Subject: Books that make you cry

I like reading sad books, especially books with sad endings, I recently read a book about a troublesome boy who starts to bond with his foster mother only to find she is dying of cancer. I can't remember the name of the book. What books have made you cry?

A Tale of Two Cities is one of the best, but it has a tear jerker ending.

The Picture of Dorian Gray makes me so emotional I havent been able to finish it again. It makes me really sad, because a young mans pride destroys him.

Andrew Vachss' Burke series are rough books that provoke very strong emotion responses in me.

I try to avoid books that make me cry. There seems to be enough sorrow and hardship in real life, that if I'm going to take the time to read a book, I want to fell good at the end.
Though, yes, there are many good books that are worth shedding a few tears (or a lot of tears) for the sake of a good story.
Anne of Green Gables, For One More Day, as well as many already mentioned, etc.

This may be a little late, but I noticed this message board while on a quest for a new book to make me sob...and I have one that nobody has yet to mention. A God-Shaped Hole, by Tiffanie DeBartolo. Not only did I cry, and I don't usually get so emotional, but I could not catch my breath, and had to read lines in between the tears...I recommend this to anyone looking for a great book with the added benefit of cleaning out your sinuses. Happy reading.

Robinton's death in 'All The Weyrs of Pern' usually makes me cry, and also in 'Test of the Twins' by Weis and Hickman, right at the end when "the voice said "Look Raist, bunnies" and his soul is saved, I just sob every.single.time.
The other one that springs to mind is 'On The Beach', I start crying about the middle and by the end am sobbing my eyes out, it is just so moving, and I think the only book I've ever read where everyone is dead at the end - no-one is left, no future, no hope, nothing.
HP7 made me cry last week too, I ran the whole gamut of emotion reading it, I laughed, cried, shouted abuse at JKR, cheered wildly through tears - I couldn't get over how good it was.

The two bits of books that always make me cry are the last page of A Tale of Two Cities and the last chapter of Rilla of Ingleside (in the Anne of Green Gables series) when Dog Monday welcomes Jem home. There are a couple of places in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where I've cried both times I've read it, but I haven't given it enough re-reads to say it always makes me cry. The same for Dumbledore's death in Half Blood Prince.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Yeah, I suppose that it is sad - to see how quickly there is a moral breakdown on the island.
