1996 Women's Gymnastics Trivia Quiz

Answer: Amanda Borden

Amanda sat out of bars and vault during the team competition. Only six athletes from each team could compete on each apparatus. Amanda was never a standout on bars or vault, so the team decided that she would sit out.

Jaycie Phelps fell off on a jump. She fell on the same move that Simona Amanar of Romania missed. The United States team still won, and Jaycie had other shaky performances and would not have qualified for the individual all-around competition anyway, so the fall did not have a big effect on the competition.

Shannon had the highest beam score and overall total after day one. Shannon also had the highest overall total with the two days combined although Dominique Dawes had the highest total score in the optionals competition.

Amy tied with a Chinese gymnast for the silver. Svetlana Khorkina won the event, and Dominique Dawes finished in fourth.

Kerri couldn't compete because she was still injured after the vault in the team competition. Shannon had a significant error in the team competition on floor and didn't make the finals.

Amanda competed at the 1992 Olympic Trials but failed to make the team. Jaycie and Amy hadn't yet emerged on the international scene in 1992. Kerri was the youngest member of the 1992 team, and Bela Karolyi nicknamed her, "the baby."

Mary Lee Tracy along with Marta Karolyi were the team coaches. Tracy was the personal coach of both Borden and Phelps, and Marta helped Bela as the personal coach of Moceanu and Strug. Bela Karolyi was reportedly very upset at not being named an official coach.

Strug retired after the 1996 games. Miller and Moceanu both hoped to return to the 2000 team, but an injury prevented Moceanu from competing in the trials, and Miller had to withdraw from the trials midway through because of an injury.

Russia won the silver medal which was very disappointing for the team. Romania won the bronze and was also very disappointed, and of course, everybody knows, team USA won the gold.

Amanda went first and hit a great routine. Jaycie followed Amanda and did well but looked a little shaky. Shannon had the routine of a lifetime which she repeated twice more before becoming the balance beam champion in the event finals.
