Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What planetary system are the Doctor and the companions in at the start of "The Tsuranga Conundrum"?

Answer: Seffulin

They are in the Seffulin system. The Doctor suspects they are on Seffulin 27. They are scavenging for something unspecified, when they uncover a sonic mine which detonates. They wake up inside a hospital.

Segonax was the scene of the Seventh Doctor story "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy" (1988-89). Saturnyne was the home planet of the vampire fish creatures in the Eleventh Doctor Adventure "Vampires of Venice" (2010). Messaline was the setting for the Tenth Doctor adventure "The Doctor's Daughter" (2008).
2. What is Tsurunga?

Answer: a spaceship

The Tsuranga is a spaceship, a medical transport vehicle which travels the around picking up passengers and transferring them to a hospital space station. It is run by an anti-matter engine, which the Doctor marvels at.
3. What century does "The Tsuranga Conundrum" take place in?

Answer: 67th Century

The Doctor asks what century they are in, and discovers it is the 67th century. Considering that none of the passengers seemed to be human, it is odd they would use Earth's calendar, but since it's "Doctor Who" let's not ponder too deeply.

The 67th Century seems a quite advanced place to live in. Along with the anti-matter drive system, it has complex sensors and the ship drives itself.
4. What is the name of the evil chipmunk creature in "The Tsuranga Conundrum"?

Answer: Pting

The Pting are a rather nasty race: They are incredibly fast, cannot be touched because their skin is toxic, and eat virtually everything, so they are incapable of being caged for any significant period of time. They look as if an Adipose mated with a chipmunk.

The Doctor deduces that the Pting is attracted to energy (the creature eats the sonic screwdriver among other things), so she uses the self-destruct mechanism in the ship to lure the Pting. It swallows the bomb and absorbs all the energy before the Doctor sends it flying off into space.

The Adipose were the fat creatures in "Partners in Crime" (2008). The Krafayis was the creature in "Vincent and the Doctor" (2010). The Ood are the servant race first seen in "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit" (2006).
5. What types of drugs is General Cicero taking?

Answer: adrenaline blockers

She is taking adrenaline blockers to treat "Pilot's Heart" apparently a disease that occurs among pilots of spacecraft in the future. Adrenaline blockers (commonly known as beta blockers) are a real class of drug, frequently used by heart patients to reduce stress on the heart and by psychiatric patients to reduce anxiety.

General Eva Cicero was played by Welsh actress Suzanne Packer. She is best known for playing nurse Sister Tess Bateman on the medical drama "Casualty" (2003-2015).
6. According to Ryan, how did his mother die?

Answer: heart attack

Ryan's mom died of a heart attack when he was 13. He was the one who discovered her body. Ryan's grandmother died when she fell off a building. For some reason, Ryan opens up to Yaz as they are facing death on the spaceship.
7. What show did Graham admit having binge watched?

Answer: Call the Midwife

Graham admitted to being a "Call the Midwife" fan, something that Ryan found surprising. Given that they were in the middle of a delivery, it actually seemed like it might come in handy. Although Graham did look away during the gory parts of "Call the Midwife."

"Call the Midwife" began in 2012, and explores the lives of British midwives in a poor section of London. The series began in 1957, although much is set in the 1960s. The show stars Stephen McGann, brother of Eighth Doctor Paul McGann as a doctor.

"Father Brown" (began 2013) is about a crime-solving Catholic priest. "Peaky Blinders" (began 2013) is about youth gangs in 1920s Birmingham. "Sherlock" (began 2010) stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the legendary detective; it was created by "Doctor Who" show runner Steven Moffat.
8. What was Yoss thinking of naming his new son

Answer: Avocado pear

Yoss had the idea that "Avocado Pear" was the name of an Earth hero. Graham and Ryan straightened him out on that, and suggested he use the names Graham and Ryan. Yoss said their names would make his son a laughingstock.

The avocado is a fruit that grows in Central and South America. It is used to create sauces such as guacamole. Zea Mays is the scientific name for corn. Sisal is a fiber plant native to Cental America, used for rope and clothing. Theobroma Cacao is the scientific name for cacao plants, the source of chocolate.
9. What space station were the Doctor and the companions on at the end of "The Tsuranga Conundrum"?

Answer: Resus One

The episode closed with them aboard Resus One, a hospital station. They mourned the loss of General Cicero, a legendary military commander. The space station was mentioned repeatedly throughout the episode, as it controlled the flight of the spaceship (as well as the means of blowing up the spaceship).

Satellite Five appears in the Ninth Doctor adventure "The Long Game" (2005). Platform One is also a Ninth Doctor venue, viewing station for the destruction of Earth in "The End of the World" (2005). Space Station W3 appears in the Second Doctor adventure "The Wheel in Space" (1968).
10. Who directed the series 11 "Doctor Who" episode "The Tsuranga Conundrum"?

Answer: Jennifer Perrott

Jennifer Perrott directed the episode, which was written by Chris Chibnall. This is her first work for "Doctor Who". Perrott started directing around 2005, and has worked on "Home and Away" (2013), "Echo Beach" (2008) and "Doctors" (2005-2007) among other things.

Suzanne Packer played legendary pilot/general Eve Cicero.

Lois Chimimba played Mabli, the medical technician. She is fairly new to acting, but has done several television shows. She appeared with Jodie Whittaker in the 2017 mini-series "Trust Me."

David Shields played Ronan the android. He is probably best known as Colin Tennant on "The Crown" (2016).
