A cruciverbalist sent me this message: (( Out of interest I wonder if you have compiled such crosswords to determine the feasibility of such a challenge. Whilst I think the "left handed puzzle" should cause few problems, I'm not convinced that the "right-handed puzzle" is practicable. )) No, I haven't compiled the right-handed puzzle, but I will do so. The basis of this challenge was discovering unsymmetrical puzzles using these requirements in Fun Trivia's archives. The only extras I added were requiring the use of identical symmetric grids with no two-letter words and IATA codes. Anyone undertaking this contract would be well-advised to complete the right-handed puzzle first. Said cruciverbalist also sent me all the possible three- to seven- letter words utilising the right-side letters from an online tool. I am happy to accept that there are two seven-letter words, although the anagram utility I favour found more words in every other word-size category. Reply #597. Sep 15 21, 9:37 AM |

I need to take exception with my statement about there only being two seven-letter words. That was based on the mistaken notion that each letter might only appear once in a given word, resulting in JUMPILY and PHONILY. However, letters can appear multiple times. Thinking about that resulted in these seven-letter words which would be acceptable: holmium, hominin, homonym, hyponym, jillion, jimminy, jollily, jumpily, killjoy, kinkily, kookily, kopiyky, kopiyok, limpkin, lollopy, loonily, loopily, lumpily, lupulin, milkily, million, minikin, minimum, moonily, mullion, munnion, muonium, nippily, nonoily, opinion, phonily, pillion, plumply, polynyi, pulpily, pumpkin There might be more. Using my favorite anagramming tool with four of each letter resulted in 512 words (although 29 had just two letters). There was one 11-letter word and six nine-letter ones. The other thought is that there are also some multi-word phrases possible: KILO-OHM is one that springs to mind. Some of those two-letter words could also be part of a phrase. I'll keep working on a solution. The puzzle that inspired this challenge was: https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=2448 Reply #598. Sep 15 21, 12:14 PM |
