Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the story's beginning, what occupation did Sookie have?

Answer: waitress

Sookie was a waitress at Merlotte's in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Her boss, Sam, had a secret to reveal late into the story.
2. Which description for Sookie is incorrect?

Answer: vampire

Sookie's special power, which she called a disability, was to read people's thoughts. Sometimes she could actually hear the words in their heads, but more often she could get a sense of their emotion and general state of being. Later, after she had some vampire blood in her system, her ability to hear the exact words improved dramatically.
3. In the grand tradition of starting out most supernatural book series with a murderer, what type of person was being targeted by the killer in "Dead Until Dark"?

Answer: lower class women who'd had affairs with vampires

The killer in this novel targeted these women, described in his own mind as low class vampire daters. As is true with most serial killers, this man had a stresser that started off the series of murders in and around Bon Temps. His own sister, Cindy, had led a lower class life-style, which eventually led her to a vampire lover.

When her brother begged her to end the relationship before she died, she refused him. He lost control and killed her. In his mind, he saw all women who dated vamps as deserving of death.
4. Sookie saved Bill's life after she first met him in Merlotte's.

Answer: True

She saved him after reading the minds of two other bar patrons. These two folks, Mack and Denise Rattray, had been jailed for draining vampire blood. In the series, vampires had come "out of the coffin" and were allowed to be citizens with legal rights. Vampire draining, or killing outright, was against the law. Sookie followed Bill and the Rattrays out of the bar, and saved Bill from them.

He later repaid her this, when the Rattrays attacked her outside of the bar after work. Bill killed the couple, and made it appear as though a tornado had hit their mobile home.
5. Which of the choices names three women killed by our serial killer in this novel?

Answer: Maudette, Dawn, Amy

All three of these women had bite marks on their bodies, which suggested a possible vampire murder. It turned out that none of the women had been drained of blood, and Bill told Sookie a vampire would not have wasted them that way. The bites on Maudette and Dawn were older, but Amy's had been fresher, and she was the last one killed. Before Amy's death, the killer had come for Sookie as well, but instead killed her grandmother. Sookie and her brother Jason had been raised by their paternal grandmother after their parents died eighteen years prior.
6. Who did it appear was being framed for the serial killings in Bon Temps?

Answer: Jason Stackhouse, Sookie's brother

Jason had a relationship with all of the deceased women, as he was shown to be a real ladies' man. Jason, a love them and leave them type, also made videos of himself with Maudette and Dawn. He was arrested after Amy's murder, as he had been with her in the moments before her death and remembered nothing. Sookie and Sam found him asleep in his truck in the bar parking lot.
7. Name the huge, blonde, old male vampire Sookie met at Fangtasia.

Answer: Eric

Eric may have been the owner of this vampire club, but I cannot recall reading that one way or the other. At any rate, he certainly acted and appeared as though he was the owner. Sookie and Bill went there to shop around photos of Dawn and Maudette, and see if anyone recognized them. Eric and Pam were helpful in this regard, as was the bartender. Eric took an instant interest in Sookie, while Bill made it clear that she belonged to him.

The pair went back to Fangtasia later in the book to help Eric discover who'd stolen $60,000 from him.

It turned out to be his long time pal, and bartender, Long Shadow. Eric saved Sookie's life when the culprit attacked her, and she ingested even more vampire blood as he died on top of her.
8. What secret did Sam eventually reveal to Sookie?

Answer: he was a shape-shifter

Sam, who'd employed Sookie for several years, had never shown much interest in her romantically. He really started to show it after Bill came along and Sookie fell for him instead. Later, when Bill was in New Orleans, Sam turned himself into a Collie dog and followed Sookie home to watch over her.

When they woke up the next day, he was Sam again. He told her when the moon was full, he had to become an animal. Other times he could do it by choice and much concentration, and he turned into the last animal he'd seen.

He kept the picture of the Collie by his bed, to prevent from turning into something else.
9. When Bill left for New Orleans, he installed another vampire to watch over Sookie. What was this vampire's chosen name?

Answer: Bubba

Bubba was dim-witted, but strong and patient. He sat just inside the woods and watched the house for Sookie's well being. In the obvious description of Bubba's real identity, Charlaine Harris left no doubt that this vampire was once the human being, and rock star, named Elvis Presley.
10. Which person turned out to be the town's serial killer?

Answer: Rene Lenier

Rene, Arlene's husband, was the one killing all of the vamp loving women in Bon Temps. In the final showdown with Sookie, she could feel and see all of the things he'd done to his sister, Dawn, Maudette and her grandmother. She fought him in the cemetery and stabbed him with his own knife. He lived, and in the process broke her ribs, nose and collarbone. She was able to get inside Bill's house and call 9-1-1 before she slipped into unconsciousness. Rene confessed to all of his killings, and Jason Stackhouse was off of the hook. In the end, Sookie refused Bill's aid in healing, as she feared she already changed too much from the vampire blood.
