I received a message from a cruciverbalist seeking clarification about Contract #230: "For this challenge, does your zodiac sign have to be a clue or can it be an answer?" I was asked whether my most recent contract was requiring the use of a certain number of two-letter homophones. It does not. In the example I gave, "be" would not be a required word. I had considered requiring a certain number of two-letter homophones, but I assumed this might not be approved by the crossword editors. My understanding is that two-letter words in general are, while not outright prohibited, are discouraged. Reply #574. Aug 30 21, 11:39 AM |

Rather than try to paraphrase, I am going to quote directly an answer I gave to a question another player had about Contract #224. The question asked if one could write a Sports quiz for the Contract. "I don't think there would be a way to make a Sports quiz that would meet the requirements of the quiz. The quiz should be focused on non-sports aspects of famous athletes. I was going to write accomplishments at first but some or all of the questions could be about negative aspects of those athletes. If you want to keep the questions related, they might be athletes who were also known for politics, or acting, or divorces. In theory, you could different questions focused areas: one about politics, one about acting, etc." To surmise, the contract doesn't explicitly forbid a Sports quiz, but I genuinely can't imagine a Sports quiz that would meet the other requirements. Regarding two letter words in CWs and FT: This addresses Bernie's post at #574 Two letter words are permissible on FT but we expect their use to be minimal. We cut new authors a bit of slack when they first start writing CWs and allow a few but as authors get more experienced we encourage them to use them less. When they are used, both letters must be crossed. Reply #579. Sep 01 21, 1:31 AM |

One more comment on Contract 224. I received another query about a quiz which was about athletes who shared another characteristic. I said that a quiz where questions were similar to "Which the following athletes also have/don't have this unrelated characteristic?" would be acceptable. Reply #580. Sep 01 21, 7:47 AM |
