeye notices a 'scratch' on Radar's body that turns out to be a bite mark from a dog. On which body part has Radar received this bite?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Mad Dogs and Servicemen'

Answer: Hand

Hawkeye inquires about the 'scratch', and Radar explains that it is not a scratch, but rather the remnant of a bite from a 'mutt' that Radar was feeding from kitchen scraps. Hawkeye immediately suggests that Radar might be in danger of contracting rabies from the dog, and insists that Radar find the animal.

26. The scene shifts to the Swamp, where we find Radar dismantling the still on Frank's orders. Radar is really unhappy about having to deconstruct the still, and quotes Hawkeye, who claims the contraption is his...?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Alcoholics Unanimous'

Answer: Wellspring of life

According to Radar, 'Captain Pierce says it (the still) is his 'wellspring of life'.'! Frank responds, 'Oh that's just something he read in 'Cosmopolitan'.' (Whatever that means!) Trapper and Hawkeye enter the Swamp just in time to save their wellspring. They sample the still's product, to be sure its quality has not been compromised. Hawkeye calls the gin 'mother's milk', while Trapper refers to it as 'nectar of the gods'.

27. While in the operating room, where our favorite M*A*S*H doctors perform emergency surgery on a collection of Greek soldiers, Trapper explicates eloquently on which great of ancient medicine?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Private Charles Lamb'

Answer: Hippocrates

According to Hawkeye's letter to his father, the M*A*S*H doctors have 'spent the better part of a whole day mending the heirs to Plato, Plutarch, Aristotle and Socrates.' Trapper then discusses Hippocrates, who he says was 'born in 460' and 'wrote treatises on medicine and handed down concepts that are still used today.' Frank then mentions the Hippocratic Oath, showing that he actually stayed awake for at least part of his medical school! The doctors of the 4077th are indeed well-schooled...

28. One of the greatest 'M*A*S*H' speeches of all time takes place during this mess tent scene, with Hawkeye brilliantly defying the cooks who dare to serve which two offending items time and again?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'Adam's Rib'

Answer: Liver and fish

The famous 'liver/fish' speech takes place in this episode. Here's an excerpt, 'I simply cannot eat the same food every day! Fish, liver, day after day! I've eaten a river of liver and an ocean of fish! I've eaten so much fish I'm ready to grow gills! I've eaten so much liver I can only make love if I'm smothered in bacon and onions!'

29. In which city was the restaurant that he sent for ribs from?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' "Adam's Ribs"

Answer: Chicago

If you're a big 'M*A*S*H' fan you should know that Mill Valley is where BJ is from, and Boston is where Charles is from, and although it was Hawkeye's favorite restaurant, it is not in his hometown.

30. This episode marks the fourth appearance of Edward Winter, who we 'M*A*S*H' fans know better as Colonel Sam Flagg. What does Flagg claim his name is in this episode?

From Quiz 'M*A*S*H' - 'White Gold'

Answer: Captain Goldberg

In this episode, the ever-imaginative Flagg is once again playing dress-up, this time as a Jewish rabbi named Goldberg. This was Winter's fourth appearance on the show, and third as Flagg (the first time he appeared was as a certain Captain Halloran).
