Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wedge did not have a name for his new squadron, so he held a competition for a new name. Who thought of the name "Wraith" for the new squadron?

Answer: Tyria Sarkin

Wedge held a competition for a new name, with the prize being a three-day leave.

Tyria described wraiths as, "Dark things that come in the night for you" (p. 95), which she and the rest of the squadron felt as an appropriate description.

"Silly", "Rogue", and "Dinner" were also proposed as new names by Garik Loran. Kell and Runt called in as Dinner and Silly after they humiliated Admiral Apwar Trigit.
2. Before a new name was chosen, Wedge's new squadron was given a boring temporary name. What was Wraith Squadron's original name?

Answer: Gray Squadron

The new squadron was given the temporary name "Gray Squadron". Blue Squadron was the training A-wing squadron that was on Folor with Wraiths. There was a lot of rivalry between the two squadrons.

Even after the Wraiths got their permanent name, gray remained their unit color.
3. Unlike Rogue Squadron, lots of the new pilots in Wraith Squadron had nicknames. What was Garik Loran's nickname?

Answer: Face

Garik Loran was an Imperial child actor, and made many holodramas that helped boost Imperial recruitment. He gained the nickname "The Face" for his appearance.

A rogue Rebel Alliance cell kidnapped Face at a young age, where he learned about the atrocities of the Empire. When stormtroopers attacked and killed the kidnappers, Face was assumed killed. He secretly survived, and lived a much quieter life, taking up piloting.

He gained a scar across his face during the attack, and opted to not have it removed. It served as a reminder to himself of what he had helped the Empire do.
4. Each X-Wing pilot had his or her own astromech droid that flew with them. These little droids helped their pilots, and often developed personalities of their own. What did Kell Tainer name his astromech?

Answer: Thirteen

Kell's R2 unit originally had a glitch that caused to respond with 13 whenever asked for a random number. Grinder was able to fix the glitch, but Kell named the droid thirteen. When Wraith Squadron was ambushed on their way to Xobome, all their droids' memories were reset. Thirteen became R2-D609 and returned 13 when asked for a random number.

Wedge had a droid named Mynock because it would screech in battle. In "The Bacta War" he had the droid's memory wiped and upgraded. The new droid's designation was R5-G8, which Wedge just shortened to Gate.

Shiner was Myn Donnos' astromech, and Vape was Face's astromech.
5. Which squadron did Myn Donos fly in before he joined Wraith Squadron?

Answer: Talon Squadron

While the Rogues were off dealing with Isard, Wes Janson and Hobbie were busy training new X-wing squadrons. One of them was Talon Squadron, which was led by Myn Donos.

Talon was on a mission on Graven 7, which turned out to be a trap. Everyone under Myn's command died in a matter of minutes.

Myn grew a strong attachment to Shiner, his astromech, as the last survivor of Talon Squadron. When Shiner was offline after the ambush at Xobome, Myn became panicked. When Shiner was destroyed during the attack on the Blood Nest pirate base, Myn shut down almost entirely.

The Tierfon Yellow Aces was the first squadron Wes Janson flew in.
6. While the Wraiths did have a crew of mechanics, led by Cubber Daine, to keep their X-wings in top shape, sometimes they needed repair in the field. Who in the squadron was the designated mechanic?

Answer: Kell Tainer

When Kell was not flying, he was often asked or ordered to help the mechanics. He instantly bonded with them, and was even invited to their Sabacc games.

Kell was originally part of a New Republic commando unit where he was responsible for demolitions. This made him the demolitions expert and the hand-to-hand combat expert in Wraith Squadron.
7. What kind of pilots was Wraith Squadron composed of?

Answer: Drop outs and rejects

Part of the Wedge's selling point on creating a new squadron was doing it for very cheap. Instead of getting new pilots whose academy training would cost hundreds of thousands of credits, Wedge wanted pilots that had already been trained, but who had also fouled up in some way. Pilots looking for one last chance.
8. Who was the squadron's quartermaster?

Answer: Squeaky

Squeaky was a 3PO, similar to C-3PO seen in the "Star Wars" movies. Squeaky was unique in that he was not owned by anyone, and was employed by the New Republic the way any sentient would. He had a unique personality and did not suffer disrespect well. He originally worked at the Tapcaf on Folor called Downtime, but was recruited by Wedge to be his squadron's new quartermaster.

M-3PO is a type of 3PO unit that specialized in military protocol. Emtrey, the Rogue Squadron quartermaster, was an M-3PO unit. Emkay was the personal droid of Ace Azzameen from the "X-Wing Alliance" computer game.
9. What type of squadron was Wraith Squadron?

Answer: Fighter/commando hybrid squadron

When Wedge reformed Rogue Squadron in "X-wing: Rogue Squadron", when faced with pilots of equal ability, he went with the one that had more potential for commando operations, making a fighter unit that could also work on the ground.

With his new squadron, Wedge wanted to focus on candidates' commando skills first.

With a large squadron of very different members with very different skill sets, the Wraiths became exceptional at coming up with inventive ways of tackling problems, and then succeeding.
10. What was the Pig Trough?

Answer: A canyon

The Pig Trough was a long natural canyon on Folor that the New Republic used to train their new fighter squadrons. Wraith Squadron and Blue Squadron both used the Pig Trough for training drills. When Admiral Apwar Trigit attacked Folor, Kell, Runt, and Blue Nine, and Ten used the cover of the Pig Trough to sneak closer to the incoming Star Destroyer without being detected.

Folor was where Wedge trained the reformed Rogue Squadron in Michael A. Stachpole's first "X-wing" book. The Rogues also used the Pig Trough during their training.
