In 2008 the domestic competitions in Australia and New Zealand merged to form one competition. The old name of the Perth Orioles was retired and the Western Australian team was re-named as West Coast Fever.

Western Australia joined the Sheffield Shield national cricket competition in the 1947/48 season. They became the Western Warriors for the start of the 1996/97 season. Due to sponsorship reasons, they are also known as the Retravision Warriors.

The Victorian Football League (VFL) became the Australian Football League (AFL) in 1997 when it included 2 new teams from outside of Victoria. This included the West Coast Eagles, who were formed in 1986. They are one of the most successful clubs to have ever played in the VFL/AFL.

In 1996 The Fremantle Dockers were the 15th team to join the AFL competition. They consistently have one of the highest memberships in the competition despite never having won a premiership.

The Women's National Hockey League (WNHL) changed to the Australian Hockey League (AHL) in 2000 to move into line with the men's hockey competition.
The Diamonds were part of the original WNHL in 1993 as the WAIS (WA Institute of Sport) Diamonds. They have since been known as the WA Diamonds and are currently known as the SmokeFree WA Diamonds (sponsored by SmokeFree).

The Thundersticks have been a part of the National Hockey League since 1992. They were originally known as the Perth Thundersticks then in 1993 changed to WAIS (WA Institute of Sport) Thundersticks and in 1995 the team was known again as the Perth Thundersticks. Since 2002 the team has been known as the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks (sponsored by SmokeFree).
The name of the competition changed to the Australian Hockey League (AHL) in 2000.

Western Force entered the international Super 14 competition in 2006. They were the fourth Australian team to join the competition and beat a bid from Rugby Union Victoria to create the new Super 14 team.

Perth Heat were foundation members of the ABL (Australian Baseball League) which no longer exists. Perth Heat now play in the Australia-wide Claxton Shield competition.

The Perth Wildcats were formed in 1982 as the Westate Wildcats. The name was changed to the Perth Wildcats in 1984. They made their first playoffs in 1987 and made it as far as the grand final, but lost. They haven't missed a playoffs series since 1987.

The WA Reds were founded in 1992 as the Western Reds. They joined the ARL competition in 1995 then moved to the Super League in 1997 (as the Perth Reds). The club collapsed after the end of the 1997 Super League season and re-established themselves as the WA Reds in order to join the ARL in 2006.
