Remnants
Wylson Lefkowitz-Blake. Yago desperately wanted to be leader but knew most people would be more comfortable with an adult. So he basically shoved Wylson into the role. He felt he would be a good number two for the Remnants, and eventually take over the role as leader.
Violet. She prefers to be called Miss Blake. A "Jane" is a girl who has chosen to live her life artistically, rejecting the high-tech world she lives in. She is said to be obsessed with Jane Austen, even going as far as talking like the characters in her works. Violet slowly sheds this stereotype as the novel progresses, showing toughness and bravery, unlike her mother Wylson.
Twenty. Okay, here we go: Jobs, Mo’Steel, Violet, 2Face, Edward, TR, Burroway, Wylson, Yago, Anamull, Billy, Olga, Roger Dodger, Tate, Kubrick, his father Alberto DiSalvo, Shy Hwang, D-Caf, Tamara, and The Baby. Of the original eighty, these are the only ones left. Big Bill, Errol, and Connie Huerta were original Wakers but passed away afterward.
Mo’Steel. "Caught a ride back inside with one of those Blue Meanies." This is the first name given to them. Mo says it once, and everyone calls them that the rest of the series. He was also the very first one to see them, because he was caught in the tornado that dragged him down into space, where they awaited. The Blue Meanies, who sneak in the ship after tearing through it, are huge and powerful. Jobs counts "thirty or forty" of them making it on board before the ship repairs itself.
Edward. Unconsciously, he had been changing the color of his skin, blending in to any background he was in. This is the first of many different "powers" some of the Remnants gain throughout the series. This book also features the first time Edward speaks in the series.
Kubrick and his father Albert DiSalvo. Yes, it’s true: these two are not mentioned in the entire book. They wake up in the second novel and aren’t referenced again. However, they eventually return later in the series. Kubrick is even given a cover of himself on a book later on.
Purple. When Tamara fights the aliens, she is able to kill a few. She even manages to steal weapons from them. No one acknowledges the fact that the blood is purple; it is only mentioned in passing: "Tamara … came up the stairs, spear shouldered, unconcerned by the purple blood oozing down its length." It is after this that she says one of the most eerie lines of the series: "Everything dies, human."
Yago. Yago mentions this to himself when realizing how powerful Tamara was, and how she was able to protect them all. He is always concerned with politics and with gaining power, but he has to admit that Tamara was the boss, and not Wylson, who "play-acted" at being in charge. She called meetings with only the adults and Yago attending.
Four Sacred Streams. The Blue Meanie follows the group and saves them often. The group is able to communicate with him by making contact with Billy. It is through Billy that they successfully speak, and Four Sacred Streams names himself. Before, it would take minutes for the Meanie to understand the humans. Because of Billy, they are able to learn more about the ways of the ship they are on.
Eeyore. Before using the pony, Jobs and Mo’ Steel were forced to carry Billy around. Billy is still unable to move and talk in this book. The pony Eeyore drags a wagon very slowly around, carrying Billy. It couldn’t move any more than three miles per hour. It is set in a Pieter Brueghel painting.
The Blue Meanie. 2Face and Edward were too busy struggling to survive to save the others. Tamara did save many people, but not Mo’Steels’ group. Four Sacred Streams saved Mo, Jobs, Olga, Billy, and Violet by sacrificing himself. It was his duty to destroy the node that had been created. He set his suit to detonate, destroying the node in which they were trapped. Violet was drowning - and smothering - in a black tar pit. Mo’Steel was about to be cooked alive. Jobs was stuck on a long blade, getting cut with every move he made. Olga had been stabbed in the side, and Billy had been abandoned. Four Sacred Streams told Mo "Sing to my people of my death."
While running away from the demons, Jobs wonders how far his group has walked. How many steps had they taken? | Remnants Book 3: “Them.”

Four-hundred-nineteen. Mo’Steel answered Jobs with four-hundred-nineteen steps taken. He has an amazing ability with numbers. It turns out that Mo’ Steel is not only a thrill-seeking athlete, he is a number savant. He is not traditionally book-smart, but he does have a way with numbers. He also automatically knows the square root of any number.
Wylson and her group encounter a mysterious door, and Wylson worries about what it contains. What lies beyond the door? | Remnants Book 3: “Them.”

Two creatures from a painting. The two demons shook the remnants to their core. One was a creature that looked like a clothed frog with a woman’s face holding an iron pan over a fire. The other, which did nothing but stare, was an antlered deer standing on its hind legs. These demons are from Boschs’ "Last Judgment."
Beulah. After Mo’Steel tied bits of Remnant clothing together, he fixed one end to his wrist and another to a Rider boomerang. He was able to use this tool to attach himself to a passing Blimp and hitch a ride, after some trying. As usual, Mo’Steel was exhilarated by the ride he received.
Mo’ Steel. Just like he coined the term "Blue Meanie," Mo’Steel named the Blimp "Beulah". The entire Remnant group rode this Blimp until it became extremely exhausted and they were forced to hide in its gassy insides. This was when Billy finally woke up and was able to control the Blimp for the others.
Shy Hwang. The group found coffee beans and beef on the ship they took over. Hwang claimed to be able to cook and attempted to make stew with the meat they found. He didn’t know how to do anything to help the others maintain the boat, but he admitted reading C.S Forester and Patrick O’Brien.
Cartridges, any tools they could find, and cannonballs. The cartridges were filled with gunpowder and looked like rolled-up sleeping tents. Jobs instructed Olga to keep the powder dry. Anamull was the one to find the cannonballs. With every piece painstakingly put together, Jobs was able to use the ship’s cannon to fire at the Squids. He aimed at these Squids instead of the Blue Meanies, hoping to gain some allies.
They shot their cannons at a statue. The statue was taller and looked more ancient that any other in the water. It apparently meant much to the Blue Meanies. The Remnants made the mistake of hitting it not once, but twice. Evidently, the Meanies had been defending the statue from the opposing Squids. The aliens stopped shooting at the Squids and took aim at the Remnants. This led to the death of Shy Hwang, who was decimated by the flechettes.
Shy Hwang and Wylson. Shy Hwang was killed immediately by the Blue Meanies. 2Face, his daughter, couldn’t help but scream uncontrollably. Shy was depressed the entire time he was awake because he had already lost his wife. Wylson Lefwokitz-Blake was swept overboard by the immense thunderstorm that brought huge waves. She drowned in the water and was sucked in through the bottom of the ocean floor, along with Mo’ Steel and Billy.
Riders. The chapter described the Riders observing the Remnants walking/swimming through the eel-infested waters. Riders have fighting partners and each has their own hoverboard. The boards are loyal and will always remain with them until they die. The Riders also routinely die and gain wisdom by each death. The pain gets worse with each death until they became Sanctified Ancestors. The chapter was observed through a Rider named Chirismontak Hadad-Chirismon, Warrior of the Vanascom Clan, Acolyte of the Unseen Star God.
Tamara and the baby. Unhuman was the term the Riders use for Tamara and her baby. They were also called the human-not-human. The Riders call them this because they have defeated almost every single Rider that have challenged them to a fight. Interestingly enough, they also realized that Tamara was drawing all of her power from the baby.
He was too brave. From the moment Billy woke up, he struggled to realize he was conscious and awake. It didn’t help that he was usually near Mo’ Steel, who was brave and adventurous, almost to a ruthless extent. Billy thought "Mo’ Steel can’t be a real. A real person would be afraid…" Billy also admitted, still thinking he’s dreaming, that he himself would be afraid. He wanted to ask Mo a question but thought "What’s the point in talking to a figment of your imagination?"
Alberto DiSalvo. Billy, Mo’Steel, and Kubrick first thought the man was dead, but Alberto was able to walk after sitting in the alien chair. It turned out he had inadvertently found a way to interact with the ship’s computer. But his fragile mind could not handle it. He walked around speaking gibberish: "Where is everyone?...I like Birthday cake…I could serve the tea and biscotti, why wasn’t I invited? Drifting!" He stumbled around and fell on his knees often. Kubrick and the others helped him move about for throughout the rest of the novel.
A giant Mo’ Steel. Jobs and the others, after being attacked by a suddenly appearing fleet of British ships, loaded their cannons and fired. They managed to do some damage but took on too much of their own. From below, Billy was able to make Mo’Steel a giant. Mo kicked and threw the opposing ships for his friends. Being the thrill-seeker he was, Mo’Steel loved every minute of it.
Kubrick and Mo’Steel. The hotheaded Kubrick shoved Mo’ Steel when he was asked to lead the others. Mo recovered his balance and the two fought. Soon Kubrick realized he felt no pain as he was getting punched. He quit and Mo suggested Kubrick was superhuman, "impervious to pain." Mo was envious, and Kubrick was merely depressed he couldn’t feel the pain.
Billy’s thoughts. Billy Weir decided to sit in the chair that would allow him to interact with the ship. Immediately the Remnants were moved from the freezing water to a foreign world. It was a mixture of his war-torn home country and his life in America that included his school and a McDonald’s.
Supersize fries, a large Coke, milk, apple pie, side salad. Yes, 2Face wound up in a McDonald’s, where an acne-infested employee asked "You want fries with that?" She ordered and then met Yago, Jobs, Edward, and Violet. The restaurant was filled with a mixture of high-school students and injured soldiers. Fans of K.A. Applegate might find this scene familiar. In "The Andalite Chronicles," the writer placed a character in a McDonald’s. She ordered fries and Coke and was also served by a pimply employee!
An entirely female army. The muscle-bound women carried ornate weapons and were very hostile. They immediately attacked the soldiers in the restaurant. They were also seen chasing the other Remnants. It was believed that they were characters from a comic book Billy read when he was young.
Edward Hopper’s "Nighthawks". The gang spent all of book three, "Them," in Bosch’s "Last Judgment". The famous diner scene, "Nighthawks", was shown. The Remnants had hidden in Billy’s house and escaped. But they only escaped into a vast black area, where nobody could see or feel anything. The diner showed up and comforted the Remnants with its familiar look and warm lighting.
Kubrick. Lance and Alvin were not characters in the story. Kubrick and his father woke up late, much later than the others. The two fell asleep again and woke up in an odd alien laboratory. Kubrick woke lying on an invisible table surrounded by machines. The dusty machines ripped all of his skin, hair, and nails completely off of his body. He felt no pain at all.
Shaving cream. The Remnants have a limited amount of time to find a weapon to use against the dozens of Riders chasing them. Mo’Steel found a BB gun and 2Face armed herself with a baseball bat. Jobs found shaving cream and was silently mocked by 2Face. The BB pellets hardly had an effect on the Riders and 2Face didn’t use the bat much. Jobs was commended for spraying the shaving cream in a Rider’s eyes. It caused the alien to scream.
