1. What is the werecat's name?

Answer: Solembum

Eragon reaches for a wooden rod. Solembum says "That wouldn't be wise". Eragon thinks it is Saphira so he tells the werecat to stop playing games. Then he touches the rod and gets electrocuted and Solembum says he did warn Eragon. Eragon realizes that Solembum's talking and Solembum introduces himself.

2. What does 'Garjzla' mean?

Answer: Light

The Shade uses 'Garjzla' in the Prologue to stop Arya. It tells you what 'Garjzla' means in the Ancient Language guide in the back of the book.

3. How many cities are named in the book?

Answer: eight

They are Carvahall, Threshinford, Yazuac, Daret, Teirm, Dras-Leona and Gil'ead. And there is also Tronjheim where the dwarves and Varden live.

4. What are the words that Eragon uses to protect his sword?

Answer: Geuloth du knifr

It means dull the sword. After sparring with sticks Brom decides it's time to use swords. Eragon says they'll cut each other to ribbons so Brom uses these words so the edges get blunter. He teaches Eragon how to do it and then later on Eragon teaches Murtagh.

5. What was Durza's original name?

Answer: Carsaib

When Eragon finds himself in Durza's memory, he finds Durza's name was Carsaib, the name his mother crooned while combing his hair. After the deaths of his parents, he went in the desert. A man called Haeg found Carsaib and adopted him. One day bandits attacked and killed Haeg. He screamed "I am Durza".

6. What is Saphira's first word?

Answer: Eragon

At the end of the chapter 'Awakening' Saphira talks to Eragon in his head. She says 'Eragon'. Eragon didn't like it so he raced home trying to escape the sound.

7. How many elves are in the prologue?

Answer: Two male, one female

Their names are Arya, Faolin and Glenwing. They were ambushed by Durza and twelve Urgals. Faolin and Glenwing were killed by Urgals. Arya was captured by Durza and brought to Gil'ead where she was tortured.

8. Seithr means 'invoke'.

Answer: False

According to the Ancient Language guide at the back of the book, seithr means 'witch'. Ethgri means invoke in the Ancient Language.

9. How many people have survived slaying a Shade?

Answer: three

If you thought two, you are forgetting Eragon. He killed Durza. The other two are called Laetri the Elf and Irnstad the Rider. You can only kill a Shade by thrusting it through the heart which is why Shades are so incredibly difficult to kill.

10. Is Angela a nurse?

Answer: No

She is a herbalist/witch. Eragon meets her in Teirm. She also appears later in Tronjheim and she saves Eragon's life in the battle under Farthen Dur.
