Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did Tate think was partially responsible for her mutation?

Answer: Mother

Several Remnants were mutated during the five-hundred year trip through space. Tate was one of them. She became the Mouth at will, sometimes not at will. She grew powerful and saw red. Her mouth grew extremely large, as well. Tate wondered if Mother was partly to blame for the mutation because the ship was very meddlesome. Mother changed Kubrick, as well.
2. What food did Yago desire?

Answer: Soda and ice cream

Because Yago had abandoned Billy on Earth, he had no food or water. They disappeared along with Billy. But Amelia had assured Yago he'd be taken care of. His throat was parched and he wanted soda and soft-serve ice cream. The Troika were hungry, too, but they preferred flesh for food.
3. What was Tate's dog named back on Earth?

Answer: Lily

Tate grew extremely depressed when she realized it was too late to save the Remnants abandoned on Earth. She ventured to the basement of Mother and sat against a wall and told herself she was saving her energy for destroying Amelia. But she just sat and wept. She admitted to herself she wished she'd been left on Earth, in her apartment with her dog Lily.
4. What made Tate break down and cry?

Answer: She realized she could be the last human alive

No one came after Tate after Mother left Earth. Tate assumed it was because Amelia, Duncan, Charlie, and Yago could have died. The Remnants on Earth were mostly without food or water, so they would die eventually. She broke down and cried when she thought that she was the last human being alive in the universe.
5. When Tate sat in Mother's receptors, what happened?

Answer: She was tortured

Mother expressed her feelings to Tate by playing depressing memories in her head. Tate saw her mother's funeral, dead pets, things that represented grief and abandonment. Mother told Tate she missed Billy. Next, Mother drew up Tate's memories that stood as anger, like bullies of her childhood.

Then Mother made Tate feel pain. Tate was stuck in the chair receiving pain, loss, and anger for an unknown time.
6. What did the Troika do to Mother?

Answer: They poisoned her

Mother showed Tate exactly what had happened to her. Duncan injected a poison that made Mother sick. The ship began to lose all of its memories, and since it had the ability to feel emotions, it grew even sadder. The Troika did this to make Mother easier to control for their own selfish needs. Mother became a simpler machine called Daughter.
7. What happened to Tate every time she ate something?

Answer: She would grow very sleepy and sluggish

After Tate called out the Mouth and devoured Yago, Tate sat and rested. She slept for a while, dreaming of seeing the Earth brought back to life. She saw green grass and life on this new Earth. She even saw what she knew was Job's daughter. After she ate Amelia, she grew sleepy again and this time in her dreams, she saw the people still living on Earth.
8. What did Tate learn the Source was?

Answer: Mother/Herself

In one of her dreams, Tate saw a band of dirt-encrusted people walking on Earth. She felt their fear as they walked toward the Source. Finally, Tate was able to see the immense ship that was Mother. Tate looked again at the humans kneeling before Mother and saw Violet and some of the others.
9. Where were the Troika headed?

Answer: Attbi

Yago told Tate that Duncan, Amelia, and Charlie had altered Mother's course to take them to an unknown planet. This planet, called Attbi, would take a long time to reach. The Troika feasted on the cells of all of the remaining Riders and Blue Meanies, but hungered for more.

In Attbi, they planned on eating everything. Later, when Tate explored the universe, she learned that Attbi was completely empty.
10. The story began with five people in Mother. How many survived the story?

Answer: Zero

Even though Charlie, Amelia, and Yago were eaten by Tate, they lived on inside her head. Duncan was killed by Daughter and indirectly by Tate. She had Daughter isolate his evolved body and sent him out into the vacuum of space. When Charlie took over Tate's body, the others agreed to quiet themselves so he would lose his mind.

He ended up just fading away. Yago died an old man inside of Tate. He had changed from the spoiled power-seeker he once was. Both Amelia and Tate died nobly delivering Mother to the rest of the Remnants.
