Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. About how much time passed between the first scene and most of the action in "The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos"?

Answer: 3400 years

According to the title card after the first scene, it was precisely 3407 years. Delph and Andinio were powerful psychics who had spent all that time serving a mysterious "creator" and doing some pretty horrific things in his service. The Ux apparently are an extremely long lived species, even by Time Lord standards,
2. What was the name of the ship commander played by Mark Addy?

Answer: Paltraki

His name was Paltraki, a fact he had forgotten when he first met the Doctor. The Doctor gave the befuddled captain a neural blocker, which allowed him to regain his memories. He soon remembered that his crew had been kidnapped, leading Graham and Ryan to rescue them.

Captain Jack Harkness is an immortal rogue played by John Barrowman. Henry Avery was the pirate captain in "The Curse of the Black Spot" (2011). Captain Mike Yates was a member of UNIT during the time of the Third and Fourth Doctor.
3. What race did Andinio and Delph belong to?

Answer: Ux

They were part of a race that was so powerful they could use their minds to change the nature of reality. They were a highly religious race, driven to use their powers to serve a creator.

The Thals were the peaceful race on the planet Skaro, home world of the Daleks. The Stenza have been the big bad of series 11, first showing up in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" (2018). They are a warrior race who collect teeth as trophies.

The Daleks are the earliest (late 1963) and most persistent of the Doctor's enemies. The Doctor has fought the Daleks in many times and places - indeed, given the Time War he may have fought them every time in every place. They did not show up during the ten episodes of Series 11.
4. What planet was the captain of the space ship in "Battle of Raskoor Av Kolos" from?

Answer: Stebble

Captain Paltraki was from the planet Stebble. He doesn't really say much about his home planet, preferring to discuss the unusual nature of the name Earth for Yaz's planet.

Sto is the home of Astrid Peth, the doomed hostess in "Voyage of the Damned" (2007). Stormcage is a prison planet, the most secure in the galaxy, unless you happen to be River Song. Strepto is on the 27 planets that was stolen by Davros in "The Stolen Earth" (2008).
5. What character from earlier in Series 11 returned in "The Battle of Raskoor Av Kolos?"

Answer: Tzim-Sha

It was the Stenza warrior Tzim-Sha, who was bearing quite a grudge over the Doctor thwarting his plans to become the leader of the Stenza. In revenge, "Tim Shaw" hatched an elaborate plan to destroy the Earth using the Ux and Stenza technology.

Actor Samuel Oatley returned as Tzim-Sha. He has acted in a variety of television shows since 2005, including multiple appearances on the comedy show "Witless" (2016). It is hard to make
out what he looks like under all the blue makeup and teeth.

Krasko was the alien who attempted to short-circuit the civil rights movement in "Rosa" (2018). Jack Robertson was the Trump-like real estate magnate in "Arachnids in the UK" (2018).

Umbreen Khan is Yaz's grandmother, who we met in "Demons of the Punjab" (2018).
6. What did the crystals contain?

Answer: compressed planets

It turns out that one of Tzim-Sha's hobbies was compressing planets down to the size of large crystals. As the Doctor pointed out, that would kill every living thing, resulting in planetary genocide.

The crystals began to fracture and release the planets. Fortunately, the Doctor was able to use the psychic powers of the Ux and the trans-dimensional engineering of the TARDIS to return the planets to their proper place in the universe.

The Pting was the super fast gremlin like creature that ate virtually anything in "The Tsurunga Conundrum" (2018). Actually, it would have been handy. It probably could have eaten the crystals.
7. When Graham shot the Stenza warrior, what part did he hit?

Answer: his foot

Graham had been seriously tempted to kill Tzim-Shaw, who was responsible for the death of his wife Grace. Graham decided to be the better man and wound up only shooting Tzim-Sha in the foot. Graham and Ryan locked Tzim-Sha into a stasis cube, where he will have a long time to consider all of the horrible things he has done.
8. When he blew up the robots, Graham used a line from what 1980s action film?

Answer: Die Hard

Graham threw a grenade and said "Yippie Ki-Ya, Robots", which is a direct reference to the 1988 Bruce Willis thriller "Die Hard." Given his quote from "Pulp Fiction" (1994), we have established that Graham is a fan of action films.
9. According to the Doctor, what does "Ranskoor Av Kolos" translate as?

Answer: Disintegrator of Souls

The Doctor stated it meant "disintegrator of souls." So naturally, they went for a visit. Given that "Tim Shaw" had been using the planet to crush planets in order to built a super weapon that would destroy Earth, the name was well earned.
10. Who wrote the series 11 episode "The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos"?

Answer: Chris Chibnall

Chris Chibnall is the showrunner for "Doctor Who" this season. He has been active in British television since 2000. He was the creator of the crime drama "Broadchurch", where he worked with the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. Previously, Chibnall was the showrunner for the British version of "Law and Order," where he worked with Bradley Walsh (Graham).
Chibnall wrote a majority of the episodes this season.

Jamie Childs has directed several episodes of "Doctor Who" during series 11, including "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" and "Demons of the Punjab" (both 2018). Childs is fairly new to directing, working on the shows "Vera" (2016-17) and "Next of Kin" (2018). Childs got his start in television working on the historical drama "Poldark" (2015).

Veteran character actor Mark Addy played Paltraki in "Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos" (2018). Addy behan acting in 1987, and has been in a wide range of television shows and films. He is probably most famous as Dave in "The Full Monty" (1997). "Game of Thrones" fans know him as Robert Baratheon. Addy often plays police officers.

Segun Akinola is the composer who has written most of the music for Series 11. He began working for the BBC in 2015. Akinola is an honors graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and earned his Masters in music composition from the National Film and Television School.
